Chapter 12 - The Door in the Ruins

Morning light filtered through the high boughs as Cael, Lyra, and Lumi followed the northern trail out of Meril. The first stretch took them past the hillside sheep pastures, where only a few early shepherds were out, moving quietly as if the valley itself wanted to preserve the calm. Beyond the fence line, the forest rose in layered green walls, damp with dew and breathing out cool mist.

Cael felt the shift before anything changed visually.

A subtle tightening in the air.

A faint vibration beneath his skin, like invisible strings being pulled too tight.

A translucent message formed in front of him.

  [Dissonance Density Rising — Minor]

He slowed. “It’s starting earlier than before.”

Lyra adjusted the sling at her belt. “We shouldn’t be this close to the influence yet. If it’s reaching out this far, whatever is inside the ruins is getting more active.”

Lumi’s ears flattened as she sniffed the air.

A second notification snapped into view.

  [Environmental Instability: 3% → 7%]

Cael let out a low breath. “These spikes are getting sharper.”

As they continued, the forest’s changes became impossible to ignore. Ferns rustled without wind. Stones shimmered with faint inner light that faded as quickly as it appeared. Birch trunks bore shallow grooves that pulsed in a slow rhythm, almost like breathing.

Lyra ran her fingers along one of the marks. “It isn’t just spreading. It’s twisting things as it goes.” She stepped back and looked toward the higher ridges. “If this keeps up, the pastures could be next.”

“We won’t let it reach them,” Cael said. “Once we get inside, we’ll finally see what’s causing this.”

Clusters of cracked masonry rose from the ground as they climbed a low rise, the stones half-swallowed by moss and centuries of roots. Cael laid his palm on one. A faint thrum answered, like a memory buried beneath the surface.

“This whole area is reacting,” he murmured.

The air drew tight around them.

  Two more messages appeared.

  [Dissonance Density Rising — Moderate]

  [Manifestation Risk Detected]

Cael raised his hand. “Stay alert.”

The forest fell silent. No birds. No wind. Even the distant stream seemed muted.

Then a warped cry shattered the stillness, stretched thin and undercut with a jittering resonance that made Cael’s sigil pulse uneasily.

A distorted shadow swept beneath the canopy. Lumi growled low.

  Lyra pointed. “Left!”

A dark shape banked hard and burst into view.

It resembled a hawk, but everything about it was wrong. Jagged black plates replaced feathers. Wings bent at unnatural angles. Violet light flickered beneath cracked flesh, and its beak split vertically like a broken hinge.

  Cael triggered Inspect.

  [Inspect]

  [Corrupted Shrike — Level 4]

  Status: Dissonance-Infused, Unstable

  Threat: Moderate

Lyra’s expression tightened. “If these are already reaching this trail, something in the Shatterspire must be waking up.”

  The shrike shrieked and dove.

  Lumi barked sharply.

  Cael lowered his stance.

  “Brace.”

The creature plummeted toward them, claws extended and glowing with jagged violet light.

  The fight began.

The corrupted shrike sliced downward through the branches toward Lyra. She twisted aside, its claws grazing her forearm in a flash of pain.

“Lyra!” Cael sprinted toward her as the shrike spiraled upward again.

“I’m alright,” she grit out. “Keep its focus.”

The shrike ascended in a jagged, uneven spiral. Lumi planted herself between Lyra and the creature, hackles raised.

  The bird circled Cael.

He raised his spear. “Come on.”

The shrike dove. Cael stepped into its path and thrust upward. The spear scraped across its chest plates, sparking. The shrike twisted sharply, snapping at his cheek before veering off.

Lyra already had her sling in hand. She set a stone, exhaled, and released.

The shot cracked against the shrike’s wing. The creature faltered and dropped lower, wings beating too hard as it struggled to correct.

  It angled toward Lyra.

  “Look out!” Cael lunged.

He was a heartbeat too slow.

The shrike raked across Lyra’s shoulder as it shot past, its claws missing her neck by inches. The strike tore a long gash across her leather tunic, ripping clean through the outer layer. She staggered with a sharp cry, hot pain rippling down her arm.

  A message flared.

  [Lyra — Health Reduced: 82% → 59%]

  Status: Minor Laceration (Bleeding)

Cael moved in front of her as the shrike struggled to regain height.

  “Behind me.”

Lumi lunged forward with a fierce snarl, forcing the shrike into a sloppy upward jerk. The creature’s path wobbled, exposing its side.

Cael stepped in and drove the spear forward. The blade punched through its torso, and violet cracks spidered outward.

