Chapter 30: Peaceful Sky, Violent Storm

  Conjure Fog has leveled up!

Conjure Fog is now level 10!

  Conjure Fog has upgraded!

Conjure Fog: Use your mana to conjure fog. The more mana spent the denser the fog will be. The fog now does slow, ongoing damage to any enemies stuck within it.

  You have leveled up!

  You have reached level 10!

  Class Evolution Available

Kumo yelled as soon as she got the notification. She had been waiting on it for days now, and it finally came. Then she read the notification and was even happier. The upgraded ability of Conjure Fog was already awesome and would greatly improve her damage output, and she also had a class evolution. She asked Synexus to keep watch for another five minutes so she could sit down and focus.

  Three Class Options Available:

Cloudmancer (uncommon): This is the direct upgrade to the cloudmancer class. You are one with clouds and continuing the path will further strengthen that connection. This will offer you more general skills for using the clouds to your advantage. 50 generic stat points will be available per level with this class.

Sky Warrior (rare): Take to the sky with more melee options. Stand amongst the clouds and use superior strength, and agility to be the bird of prey striking from above. The sky is your domain, now protect it. This class will give 15 strength stat points, 15 agility stat points, and twenty-five genetic stat points per level.

Cloud Tempest (rare): The freedom of a cloud with the striking power of a storm. You excel at using spells to enhance your combat. Intelligence and perception will allow you to master the skills of the clouds and be as dangerous as a storm. This class will give 15 intelligence stat points, 15 perception stat points, and twenty-five generic stat points per level.

These were all interesting choices, and she could see that they all covered certain aspects of her class. The first provided a direct path forward but would offer more generic skills which didn’t promise a honed skillset. The stat points were five lower, however, she would have more freedom with them. The Sky Warrior class was intriguing to her because it sounded like she would get a lot of movement type skills, and with the line about standing amongst the clouds, she would probably get a flight ability. The downside of this one was the melee aspect. She wasn’t a melee fighter. She enjoyed using the skills more to deal the damage needed. This led her to the last option.

The Cloud Tempest class sounded most like her. She had always felt close to the clouds, but her favorite times were when the clouds turned grey and showed their power. This class would play into the side of the aspects of her class that she already enjoyed, which were the skills, and this class sounded like it would result in more combat focused skills. The only downside of this class was the perception stat points. She hadn’t been focusing on perception, but it did make sense. This class would make her even more of a distance fighter. You need perception if you’re slinging spells from fifty feet away.

It was an important and difficult decision. This would affect her future. She would have this class until it evolved again, which she wasn’t sure when that would be. All the options were decent options, but the last two would cause her to change her current combat methods. She considered all of them by picturing herself in the roles that the descriptions provided. The direct path of the Cloudmancer would be the easiest, however, when she pictured herself as a Cloud Tempest it was like it was meant for her. After a few minutes of thought she selected Cloud Tempest as her class evolution.

You are now a Cloud Tempest!

  25 stat points available

  Two New Skills Unlocked

Stormcloud: Using a large amount of mana, summon a storm cloud overhead that will periodically shoot a devastating lightning bolt at an enemy. The cloud also produces heavy rain. This will not affect your allies but will slow your enemies slightly. The size of the cloud and attack frequency will increase with the level.

Force of a Tempest: This passive skill enforces all your wind-based skills with the force of a tempest greatly enhancing their speed and destructive power.

  Achievement Unlocked!

Evolved: All resources have risen by 100.

Kumo was not expecting two new skills just for evolving her class. The first one was a new combat skill which made her happy. Not only did it deal damage with bolts of lightning but slowed enemies down with its rain. It would go great with her new upgraded Conjure Fog skill. The second was passive and it was an amazing boon to her existing skills. All her skills were wind-based. Then to top it off she had gotten an achievement. It wasn’t super helpful, but she wouldn’t turn down an extra 100 mana, stamina, or health.

She stood up and told Synexus about her options and her new skills. He asked her for a demonstration which she was excited to oblige. First, she would use her existing skills that had gotten the boon of her new passive. She conjured a breeze but didn’t use any mana for it. She simply called the wind into a gentle breeze. It now was much stronger than before. It nearly blew her and Synexus overboard. She wasn’t going to test it with mana until they were in a fight or on land. Next was her cloud blade which shot out like a cannon. It made a sonic boom as it exploded out and hit the water. She was kicked back by the force of the blade. It would definitely take some getting used to. Thunder Surge would have to wait because she was afraid it would wake everyone up.

The second thing to try out was her new active skill. She summoned a storm cloud up high above them. It seemed to follow them as the boat kept going like her Cloud Cover skill. The rain was heavy, but Synexus said he couldn’t even feel the chill, or the rain drops hitting his skin. The waves around them started getting rough with the wind produced by the isolated storm. Then the lightning strikes started coming down. It was one every minute or so, and they were striking random monsters that they had not seen in the water. The skill dissipated after about ten minutes, and it had taken about two hundred mana in total.

It was a skill she would have to time right. Ten minutes was a long time in a fight but if she had to use it again, it would be a mana sink. Overall, she was happy with both skills, and with her class evolution. Now she had new skills to focus on catching up with her others and she was sure the chance to level them up would arise. Vorin already asked her to provide a breeze every now and then into the sails. This lets them avoid turning the sails as much.

With all her skills tested, and Synexus giving her an amazed look, he went down below deck to rest while she started her shift. While it was still quiet, she took the chance to look at her status screen for the first time since they were at the gates of Gale.

She was proud. It had only been two months since she had become class chosen and now, she was class evolved. She had started mastering her skills and now she had even more to master. This was still the beginning for her, but that made it even more exciting. What would her class evolve into next? What new skills would she get going forward? How powerful would she truly get?

  ***

Synexus went down to his room, but he was too excited for Kumo to sleep. Her new skills were incredible, and he was even more excited to get there himself. He lay there thinking about it until he heard a voice in the corner of his room.

  “Did Kumo evolve her class?”

He recognized it as Gene’s voice. “She did. It came with some incredible skills and now I can’t wait to get this last level.”

“Yes, class evolutions are normally quite the step up. The System tends to evaluate a person perfectly before offering the class options that it believes would fit them.”

“Well, I’m excited to see what it has to offer me. The Branch Elder told me that no one could help me make the decisions involving my class, but when the time comes, I’d like your advice.”

“Keep in mind Synexus that every class is different. Even what levels you get skills or what evolution grants. Sometimes the System only gives you one option to choose from. As for my advice, I cannot give it on matters involving this. It must be your choice but know that I trust your judgement.”

“Thank you, Gene. You said you’ve met a Progress Druid before, right?”

“I did a long time ago.” He let out a long sigh before speaking once more. “That’s why I urge you to be careful. Your class comes with a significant burden. That really is all I can and will say until you understand.”

With that warning from his friend, Synexus closed his eyes to go to sleep. With enough rest, tomorrow would be the day he could start using skills again. That meant working on Body Transmutation as much as possible to get that final level and catch up to Kumo. What would his class become?
