Later in the afternoon the setting sun bled through colored windows, streaking patterns over the battered floorboards and worn furniture. Outside, the festive chaos of Lunthale marched on, oblivious to the storm the guild had just endured.
Inside, the mood was... different.
Ren slowly blinked awake on the cot, the ache in his limbs nothing compared to the weight in his chest. Elly sat nearby, hair slightly tangled, cradling a now-sleepy Seri who refused to let go of Ren's cloak. Koirin nuzzled her side protectively.
Elly: "Ren...?"
Her voice trembled—relief laced with worry.
Seri stirred, still half-asleep.
Seri: "He's back..."
Before Ren could speak, the door burst open.
The entire team spilled into the room like a dam finally giving way.
Rica. Marian. Iver. Josh. Kristie. Jonax. Lily. Cedy. Rej.
All accounted for now. All alive.
Rej was the first to react.
Rej: "About time, Sleeping Beauty. You missed the part where we almost died again. Wanna talk about it?"
Cedy flopped beside Marian with a dramatic huff.
Cedy: "Can we, like, not have an emotional breakdown before dinner for once?"
Kristie: "This is dinner now. Screaming, scolding, existential dread."
Iver, leaning against the frame, arms crossed, kept his gaze on Ren.
Iver: "You didn't hesitate, but that won't be you if you did."
Josh, still bruised from his match, let out a low whistle.
Josh: "Bro.Rica explained to us what happened and you were like... ice and fire and rage all rolled into a sword with legs. You even made Vultherin look chill."
Rica approached, folding her arms tightly.
Rica: "You didn't feel pain. You didn't blink. You terrified Valter—and you terrified me."
Ren looked down at his hands.
Ren: "I didn't mean to. It wasn't me... but it was something inside me."
Lily sat near the windowsill, eyeing him with a mix of concern and thoughtfulness.
Lily: "Maybe the that Starbeast inside you is waking up. That stag wasn't lying... We're being drawn into something big. Bigger than us."
Jonax, quiet until now, stepped closer.
Jonax: "You scared us. But you came back. Don't forget that."
Elly, still holding Seri, spoke softly.
Elly: "We were the targets this time, and you almost lost yourself because of that."
Seri, her small fingers still clinging to Ren's sleeve, sniffled.
Seri: "Don't go cold again. It felt like the stars stopped singing..."
Rej threw an arm dramatically over her eyes.
Rej: "Okay, that was poetic and all, but can we address the bigger mystery?"
Everyone turned.
Rej: "Why does every other person in this group get some kind of superpowered rage mode or divine bond while I'm still stuck trying to make eye contact with a glowy squirrel in the woods?!"
Cedy raised a finger solemnly.
Cedy: "Because you're loud and bonds like peace."
Rej: "Like your the one to talk! You also don't have a bond yet!"
Kristie snorted.
Kristie: "Rej's bond would be a chaos pigeon. It'd explode on arrival."
Everyone laughed—tired but together.
Rica softened slightly, looking at Ren again.
Rica: "You weren't alone back there. And you're not alone now. Whatever this is inside you—we'll figure it out. Together."
Ren, voice low, nodded.
Ren: "Thank you. All of you."
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
A moment passed. The warmth of the fire flickered against their faces. No more masks. Just friends.
Cedy popped a berry into her mouth.
Cedy: "So... who's gonna tell Naeva she can't just keep knocking people out when they get cool?"
Marian: "Please don't. She'll do it again."
Seri: "She was sparkly though."
Rej: "Okay, sparkly and terrifying. Like a glitter bomb made of judgment."
Josh: "That's it. I'm naming my next bond 'Judgment Glitter.'"
Kristie: "Only if it shoots rainbows and disappointment."
Another round of laughter—light, chaotic, full of love.
And in the quiet, Vultherin watched still... ears twitching.
The stars were moving. The storm was building.
But for now?
They had each other.

Late Night – Lunthale's Town Circle
The festivities had faded into silence. Lanterns once alight now floated dimly through the night sky—glowing ghosts above a town that danced too hard, too fast, and too loud.
Ren stood alone at the center of the plaza, leaning on the fountain's edge, his frostflame fox curled at his feet. Vultherin's fur flickered blue and white with each slow breath, as if sensing the unease stirring within its tamer.
The stone under Ren's fingers was cold. But not colder than what had settled inside him earlier.
That feeling... that emptiness. That numbness.
No rage. No fear. Just action.
Automatic. Efficient. Relentless.
And it scared him.
