“Come on out Starshine” Daisy said throwing her Pokèball up in the air. A flash of red and a cute little pink Clefairy was standing in front of me. I kneeled down to get a better look at the little cutey. “Very cute, hello Starshine! Nice to meet you!” I said to the little Clefairy. I had returned Po and Rapunzel while waiting for the kids to come out so I could surprise them. “Come on out Po and Rapunzel” I said throwing both balls up in the air just like Daisy had. Two flashes of red and there stood Po and Rapunzel trying to look cool. “WHAT IS THAT THING!?!?” Shouted Daisy pointing at Po. “That’s my new forever friend, his name is Po and he is a Lickilicky. He evolved from a Lickitung after he learned the move Rollout. Rollout is a Rock type move that is from the Johto Region” I said like I was giving an education lecture. “Wow, he’s so big! Is he very strong?” asked Gary. “He is still pretty young, but he should be decently strong. Especially compared to the Pokèmon around here, he should be able to take care of us very well” I said with a smile. Po was blushing and looking at the ground. “I love his color and his little swirl of fur on his head!” said Daisy as she circled Po. Apparently that was the straw that broke the Camelrupt’s back because Po started rolling on the ground making funny sounds and hiding his face. “Does he do that often?” Daisy asked looking at Po oddly. “Mostly when he is excited or happy, everyone expresses happiness differently” I said laughing at Rapunzel trying to stop Po from hitting her. “Is your Tangela strong too?” asked Gary. “She is already much stronger than all the Pokèmon near here and should know some very strong grass moves” I told Gary with a smile. Rapunzel stood proud and swung one of her vines in the air and cracked it like a whip. “She just used Vine Whip to show how strong she is. As she grows, she is going to learn an even better move called Power Whip which can split boulders in half” I said watching her retract her vine. Rapunzel turned away trying to hide her embarrassment.
Everyone got to know each other, and we double checked we had everything we needed for the trip. “Okay my adventurers, it is time to get to Viridian City and get the food we need for our diet experiments” I said as everyone grabbed their wagons. Daisy and I each had one wagon per hand, and Gary had one single wagon. “Rapunzel you take the lead and alert us to anything lurking in the grass or in the trees, Po you take the rear and make sure nothing sneaks up on us, and finally Starshine you ride in a wagon and watch the sides. Everybody ready?” I called out. “Ready, Ready, Lick, Tang, Clefairy!” I heard back. “And away we go!” I said as I took my first steps on Route 1. Old beautiful trees that stood like tall giants from a storybook surrounded either side of the Route. A calm earthy smell came from the grass and bushes all around us. Sounds of Pidgey and Ratata could be heard all around us as they played and went about life. Before we could enjoy being surrounded by nature we had to walk through some tall grass with dense wood on our sides. “Beautiful” I said while scanning the woods and grass all around us. “Mr. Austin, is this different from how Routes look where you come from?” asked Daisy. “Yes, where I come from Routes are mostly surrounded by cities with very tall buildings, and the only way to get to nature like this is to go very far away from the city” I said imagining Los Angeles where I grew up. “I used to spend most of my time in nature like this looking for animals that I was studying” I said. “Oh you studied animals too?” Daisy asked. “Yes, I studied animals and Pokèmon where I came from” I said trying to save myself.
We had been walking about 30 minutes and had passed through several grassy areas and walked past several ledges. Rapunzel had cracked her vines at a few Rattata that were trying to look cool, but none of them wanted to tussle with her Vine Whip. Behind me, I could hear Po trying to make his tongue crack like Rapunzel’s vines. “Keep practicing Po, if you can copy Rapunzel and use some Grass energy, you could learn Power Whip too” I called back to him. “Lickitung and Lickilicky can use Power Whip?” asked Daisy. “Yeah, because of how strong Po’s tongue muscles are, he can learn Power Whip which can split boulders in two using Grass Energy” I replied. “Mr. Austin, what moves should I try to teach Starshine? I asked Grandpa but he said I should just train moves she already knows” Daisy asked me. “Daisy, you ready to learn something that no one else knows? Do you think you can keep it a secret?” I asked her in a serious tone. “Yes, I promise to not say anything to anyone except Grandpa. Gary, you have to promise too!” She said very sternly. “I promise too!” Gary said nodding his head. “All right, there are some types of Pokèmon you have never heard of. Starshine is one of them, she is a Fairy Type Pokèmon. People in Kanto think she is a normal type, but really she is a Fairy Type. She can use Fairy moves that draw power from emotions and specifically Clefairy and Clefable Fairy Moves also pull power from the Moon. It’s also why she will need a Moon Stone to evolve” I told both of the kids. There was nothing but silence for 5 minutes as both kids digested this revolution. Gary was the first to speak, “What Move Type is Fairy weak too?” Gary asked. “There are two main types they are weak to. One you are already familiar with and that’s Poison, and the other is another new type called Steel. In Kanto only two Pokèmon are Steel Type, Magnemite and Mangeton. They are Electric and Steel and can use Steel Moves like Flash Cannon which uses Steel Energy” I said feeling a bit like a Pokèdex. (Wait… has Professor Oak made a Pokèdex yet? Another problem to discuss with him.) I thought internally.

