Chapter 10 – Campfire Promises and the Roar of Thunder
The forest felt different that morning.
Kaito noticed it the moment they resumed their journey. The trees stood taller and closer together, their branches weaving a thick canopy that turned sunlight into scattered emerald rays. Every step across the damp soil released the scent of moss and fallen leaves. Somewhere far above, birds chirped in soft, uncertain melodies, as if warning the forest of the two travelers passing through.
Serena walked slightly ahead, her silver hair tied loosely behind her back. She scanned the surroundings with practice caution, one hand resting near the hilt of her sword.
“This forest feels alive,” she muttered.
Kaito chuckled softly. “Isn’t every forest alive?”
“Not like this one,” she replied. “This one is watching.”
Kaito raised an eyebrow but didn’t argue. After weeks of travel together, he had learned to trust Serena’s instincts.
They continued deeper into the woods until a rustling sound cut through the quiet.
Both froze.
From the thick bushes ahead came low grunts and the snapping of twigs. A foul smell drifted through the air—rotting meat and damp fur.
Serena whispered, “Goblins.”
Three of them burst from the undergrowth moments later. Their green skin was smeared with dirt, their yellow eyes gleaming with hunger. Crude daggers glinted in their hands as they shrieked and charged.
Kaito sighed. “Here we go again.”
The first goblin lunged at him. Kaito sidestepped and use the spear in a clean arc. The creature barely had time to screech before collapsing.
Serena moved like a streak of silver lightning beside him. Her wind cutter flashed twice—precise and elegant. The second goblin fell instantly.
The last one hesitated, trembling. Then it turned to run.
Kaito dashed forward and ended the fight in one swift motion.
Silence returned.
“Let’s not complain,” Kaito said with a grin. “Easy fights are good fights.”
Before they could continue, the ground trembled slightly.
A deep snort echoed from the trees.
Serena’s eyes narrowed. “Not goblins this time.”
A massive wild boar burst from the forest, tusks gleaming like ivory blades. Its eyes were red with rage, and foam dripped from its mouth as it charged.
Kaito stepped forward. “I’ll distract it—”
“No, we do this together.”
The boar thundered toward them, shaking the earth with every step. Kaito darted to the side, slashing its flank. The beast roared and turned toward him, giving Serena the opening she needed.

With a decisive strike, the boar collapsed.
For a moment, they simply stood there, catching their breath and put the boar and the goblin into his item box.
kaito and serena continue to walking. After few hour kaito and serena see a small lake Then Kaito look at serena with smiled. “Dinner.”
Serena laughed softly. “You think with your stomach is too much.”
“And you don’t?”
“…Maybe a little.”
By the time the sun dipped toward the horizon, they found a quiet lake hidden deep within the forest.
The water shimmered gold under the evening light. Gentle ripples reflected the sky like liquid glass.
“This place is perfect,” Serena said softly.
Kaito nodded. “So are we going to camp here tonight? then i will prepare the tent"
They worked together with quiet familiarity. Kaito gathered firewood while Serena prepared the campsite. Soon, a warm fire crackled beside the lake.
Kaito knelt near the water, holding a simple fishing line he had crafted.
Serena watched from the shore. “Do you actually know how to fish?”
“Yes I Do” he admitted.
A moment later, the line jerked violently.
Serena blinked. “You were saying?”
Kaito laughed as he pulled a wriggling fish from the water. “Beginner’s luck.”
They spent the next hour fishing, laughing whenever one slipped away. Eventually, a small pile of fish lay beside the fire.
Afterward, Serena stepped toward the lake. “I’m going to wash up.”
Kaito nodded and looked away respectfully as she walked into the water. The lake reflected the rising moon, and the quiet sound of splashing filled the air.
When she returned, Kaito took his turn, the cool water washing away the day’s fatigue.
Soon, the smell of sizzling meat filled the campsite. Thick slices of boar roasted over the fire while fish grilled beside them.
Serena inhaled deeply. “This smells incredible.”
Kaito flipped a steak. “Adventurer cooking skills. Very important.”
They sat together under the stars, sharing the meal in comfortable silence.
Then Serena spoke.
“Kaito… can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“If you found a place you could live in… somewhere peaceful and safe… would you stop traveling? Or would you keep living as an adventurer in the city with your companions?”
Kaito paused mid-bite.
The fire crackled between them.
He stared into the flames, thinking carefully.
“Well… if that place is good enough for me to settle in… I’ll think about it later. But right now, that’s not going to happen.”
Serena tilted her head. “Why?”
Kaito smiled faintly. “I haven’t fulfilled my dream yet.”
“Your dream…”
“Yeah. I still don’t know how big this world really is. There are places I haven’t seen, people I haven’t met… and adventures waiting everywhere.”
Serena gazed at him quietly.
“You really love traveling.”
“I do. But…” He scratched the back of his head. “Traveling alone would’ve been boring.”
Her cheeks turned slightly pink. “I see.”
Kaito grinned. “So thanks for sticking with me.”
Serena looked away, hiding a small smile. “You’re welcome kaito-kun”
The fire burned low as the night deepened.
Eventually, Kaito lay down in the tent, placing one arm toward.
“Wake me if anything happens,” he murmured sleepily.
Within moments, he was asleep.
Serena remained awake, watching the stars.
An hour passed.
The forest was quiet. Only the gentle sound of the lake and Kaito’s soft breathing filled the night.
Serena hesitated.
Slowly, carefully, she lay beside him and rested her head on his arm.
Her heart pounded.
She stared at his peaceful face, illuminated by fading embers.
Then she whispered so softly the night nearly swallowed her words.
“I’ve fallen in love with you, Kaito-kun.”
Kaito did not wake.
But Serena smiled anyway.
Morning arrived with golden light spilling across the lake.
Kaito stretched lazily. “Morning already?”
Serena handed him grilled fish. “Breakfast.”
They ate quietly, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
Then—
CRACK.
A thunderous sound exploded from the forest.
Birds scattered into the sky.
Kaito and Serena exchanged a glance.
“That didn’t sound normal,” he said.
Serena stood, gripping her sword. “We should move.”
They packed quickly and resumed their journey.
Hours passed as they walked deeper into the forest.
The air grew heavy.
The silence returned.
Then the ground trembled.
A shadow moved between the trees.
And suddenly—
It stepped into the clearing.
A massive bear, twice the size of any normal beast, stood before them. Its fur crackled with faint blue sparks. Lightning danced across its claws, illuminating its glowing eyes.
It growled—a deep, thunderous sound filled with hunger and fury.
Serena “A Lightning Bear…”
Kaito tightened his grip on his sword.
The beast roared.
And the forest trembled.
To be continued…
