Huo Chen sat cross-legged on his meditation mat with one mid-grade spirit stone resting in his palm. The ochre glow painted his small room in warm light. Outside, the compound had settled into its usual evening rhythm.
He closed his eyes and began circulating his Qi, following the Earth Root Breathing Method's pathways. The energy within his dantian responded immediately, eager and ready. He pressed his awareness against the spirit stone and drew.
The response was immediate and violent.
Spiritual energy crashed into his meridians like a flood breaking through a dam. His entire body tensed as the power surged through channels that had never experienced anything this concentrated, this pure. Every bone in his body lit up with sensation.
His clone stirred within his dantian without being called, moving on pure instinct. It intercepted the worst of the surge and began filtering the energy, stripping away the chaotic elements and leaving only the refined essence. What had been a destructive torrent became a powerful but controlled river.
Huo Chen guided the flow through his primary meridians, forcing it into the circulation pattern. Once around. Twice. Three times. Each cycle built on the last, the energy compressing tighter and tighter within his core. Heat spread through his bones, starting deep in the marrow and radiating outward.
The pressure kept building. His breathing came harder, sweat breaking out across his forehead and running down his face. The barrier to the fifth layer sat there in his awareness like a wall of solid stone, and the compressed energy hammered against it relentlessly.
"Before the clone, I'd still be stuck at fourth layer for another two years. At least."
He pulled more energy from the stone, feeding the circulation. The pressure in his dantian reached the point where it felt like something had to give—either the barrier would break or his core would shatter trying.
The hammering continued. Each circulation slammed against that wall with the force of the accumulated energy. His jaw clenched, his hands gripping his knees hard enough that his knuckles turned white.
Then something shifted.
The barrier didn't crack or shatter. It simply dissolved, like it had never been there at all. The compressed energy in his dantian underwent an immediate transformation, condensing from vapor into liquid in a single instant. The density multiplied, and golden light began pouring out of his core and into his skeleton.
The sensation was incredible. Warm liquid light flooded through his bones, seeping into the marrow and reinforcing the structure from the inside out. His spine, his ribs, his arms and legs—every bone in his body began transforming, becoming denser and harder.
A laugh burst out of him before he could stop it. Quiet at first, then louder as the reality hit him. He'd actually done it. Fifth layer. The Bone-Nourishing stage that has always been a major obstacle for him.

"Fifth layer," he said aloud to his empty room, still laughing. "I'm actually at the fifth layer."
The transformation continued through the rest of the night. The golden light worked its way through his entire skeletal system, reinforcing and strengthening. His meridians expanded to handle the increased Qi flow, their walls thickening and becoming more resilient.
By the time dawn light started creeping through his window, the process was complete.
Huo Chen opened his eyes and looked down at the spirit stone in his hand. Its glow had dimmed to maybe two percent of its original brightness. His body had taken what it could handle and no more.
He set the stone aside carefully and stood up, testing his new body. The first thing he noticed was the weight—not heavy, but solid and grounded. Like his connection to the earth beneath his feet had fundamentally changed.
He took a few steps around his small room. Each movement felt different, more stable and precise. He threw a casual punch at the air and his fist moved faster than he expected, cutting through the space with a sharp sound that made him grin.
But underneath the power, he could feel the instability. His foundation was fresh, still settling into its new state. Trying to do anything strenuous now would be asking for trouble. He needed time to consolidate, to let his body fully adapt to the changes.
Three days later, Huo Chen stepped out of his chamber into bright morning sunlight. His foundation felt solid now, properly settled. The fifth layer had integrated completely, and he was ready to make it official.
The Records Hall was a smaller building next to the Contribution Hall where disciples reported major status changes. Inside, an elderly clerk sat behind a worn desk covered in ledgers and ink stones.
The clerk looked up as Huo Chen entered. "What do you need?"
"Reporting a breakthrough. Fifth layer of Qi Refining."
The clerk's brush paused mid-stroke. He set it down and stood, walking around the desk to stand in front of Huo Chen. "Fifth layer? Let me check."
His spiritual sense washed over Huo Chen—a brief but thorough probe that verified the density of his Qi and the state of his meridians. The clerk's eyebrows rose slightly.
"Confirmed. Fifth layer, Bone-Nourishing stage." He returned to his desk and began writing in the main ledger. "Your monthly allocation increases to three low-grade spirit stones and one Qi Gathering Pill. Present this token at the Contribution Hall."
He passed a small jade token across the desk. Huo Chen took it with a respectful nod.
"Thank you, Elder."
The clerk was already back to his paperwork, waving a dismissive hand.
Huo Chen left the Records Hall and headed straight to the Contribution Hall. The attending disciple there took his token, verified it against the records, and handed over a small pouch.
"Three spirit stones and one pill. Congratulations on your advancement."
"Thanks."
Huo Chen left the hall and made his way back through the compound toward his courtyard. Other disciples were out and about, heading to various duties. A few glanced at him with curiosity—word of his breakthrough had probably spread already—but most ignored him.
Back in his chamber, he set the pouch of official resources on his table and looked at the floorboard hiding his stolen mid-grade stones. Two different paths, two different sources of power. As long as he kept them separate and used them carefully, everything would be fine.
He changed into his work robes and began gathering his equipment. The excavation team would still be working at the mine, and Elder Wei would be expecting him back now that his consolidation period was over.
He stepped out into the sunlight and headed toward the eastern gate, his equipment secure on his back. The path was familiar, well-worn from countless trips back and forth.
Fifth layer. The foundation was set. Now he just had to build on it without drawing too much attention, without making people ask questions he couldn't answer.
One step at a time.