He didn't even flinch when Valter stole Elly. He just moved. Like instinct. Like programming.
Ren: "What's left of me if I lose the warmth? If I become just..."
His thoughts scattered when someone approached.
Lily.
She gave no warning, just appeared beside him like she had every right to be there.
Lily: "You always pick dramatic spots when you want to sulk. Should I start bringing a spotlight and violin next time?"
Ren blinked. "...Could use the soundtrack."
She snorted, dropping beside him on the ledge, pulling her jacket tighter.
Lily: "What was that, back there? Against Valter."
Ren hesitated.
Lily: "You went still. Too still. Like you stopped being you."
He didn't respond right away. He didn't need to. She could see it in his eyes—he didn't know what scared him more: the monster in front of him, or the one inside.
Lily: "You scared us."
Ren turned slightly, brow twitching.
Lily: "Don't give me that look. You did. Rica looked like she'd seen a ghost. You weren't just fighting, Ren. You were... gone."
Ren: "...I did what I had to."
Lily: "No. You did more than that. You became something else."
Ren fell quiet again.
Lily: "You always do this. Push everyone away. Pretend you're just 'focused' or 'cold' or whatever your excuse is today."
He flinched, only barely. But she caught it.
Lily: "So I'll ask you now... When are you going to stop pretending?"
Ren: "Pretending what?"
Lily: "That you don't feel anything."
She looked straight at him now.
Lily: "That you don't care. That nothing gets to you. That you're just the smart, reliable one who always makes the hard choices and shrugs off the weight."
He said nothing.
She kept going.
Lily: "Because I see it, Ren. We all do. The way your jaw tightens when someone gets hurt. The way you looked when Elly was taken. The way you froze after Naeva stopped you from spiraling."
Ren finally spoke, voice low.
Ren: "So what? I let go for one second and look what happened. I nearly lost control."
Lily: "You didn't lose control. You lost yourself."
That hit.
Lily: "And I'm scared, Ren. Because I don't know if you're ever coming back from that."
She pushed off the fountain, standing now. Not angry. Not yelling.
Just... sad.
Lily: "You're not broken. You're just tired of hurting."
Her voice trembled slightly.
Lily: "But if you keep hiding, if you keep pretending none of us matter—then one day, you'll actually make it true. You'll forget how to come back."
She stood up, pausing just once more.
Lily: "...You always act like you're the one protecting us. But who's protecting you?".
Ren remained seated, his posture composed but visibly brittle, like a porcelain figure one tap away from cracking. The silence between him and Lily was no longer quiet—it was brimming with tension.
Lily didn't leave yet.
She stood beside him, eyes locked on his profile.
Lily: "And what about Elly?"
Ren flinched, almost imperceptibly. But Lily noticed.
Lily: "Don't act like you don't know."
Ren: "...That's not something I can answer."
Lily: "Why not?"
She stepped in front of him now, hands clenched into fists at her side.
Lily: "Because it's easier to pretend? Because if you don't look, you don't feel? Or is it because of what happened between you and her before?"
Ren looked down. His jaw clenched.
Lily: "She still looks at you like you're the sky after a storm. Like no matter what happened before, she still—"
She caught herself.
Lily: "—Still sees something worth hoping for."
Ren didn't respond.
He didn't need to.
The way his shoulders tensed—the flicker in his eyes—spoke volumes.
Lily: "You keep pushing her away. You say you're not ready. That it's not the right time. That you have more important things to focus on. And maybe that's true. But have you ever stopped to ask how much that hurts her?"
The wind brushed past them, tugging at Lily's sleeves, but she stood rooted—unmoving.
Lily: "So I'll ask again... is it because of what happened back then?"
Ren inhaled slowly. Closed his eyes.
Ren: "I... don't know."
Lily's voice softened, just a fraction.
Lily: "You do know. You just don't want to say it."
Ren finally looked up at her. For once, no wit. No deflection. Just that guarded sorrow behind his eyes.
Ren: "If I let myself feel again... if I open that door... I'm afraid I'll destroy everything. That I'll fall back into who I used to be."
A beat.
Ren: “I’ve seen who I am when I stop caring. Cold. Efficient. Unfeeling. That’s not a hero. That’s just... a blade someone forgot to sheath.”
Lily: "You think you're protecting us by building walls. But you're not. You're just locking yourself in."
She knelt in front of him now, matching his gaze, more gentle than before.
Lily: "We don't need you to be perfect, Ren. We need you to be real. Even if it means being scared. Even if it means you're still healing."
She hesitated.
