CHAPTER 11:THE ROAD AHEAD CHAPTER ONE

Chapter 11 – The Things Worse Than Zombies

The tension from the fight still hung in the air.

Kaito walked up behind Tokita and threw an arm around his neck.

“Dude,” he laughed, shaking his head. “You’re insane. How are you that strong? That’s not normal.”

  Tokita scratched his cheek casually.

“I don’t know, man. I just work out.”

“Work out?” Kaito stared at him. “That wasn’t working out. That was demolition.”

  Tokita smirked.

But his eyes flicked to Natsuki for just a second.

  You talk too much.

  Loser.

Natsuki said as he walks past Tokita,

Kaito narrowed his eyes slightly, sensing the attitude — but he let it slide.

They headed back into the classroom they’d claimed as a base.

  Everyone sat.

Aoi stood near the desk, arms folded.

“You’re not officially part of this team yet,” she said calmly.

Tokita dropped into a chair anyway.

“Didn’t ask to be, remember guys asked me to join".

Natsuki scoffed. “We’re not just picking up random strays.”

Nezuko lightly smacked Natsuki’s arm. "enough of your crap already"

Kaito stepped between them. “Relax. We’ll talk it out.”

Tokita leaned back in the chair.

  “Then talk.”

  Aoi exhaled slowly.

“If you’re staying with us, you need to understand what you’re walking into.”

  The room went quiet.

  The Truth About Nezuko

“When the outbreak started,” Aoi began, “Nezuko got attacked.”

  Tokita’s eyes shifted toward her.

“She was beaten badly. Someone saw it. They thought she was infected.”

  Nezuko looked down.

“But two days later,” Kaito continued, “that same person saw her again at a civilian shelter.”

  “Alive,” Natsuki added. “Perfectly fine.”

  The woman screamed. Called security.

“They tested her blood,” Aoi said. “Nothing. No infection. No mutation. Nothing abnormal.”

  Tokita’s eyes sharpened.

  “And that’s when it started.”

“Rumors,” Kaito muttered. “An immune girl.”

  “A cure,” Aoi corrected.

“And cures,” Natsuki said coldly, “get hunted.”

  Tokita leaned forward slightly now.

“You’re telling me zombies aren’t your biggest problem.”

  Aoi met his gaze.

  “Humans are.”

  Day Four of the Apocalypse

  That’s when they met.

Kaito had been waiting outside the hospital room when he felt it.

  A presence.

He looked up — and locked eyes with Aoi.

  Ability user.

  They both knew instantly.

  Some instinct.

  Some awareness.

The world had changed — and they could feel each other.

  They approached carefully.

By the sixth day of the apocalypse, they had formed a group.

  They had already fought looters.

  Kidnappers.

  Armed civilians.

People who wanted Nezuko for themselves.

“We didn’t trust each other at first,” Nezuko said quietly. “But they protected me.”

Kaito shrugged. “We’ve seen hell together.”

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

Tokita nodded slowly and said."damn in only a couple of days".

“So when you met me,” he said, “that was day eight.”

  “Exactly,” Aoi replied.

  The Real Question

  Aoi stepped closer.

“If people come for her — and they will — can you kill them?”

  Silence.

“You can kill zombies,” she continued. “They’re monsters.”

“But can you kill a human?”

  Tokita didn’t answer immediately.

  His expression changed.

  Not joking.

  Not cocky.

  Cold.

“If they’re good people,” he said calmly, “I won’t.”

  “And if they’re not?”

  His expression darkened.

  “I won’t hold back.”

  The room went still.

  Natsuki watched him carefully.

That wasn’t the answer of someone guessing.

That was the answer of someone who already knew.

  The Bigger Threat

“It’s not just the military,” Aoi said.

  “There are factions.”

  “Mercenaries.”

  “Assassins.”

“Death row inmates who awakened abilities.”

  Tokita blinked once.

“There are stronger ability users than you guys?”

  Natsuki laughed.

  “You think we’re special?”

  Aoi’s voice dropped.

“You haven’t seen real power yet.”

  Tokita looked down slightly.

  Other powerful ability users…

  Interesting.

  Why He’s Going to Tokyo

“I mean i know we asked you to tag along with us but Why are you even heading there?” Kaito asked.

  Tokita answered without hesitation.

  “My mom.”

  That caught them off guard.

“She works at a CDC branch lab in Tokyo,” he said. “Haven’t heard from her in a week.”

  He stood up.

“You need to get Nezuko there.”

“I need to see if my mom’s safe.”

  “Win-win.”

  Aoi studied him carefully.

  “You could be lying.”

  He shrugged.

  “You could be.”

  Kaito smirked.

  “Real name?”

  Tokita grinned.

  “Red.”

Natsuki groaned. “That’s not a real name.”

  Tokita stood up then said.

“For now that's good enough earn my trust then maybe I'll tell you guys my real name".

  The Warning

Before leaving the room, Aoi spoke again.

“Once we move toward Tokyo, it gets worse.”

  “Stronger infected.”

  “Organized hunters.”

“People who don’t hesitate to kill.”

  Nezuko looked at Tokita.

“As long as we stay low, we’ll be fine.”

  He smiled slightly.

“Yeah. It’s not like the whole world is against us.”

  Nobody laughed.

  Because they all knew.

  It was.

  The Black Uniform

  They handed Tokita new clothes.

  Black jacket with a hood.

  Black shirt.

  Baggy black pants.

  Fingerless gloves.

  Black canvas shoes.

He looked at himself and smirked.

  “Drip’s clean.”

Even Natsuki had to admit it.

  He looked different now.

  Sharper.

  More dangerous.

Like he belonged in the dark.

  They loaded into the truck.

  Weapons packed.

  Engine started.

  Tokyo.

  The lion’s den.

No one said it out loud.

  But everyone felt it.

  From this point forward —

  Anyone could die.

And something far worse than zombies was waiting.

Tokita leaned back in his seat, eyes half-closed.

  Other powerful ability users…

  His lips curved slightly.

  Now this is getting interesting.
