Chapter # 1) The Lantern (1)

“May the higher being allow all the people of this world to attain the light of the afterlife in a way that they do not have to see much misery like they have had to face in this world.”

It was the prayer’s ending that the religious scholar made after the official ritual prayers of days were told by the people in this new world where l had stepped into for the first time after such a long time. I had been stationed in the far away cities to protect this land which had been said to be blessed by the angels and the higher being himself so the righteous and the truthful could follow the teachings of the light and make way for the people. It was a good thing that these fellows were doing the best they could with the life they had at their disposal unlike the person l was, who had lost everything and has nowhere to turn to and had accepted the new light but did not expected that this light had to be protected and instead of it protecting him, he had to be the one who had to protect this light.

He did not have a very deep and sorrowful story, just something of someone who had to struggle tooth and nail to get to the moment he had reached.

After the ritual prayer ending, the people shifted towards their homes as this was the time where people did not think much about the issues as they just had to get home and get their rest so they might start their lives the next day until they left this world and waited for the resurrection of the promised day which l also wished for dearly as no one wants to remain dead and wants a life where they can live forever and have things to focus on. Leaving these things aside, l had to focus on the timing that what was soon going to happen as this was the time when the night was getting on and l had the awful duty of lightening the lanterns all over the city of the this blessed land of the holy people and l did not want to get my pay get cut because of my laziness.

I took a fire torch and some of the people who were of a little lower standing than me to come with me. We all followed the paths and they changed the oil and l very carefully lightened the lamps along the various routes of the city as the criminals were not going to stop their habits and the darkness made them a little bolder. There was also a sight of these lanterns lit that made the heart of a person light up in a way that normal people did not understand normally. This was a mundane duty but l liked it as it was also a way to look into other people's lives and hear the various little things happening in their homes and also for us guys to socialize as we gossiped and told the various things we faced all day. These people were called slaves for unknown reasons and had to face worse things than the people thought of and this was something that people normally did not know but l did not think much about it as these people were very clever and had many things to share and had very sharp ears so it was a fun time to hear them speak as they told you the matters of men and women that one could not hear except in the courts of the kings and the leaders of this whole nation of the bearers of light.

“Did you hear, Durani Asdiran, a new king is going to be crowned in this nation and it is going to be held tomorrow.” Zayd said while putting the oil lantern aside and telling me this.

“Oh! May The higher being allow him to reach great heights but there is no new heir to the queen that may be crowned at this time.” l asked, not knowingly the details of these things as they were better adept to these things.

“Yes! The queen has no heir but she is going to marry the late king’s uncle and he will be the new king.”

  “Oh!”

It was common for the king’s brother to become king in case of his death but an uncle and considering that the king was in his middle age so l had thought that his uncle would have to be in his late fifties, maybe.

“What is the age of our new king?”

“Hmmm .... he is the age of that person’s father. We take our favorite almond bread.” Umar said while trying to guess the age of the person.

These guys were not literate as they had not been given the proper education that the normal people had been given and also, they would not have tried to get knowingly their free spirit, they would have made the teachers angry and get themselves kicked out of the teaching classes of these parts and if l had listened correctly, they did get kicked out of them.

“Then our new king is going to be of the mighty age of 77 years .... a good number, if l says depending as there are 7 skies and 7 layers of earth.”

I said knowingly that 7 was a good and blessed number, if one thought of the various things that happened in this world than it was full of good omen for this nation and that this would have proven to be of good fortune and that the angels would have blessed us for being able to live in such a heavenly place of a kingdom which was in the heartland of the Muslim ummah. I was recounting these things when l heard a yelp like someone had fallen nearby so l looked at the two and they rolled their eyes and took my torch.

“Only a couple of lanterns are to be lit, we can take care of them. You go and take care of your duties.” Umar said.
