Chapter 13 — New Town, New Quest

The morning sun climbed slowly across the sky, washing the world in warm gold as Kaito and Serena continued along the winding road that stretched beyond the forest. The path curved gently upward, leading them toward a grassy hill that rose above the surrounding plains.

Kaito walked slightly ahead, his spear resting across his shoulder. Serena followed beside him, her new staff tapping softly against the dirt path with each step.

When they reached the top of the hill, both of them stopped at the same time.

Before them, spread across the valley like a painting, stood the town of StoneHaven.

High stone walls surrounded the settlement, their gray surface glowing faintly under the sunlight. Tall watchtowers stood at each corner, banners fluttering in the wind. Beyond the walls, rooftops of red and brown tiles stretched across the town, smoke rising from chimneys and drifting lazily into the sky.

Serena placed a hand over her chest, her eyes sparkling.

  “We made it…”

  Kaito nodded slowly.

“Yeah… we finally reached the next town.”

For a moment, neither of them moved. After days of traveling, fighting, and sleeping under the open sky, the sight of civilization felt almost unreal.

Serena turned toward him with a soft smile.

“Let’s go before the sun set and we will definitely doing some quest at the guild tomorrow.”

  Kaito laughed quietly.

“I agree more than you think.”

They began descending the hill, their pace light and energized. The road became wider and busier as they approached the town. Merchants passed by with carts full of goods, travelers walked in groups, and the distant murmur of town life grew louder with each step.

After a few hours of walking, they finally stood before the massive front gate of StoneHaven.

Two armored guards stood watch beside the entrance, spears in hand. One of them raised a hand as Kaito and Serena approached.

  “Adventurers?”

Kaito nodded and reached into his pocket, pulling out his guild card. Serena did the same. The guard examined them briefly before stepping aside.

  “Welcome to StoneHaven.”

Crossing the gate felt like stepping into another world.

  The town was alive.

Voices filled the streets. Vendors shouted about fresh bread and roasted meat. Children ran between the crowds. Horses trotted along the main road while adventurers in armor walked past in groups, laughing and chatting.

Serena spun slowly in place, taking everything in.

  “It’s so lively…”

  Kaito smiled faintly.

“Feels good to be back somewhere safe.”

They followed the main street deeper into town until a familiar sign came into view — a wooden board carved with the symbol of crossed swords.

  The Adventurer Guild.

Inside, the guild hall buzzed with energy. Adventurers filled the tables, some celebrating victories while others studied quest boards. The air smelled of food, leather, and faint traces of metal.

Behind the counter stood a young woman with long brown hair tied neatly behind her back. She wore a simple guild uniform and greeted them with a professional smile.

“Welcome to the StoneHaven Adventurer Guild. How may I assist you?”

  Kaito stepped forward.

“We’re new in town. We’d like to register our arrival.”

  Serena bowed slightly.

“I’m Serena, and this is Kaito.”

“I’m Sofia,” the receptionist replied warmly. “Nice to meet you both.”

They handed over their guild cards, and Sofia examined them carefully.

  “You came from another town?”

  Kaito nodded.

“Yes. We traveled through Mistveil Forest to reach here.”

  Sofia’s eyebrows lifted slightly.

  “That’s quite a journey.”

Serena glanced at Kaito, then back at Sofia.

“We encountered a Lightning Bear on the way.”

  The receptionist froze.

  “A… Lightning Bear?”

  Kaito nodded calmly.

“We managed to defeat it. We were wondering if the guild here buys materials from large monsters.”

Sofia’s expression shifted from surprise to excitement.

“We absolutely do! However… something like that requires approval from the Guild Master.”

  She offered an apologetic smile.

“He’s currently out on business. If you return tomorrow, I can arrange a meeting and prepare everything for handling the materials.”

  Kaito nodded.

“That works for us then we will come back tomorrow in the morning.”

  Serena smiled.

  “Thank you.”

After finishing their business, they stepped back outside into the busy streets.

For the first time since arriving, they allowed themselves to wander without purpose.

They passed rows of vendors selling fruits, spices, and handmade goods. A blacksmith hammered glowing metal inside a shop, sparks flying with each strike. The scent of fresh pastries drifted from a nearby bakery.

Serena slowed near a clothing stall, her eyes scanning the colorful fabrics.

“This town feels bigger than the last one.”

  Kaito nodded.

  “Yeah… and more lively.”

They walked side by side, occasionally stopping to examine items or watch street performers. The tension of travel slowly melted away, replaced by a peaceful comfort neither of them spoke about.

Eventually, Serena glanced at the sky.

“It’s getting late. We should find an inn.”

  Kaito agreed.

  “Lead the way.”

They searched the streets until Serena suddenly pointed toward a building near the end of the road.

A silver crescent moon was painted on a wooden sign hanging above the entrance.

  “The Silver Moon Inn.”

  Kaito smiled.

  “That sounds perfect.”

  They stepped inside.

Warm light filled the room, and the soft smell of cooking welcomed them instantly. Wooden tables lined the dining area, and a staircase led to the upper floor.

Behind the counter stood a young woman who looked to be in her early twenties. She had long chestnut hair and kind, gentle eyes.

“Welcome to the Silver Moon,” she said with a cheerful smile. “How can I help you?”

  Kaito bowed slightly.

  “We’re looking for rooms.”

  Serena nodded.

  “For about a week.”

“I’m Ririna, the owner,” the woman said. “Nice to meet you both.”

They introduced themselves, and soon the conversation turned to pricing and meals.

  Kaito nodded.

  “That sounds reasonable.”

  Ririna smiled brightly.

“Do you choose one room with two beds or …….?”

  Serena froze.

A faint red color spread across her cheeks almost instantly.

Before she could speak, Kaito quickly answered,

“Two rooms with one bed, please.”

  Ririna nodded without hesitation.

“Of course. “then Seven silver coins for a week for two rooms,” Ririna explained. “That includes breakfast and dinner.”

After paying, she handed them their keys and pointed toward the staircase.

“Second floor. End of the hallway.”

They climbed the stairs together in silence.

When Kaito opened the door to his room, he stopped at the entrance.

  A real bed.

A soft mattress. Clean sheets. A window with curtains. A small wooden table.

He stepped inside slowly and closed the door behind him.

Then he dropped onto the bed.

The mattress sank beneath his weight, and a long breath escaped his lips.

“It’s been two weeks… since I slept on a real bed.”

Meanwhile, in the room next door, Serena leaned against the closed door, her face still warm.

She walked toward her own bed and sat down slowly.

Her fingers brushed the blanket as she stared at the floor.

“…One room with two beds wasn’t a bad idea,” she whispered quietly.

  Her face turned red again.

  “Kaito-kun… you idiot.”

Outside, the town of StoneHaven shimmered beneath the rising moon, unaware that new stories had just begun within its walls.
