6 - Town of Fish - Maeve

  Dear Risa,

You’ll never guess what I did last night. Mostly because you’ve never looked at a map of my town’s area.

So, our town is on a river, at the base of a big mountain. Inside that mountain is a kobold village. We do some trade and stuff, but until last night I'd never been there.

They always have a huge party on the first night of summer, and we decided to crash it.

…By “we” I mean me, Maki, Cali and Luke. If I ever say “we” without an explanation, assume that’s the group.

So anyhow, it takes like two hours to get from our town to the entrance of the kobold town. We’d been walking like an hour and a half when we discovered Cali’s little sister followed us. We couldn't send her home alone, so we dragged her along.

We didn't fully crash the party, since it was kobold-only and we would have been caught so fast, but we got to watch. Kobold music is amazing. I wish they could send us recordings, and teach us how to dance. You’d love it.

After we’d been listening a while, a baby dragon appeared out of nowhere and declared we were his prisoners. I just about lost my mind when Luke told him he didn't want to be a prisoner, and that completely stumped the dragon.

Yeah. I really need to ask Cali why they broke up.

Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.

Anyhow the baby dragon figured out that if he took us to his dad, the very adult dragon king, we’d have to do anything we were told. Before he could go get his dad, Cali… used a little, tiny amount of charm magic.

Which, no, she doesn't have permission to do that. She’s only got a permit to use charm on animals. Dragons be people.

Sooo we ran, and when we got home her mom was freaking out about Wisp being gone at night, and Wisp told about the charm use, which is a serious, legal issue, so we had to tell Mom, and for the moment we’re all grounded.

  Yay us.

Mom spent today waiting for someone to come from the kobold village to discuss Cali’s “attack” on, well, the prince. But no one did. So we’re hoping no one noticed.

I kinda… feel mad about it? Like, we are legally adults. And one of us did break a law, with clear rules about punishments. Which, Cali having her permit revoked and getting marked would suck, yes.

But it would feel better than being grounded. We aren’t ten. We shouldn’t be spared legal repercussions due to nepotism. Which is exactly what’s happening.

I mean, if someone does come down, Mom’s plan is to act like she didn’t know about it. Which I get, and yeah I’d probably do the same thing if I was in her position, but it still doesn’t sit right with me.

So, we’ll see what happens. If the dragons figure it out and get mad, or if they leave us alone.

And yeah, I know writing down all the illegal things I do probably isn’t wise, but, meh. I’m admitting we weren’t punished as we should have been. So it’s fine.

Besides, I know you won’t ever tell anyone, Miss Yes-Officer-I'm-Of-Legal-Drinking-Age.

  Kindest Regards,

  Maeve Zee
