Chapter 6

Finding food out in the wilderness was not something she thought she needed to do. Usually, when she played the game normally, her player character didn’t have to worry about things like hunger and thirst. This wasn’t a survival game like Minecraft or Don’t Starve. Man, how she wished she had a burger and some fries right about now. Or a pizza. Or even just a bag of chips.

At first, she tried scavenging the goblins’ corpses to see if they carried any food. Indeed, she did find some jerky made of some mystery meat as well as several other types of loot—crudely made weapons, makeshift leather armor, and only a handful of gold coins.

In a situation like this, she knew that she probably shouldn’t be too picky when it comes to food. However, after thinking it over, she reconsidered in eating the jerky, thinking that whatever meat-like food these goblins carried were of unknown origin, meaning there’s a slight possibility that it might be human meat.

Do goblins of this world even eat humans? She was not entirely sure. Throughout her many playthroughs, she’d only ever try to kill and loot them, not study their culture and customs. Regardless, she’s not going to risk eating any of their food and accidentally become a cannibal. She’s hungry but not that hungry.

In an attempt to look for alternative sources of food, she tried scavenging for some carmine berries that grew from bushes around here. If she recalled correctly, these berries were used as an alchemical ingredient for status-cleansing potions, so they should be safe to consume, at least in theory.

She popped one in her mouth and chewed on it for a bit. After waiting for a few minutes to see if it had any adverse effect on her, she ate another one. So far, she hadn’t suffered from any poisoning effect from eating them, though they do taste incredibly sour and bitter and were generally not very filling food. She may be able to just barely survive starvation by eating these, but she won’t exactly be happy about it.

Let’s hope that once she arrives at a settlement, she’d be able to find a tavern or something and eat some really good food.

After walking for a couple more hours, Miri finally came across something that resembled a settlement in the far distance. Just like how she remembered from the game, Hemera was a small city-like settlement with a large cylindrical tower made of grey stone right at its center, one that had glowing runes inscribed on its surface and had a large, bright, orange gem right at its top.

The tower acted as more or less like a beacon, welcoming any and all would-be travelers to come towards it as a site of respite and resupply. In addition, if Miri remembered correctly, the bright gem at the top also acted as both a kind of magical power generator and city-wide defense mechanism, able to erect a magical barrier to protect the whole city from any potential threats that might favor in attacking from the skies, the most notable one being dragons. Because of this, they were often called “dragonward towers”.

It’s these little details that made Miri appreciate this particular game over many others of its kind. Realistically, if you took a realistically conventional medieval city and plopped it in a world that contained dragons—some of which might attack such cities for whatever reason—it would do very poorly in defending against such a threat. A more practical solution, particularly if magic was available, was to have a city defense system that’s designed to better counteract the threat of dragon attacks, which often attack while flying in the sky.

As she gazed at the city in the far distance, she could hear her stomach growling, more loudly than before. Appreciating the lore of this world was going to come later. Right now, she needed to find herself some grub.
