The Goblin King swung his enormous mace over his head and smashed it down on James. He raised his shield to block it, but even that couldn’t fully dull the blow.

The shield buckled and James was forced to stagger back. As he did so, Gungnir pulled out one of her pistols and fired, the bullet slicing through James’ hair and embedding itself in the Goblin King’s flabby belly.

“Watch where you’re shooting!” James said to Gungnir.
“Sorry, I’m just really not a good shot.”
“Then stop playing Gunslinger!”
The group stumbled back as the Goblin King brought his club down again, the bridge shaking from the strike. Amelia and Gungnir leapt up onto the remaining platforms to get a clearer shot of the Goblin King, both of them on opposite sides, while Lambda extended a hand towards one of the dead goblins that the Goblin King had just walked past, a skeleton rising up in its place.

“That skeleton looks absolutely nothing like the goblins,” James said. He slashed his sword at the Goblin King, but was blocked by the massive club.
“He can’t block us if we attack on every side!” Lambda said, “Everyone, go!”
Lambda fired her shotgun, Amelia stabbed at the King and both of the skeletons attacked as the entire group bombarded the goblin king.

The king swung his club in an arc, smashing one of the chains on both platforms. Amelia smashed her sword into the wood as it tilted downwards, hanging off the hilt. Gungnir slid down, trying to find a purchase, but slid off. The skeleton behind the Goblin King caught her hand and pulled her up, only to be whacked away by a flick of his hand.

As the bones clattered away, the Goblin King smashed his mace down on the wooden platform Amelia was on. It splintered into wood and Amelia lost her purchase, falling down. James leapt off the platform, grabbing Amelia and sending them flying into the cavern wall. Amelia stabbed her sword into the rock slightly, letting them slide down safely. They landed in a wide cave, filled with nothing but broken wood and the bodies of the goblins they felled earlier.
“Thanks for nearly crushing me?” Amelia said.
“Better than them,” James said, nodding at the goblins. As he looked around, he started to realise that he had seen this place before.
Amelia looked up. She could see dust falling as Gungnir and Lambda were desperately duelling the King. They heard a gunshot as a bullet found its way into the King’s flesh. The king’s mace slammed down into the bridge, which cracked and gave way. Lambda and Gungnir tried to stay on rocks to break their fall, but they still hit the ground hard.

Amelia and James crouched behind his shield to protect themselves from the falling rocks and the blinding clouds of dust. Through the haze they could hear the Goblin King roar and see the shadow of him smashing his club into the ground. They couldn’t see Lambda crawling away from the metal slab smashing into the ground next to him. He turned around and swung his scythe, but only slashed at the air.
“Well, if I can’t see you, I will have to use an ability that doesn’t rely on sight!” He shouted. He held out his hand and red energy was pulled out of the Goblin King’s hand, flowing back into him.

“Oh, wow, this healing really isn’t worth it,” Lambda muttered. The Goblin King smashed his mace on the ground, narrowly missing Lambda, with enough force to clear a large portion of the dust. Now the rest of the party were finally able to see him, Amelia rushed forward, running past the King and slashing at his legs. Gungnir aimed her shotgun and fired in tandem. The king swung his mace behind him to hit the gunslinger, but James ran in and parried the blow.

Gungnir aimed her pistol and fired, but the king swung his mace and blocked the bullet. He leapt towards her and smashed the mace into her, crushing her easily.

The group stood dumbfound at one of their DPSes being crushed into a paste almost immediately.
“Please tell me you brought revives,” Lambda said.
“I thought you brought them,” Amelia replied.
“This is why we gave Grey all the items!” James muttered. The Goblin King swung his mace, forcing all of the party to duck under it. Lambda raised his hand and a skeleton popped out of the ground behind the King, slashing at him.
The King turned around to smash the mace down on the skeleton, giving Amelia a chance to slice at the back of his neck.

Four skeletons rose out of the ground next to the bloody pulp that was Gungnir. The king rushed towards them and swung his mace, but they quickly spread out.
“How many can you summon?” James asked.
“As many as necessary.” Lambda smirked.
“Because they’re made of sandpaper,” Amelia muttered. She ran towards the King while he wasn’t looking, but he turned around and grabbed her face, lifting her into the air.
“Why don’t you DIE?!” He screamed, smashing her into the floor. He lifted her up, preparing to smash her into the floor again, but Lambda chucked his scythe through the air, sending it spinning like a saw before embedding itself into the King’s wrist, forcing him to let go of Amelia. She staggered to her feet, using her sword to prop herself up. She screamed as she unleashed a barrage of strikes on the King.

However, before the last hit could land, the King blocked the blow with his mace. He tried to crush Amelia, but one of the skeletons tackled her out of the way and took the blow.

He turned to crush Amelia, but the King felt several strikes to his knees as James and the skeletons struck in unison, causing the troll to stagger and lose his balance, making the attack completely miss.
“Aim to knock it down,” James told the skeletons. “Go for the legs.”
They nodded, encircling the troll. He swung his claws at them as if he was trying to swat flies, but James and the undead constructs dodged in between them, attacking the monster’s legs with a rapid flurry of blows. The creature’s knees began to buckle, and James slammed the ground to make sure it fell.

“We’ve knocked it down,” Lambda shouted as he joined the rest of the party once the king was down. “We shall kill him before he stands again.”
He pulled the scythe out of the monster’s wrist and sliced at its shoulder. James and the skeletons followed up with additional strikes to the back.
“I will not die on my knees like a commoner!” The king screamed.
“Then you shouldn’t have pissed us off,” Amelia responded.
He raised his mace to take a swing, but Amelia cut his hand clean off. The mace hit the ground with a thump.

James held his hand in front of her, and she put her sword down, exasperated.
“Goblin King,” James said, “I was wondering...has a group of people with cloaks ever walked through here? They slaughtered a group of goblins down here.”
“You think I would ever tell pathetic fools like you anything?” He snarled. “I am king here! You cannot destroy the goblins! You cannot destroy me!”
“Just give me my XP,” Amelia said bluntly.

Amelia landed on the ground and the King’s body fell to either side of her.
“Finally, a new skill!” Amelia shouted as she put her sword on her back. “Can’t wait to play with this thing!”
“I’m more concerned about how we will get out…” Lambda said as he walked towards Gungnir’s body. James just stood motionless in front of the King’s body. If what he said was true, what was it he saw, then? Were they really just bad dreams that were plaguing him in this game for some reason?
“I think I see a ladder,” Lambda said as he examined the wall. “Let’s head back to Vagrant Company and heal Gungnir up.”
“Stop looking so glum,” Amelia told James. “Nobody’s gonna miss this guy. Besides, remember that now we can brag about our new abilities to Grey and Patrick, right?”
“Sure,” James smiled. He checked the ceiling to make sure there wasn’t a familiar face hanging there, but luckily it was clear. The group began to ascend the ladder, leaving the darkness of the Goblin Caves for good this time.