  “Back!” Lyra warned.

Cael pulled away just as the shrike seized midair, fractures spreading across its body until it burst in a resonant pop, releasing a sharp pulse of energy that rustled the trees. Violet ash drifted lightly to the ground.

Another shrike cry echoed in the distance. Closer this time.

Cael lowered his spear. “Everyone alright? We need to move”

Lyra sank to a knee, pressing her hand to her shoulder. “I will be once this stops burning.”

Cael knelt beside her. “Let me wrap it.”

She extended her arm, letting him secure the bandage. When he finished, Lyra placed her hand over it and drew a breath.

Soft green light bloomed beneath her palm.

  [Harmonic Reprise]

  [Bleeding Stopped]

  [Health Restored: 59% → 100%]

She exhaled in relief. “Much better.”

Cael helped her to her feet. “Good. We’re not staying here to meet its friends.”

Lumi nudged Lyra’s hip with a soft whine. Lyra gave her a reassuring scratch. “I’m alright, girl.”

Cael looked toward the ridge. The air was thick again, heavy with invisible tension.

“If shrikes are showing up here, the disturbances inside must be building into something bigger.”

Lyra tightened the strap of her sling. “Then whatever’s causing it is getting close to breaking free. And we’re the only ones who can reach it in time.”

Lumi let out a decisive bark.

They hurried up the trail, only slowing when the rise gave way to the first terrace of the Shatterspire.

The forest parted as they neared the first terrace of the Shatterspire. Broken stone steps rose in tiers, half-swallowed by moss and roots. Cael recognized the path — but the resonance in the air made the ruins feel almost alive, humming at the edge of hearing.

Within the mural chamber, daylight cut through the gaps in the ceiling, illuminating the carvings in sharp relief.

Figures of armored warriors stood etched into the walls: spears raised, cloaks swirling, staves glowing. The Harmonic Knights.

Lyra brushed her fingers over a mural showing a knight drawing a sword mid-stride. “They were so much more… precise than the legends claim.”

Cael studied a carving where two knights moved in mirrored motions, their weapons trailing arcs of resonance.

“If we keep running into things like that shrike,” he said, “we might end up fighting like them whether we want to or not.”

Lyra raised an eyebrow, amused despite the pain. “What, Knights of the Shattered Song? Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.”

Lumi chirped approvingly at the idea anyway.

Cael moved to another mural showing warriors unlocking sigils with radiating lines of light. “Maybe we’ll earn the name one day.”

Lyra snorted. “After we don’t die? Yes. Then maybe.”

They exchanged a small, steady smile.

Another shrike call echoed faintly across the ridge. Both froze.

Lyra swallowed. “We should go. Now.”

Then turned to the inner passage.

The platform before the circular door hummed with a deeper resonance than before. The carved sigils along its surface pulsed faintly, brighter than during their earlier visit.

  A wave of messages flared.

  [Dissonance Density: High]

  [Proximity to Core Disturbance: 98%]

  [Ambient Resonance: Unstable]

Lyra took a slow breath. “It’s reacting to us already.”

Cael’s spear hummed lightly in his grip. Lumi pressed close to Lyra’s leg, uneasy.

Lyra reached into her pack and pulled out her flute.

  “You ready?” she whispered.

  Cael nodded. “Play it.”

Lyra inhaled, lifted the flute, and began the Song of the First Sigil.

Her first notes echoed smoothly off the stone. The air trembled. The carved lines on the door brightened, awakening like nerves being restored.

A deeper harmony, not hers, rose beneath her melody.

  The ruins answered.

Light trickled through the spirals on the door. The vibration deepened.

  A message flashed.

  [Harmonic Source Detected]

Lyra’s song wavered with awe. She steadied, flowing into the next measure.

  The resonance surged.

  [Song of Origin — Recognized]

The stone lit in bright gold-white.

  [Resonance Lock Override — Initiated]

  [Override Accepted]

With a low, melodic rumble, the circular door split along its seams and rotated inward. No grinding stone, only tones slipping into perfect alignment, like a chord resolving.

A descending passage revealed itself, lit by pulsing blue-white lines etched along the floor and walls.

Lyra lowered her flute slowly. “I can’t believe that worked.”

Cael stepped toward the entrance, spear in hand, Lumi creeping forward with cautious curiosity.

“This is where it all starts,” he said quietly. “Whatever’s causing all this, it’s below.”

Lyra swallowed, nodded, and stepped beside him.

Together, they crossed the threshold as the door closed behind them with a soft harmonic sigh.