We were getting to the top of the hill when Daisy finally snapped out of her trance. “Mr. Austin, thank you for telling me about Starshine. A lot of events, experiences, and emotions are starting to make sense now. Would you still help me teach her some moves you recommend?” She asked me. “Of course Daisy! If either of you ever need anything or want to discuss something feel free to drop by the lab and I’ll help however I can” I said with a smile. Right as I finished, we created the hill and were able to see Viridian City below. A small city wrapped in beautiful shades of green, flowers all around, and rustic well maintained buildings. Past it, a Forest stretching on for what seems like forever. “What a nice small city” I said while taking it all in. “Hmm? I guess it’s nice” said Gary. “We see it pretty often, so we are just used to it” said Daisy trying to clear up Gary’s response. Another 10 minutes later and we arrived at the Market, Daisy and Gary went in first while I lined up all the wagons. Upon entering, I noticed how much it felt just like a grocery store back home except the shelves had tons of goods for people and Pokèmon. “Here he comes now” Daisy said while leaning against the counter talking to the clerk there. “Hello, my name is Austin, and I’m Professor Oak’s new aide. Please treat me well” I said giving a small bow. “Geez man, no need to be so formal” said the shopkeeper. “Mr. Austin is just nice is all” said Gary. “Name’s Michael and this is my family’s store. If you need anything from groceries to Pokèmon accessories you just come to me, okay?” He said shaking my hand. “Thanks Michael, I’m sure I’m going to need your services quite a bit while working with Professor Oak” I responded. “I like the sound of that! Looking forward to working with you!” Michael said excitedly. “Okay everyone, pull your wagons to the back and I will load them up for you” Michael said heading to the back of the store. Around back, it looked just like a traditional grocery store with some loading platforms for trucks, and a set of stairs leading to the ground floor where we stood. “Gary and Daisy, help pass those bags down to me, and I’ll load up the wagons” I told them. 15 minutes of passing the bags along and all 5 wagons were tightly packed and ready to roll back to the lab. “Say hi to Professor Oak for me!” Michael said while waving goodbye to us. “Hey is there any place we can get a quick bite to go?” I asked the kids as we were walking. “Sure! There are some stands by the main road where we can grab some quick food” Daisy said as she lead the way. We grabbed a couple Tauros skewers and a can of lemonade each and ate quickly. Nothing special, but not bad and definitely cheap. “Can’t say no to a quick easy meal like that” I said as we started to head back towards Route 1.
“Hey Daisy, do you know who the gym leader of Viridian City is right now?” I asked her. “I’m not sure what his name is, but I know he uses Ground Pokèmon like Rhydon” she responded. (Hmm sounds like it is already Giovanni then) I thought to myself. “How often do people get all 8 badges here in Kanto?” I asked. “Not very often, only about 1 out of maybe 50 trainers even make it to the 8th gym” Gary responded. “Wow Gary, how did you know that already?” I asked him sounding impressed. “I want to be a Pokèmon Trainer and beat the Elite Four and become the Kanto Champion!” he said full of excitement and confidence. “You know what Gary, I bet you’ll be able to do it!” I said knowing exactly what happens. “Mr. Austin, when I get my Pokèmon in 5 years, can you help me make it strong so we can win?” Gary asked me. “Of course Gary, just remember that strength isn’t everything. Some things like love, compassion, and empathy can help Pokèmon grow beyond what is normally possible” I told him sternly. “Okay, I’ll focus on learning everything I can and being nice to Pokèmon to help them be the strongest” he said looking at Rapunzel who had cracked her vines at a group of Rattata.
An hour later, we arrived back at Pallet Town. We were making our way down the hill when we noticed smoke coming from Professor Oak’s lab. “Grandpa! Gramps!” the kids cried out. “Quick, grab the wagons and follow me” I said taking the lead. “Po, Rapunzel, and Starshine prepare yourselves for battle!” I yelled as we were running down the hill together. As we were running up the hill to the lab, we could all hear the sounds of people yelling and what sounded like battles. Right as we got to the top, I turned the corner and saw two people wearing Team Rocket uniforms… “Po let’s hit them with Rollout! Rapunzel use Vine Whip to wrap them up after Po runs them over! Starshine help keep anyone who we miss from running away!” I yelled over the sound of the fire.