Then added, more quietly—
Lily: "Even if it means choosing."
Ren looked away.
The weight of her words lingered—loud in the quiet.
But still, he gave no answer.
Because he didn't have one yet.
And Lily... she understood.
She stood, brushing off her coat.
Lily: "I didn't come here for answers, you know. I just came to make sure you knew the questions still mattered."
She took a few steps, then stopped.
Glancing back with a faint, sad smile.
Lily: "You're not alone, Ren. No matter how hard you try to be."
And then she walked off, her figure fading into the quiet night.
Ren stayed seated.
The fountain's gentle flow was the only thing keeping him grounded.
That, and the ghost of her voice echoing in his chest.
...
Day 4: Departure from Lunthale,
The morning air was crisp with the scent of dew and fresh bread from the stalls nearby. Birds chirped like they hadn't witnessed a town get partially leveled just days ago. The festival banners still fluttered overhead—faded, torn, and oddly cheerful given the lingering tension.
Stray Dawn was already up.
The carriage Naeva left behind stood gleaming under the sunlight, sturdy wheels and elegant crest glinting. Bonds were being roused, gear loaded, and bags slung over shoulders as the group prepared for another day on the road.
Ren stood near the front, quietly helping load the final crates onto the carriage. He avoided eye contact with Lily, who stood several paces away, checking her pack while sneakily stealing glances at him.
Their silence was... painfully obvious.
Josh, chewing on a piece of dried jerky, leaned in toward Iver with a sly grin.
Josh: "I mean... they were alone at the fountain last night. Who knows what else got confessed, right?"
Iver: "Don't start."
Josh smirked wider, voice louder now.
Josh: "Maybe they already did it last night?"
Elly: "They did NOT!"
Her face turned scarlet so fast it could've lit a torch. The sudden shout made everyone pause mid-pack.
Jonax, arms crossed, scowled.
Jonax: "Josh. Seriously?"
Josh: "What? I'm just stating what everyone's thinking!"
Rej dramatically gasped, covering Seri's ears with both hands.
Rej: "Innocent child here! Josh, keep it PG!"
Seri peeked between Rej's fingers, confused.
Seri: "What did they do?"
Kristie snorted.
Kristie: "Oh, sweetheart, when you're older and wiser, you'll understand awkward tension and unresolved chemistry."
Cedy: "Or heartbreak. Maybe both."
Kristie: "...Hot."
Ren finally groaned.
Ren: "Can someone run him over with the carriage?"
Lily: "Gladly."
Josh raised his hands in surrender, still grinning.
Josh: "Okay, okay. I'll stop. I just hope one of you writes a song about this someday."
Cedy: "Already taking notes."
Rica, now seated on top of the carriage and checking the map, finally called out.
Rica: "Alright, teasing time's over. Let's move. We've got three days left to reach Lithrium."
She rolled the map up and looked ahead.
Rica: "Next stop—Moltrenhold. Mining town. Dusty, loud, full of people who swing axes better than they hold conversations."
Marian: "So basically, Kristie's dream town."
Kristie: "Oh absolutely."
With a final tug on the reins, the carriage wheels began to creak forward. Vultherin leapt lightly beside Ren. Drakehound barked and ran ahead. Queen flew overhead like a scout, majestic and calm.
As they rolled out of Lunthale, the city slowly disappeared behind them—its chaos, memories, and battles now trailing in their wake.
Inside the carriage, the group finally began to settle.
Rica took the navigator's seat beside the driver.
Jonax, Elly, Seri and Lily shared one bench—though Elly kept stealing glances at Ren through the corner of her eye.
Kristie leaned back with a yawn, head on Cedy's shoulder.
Rej and Marian were sorting leftover festival snacks.
Iver sat across from Ren, eyeing him with a raised brow.
Iver: "...You sure you're okay?"
Ren: "...Define okay."
Iver smirked.
Iver: "Yep. Classic Ren."
Outside, the path to Moltrenhold beckoned with winding hills and distant plumes of mining dust. And above them all, the sun rose higher—
Another day, another step closer to fate.
Lily didn’t come to fight. She came to remind Ren of something he’s been trying really hard to forget — that somewhere beneath all that control and cold logic, there’s still a man who feels.
“what happened back then”?
Was it something they shared… or something Ren did that changed everything between them?
The way she speaks to him — like someone who’s seen the best and worst of him — feels less like comfort and more like unfinished history.
before all this?
Comrades? Friends who crossed a line? Something more that time (or guilt) forced them to bury?
And when she said she was scared he’d never come back… was she talking about the man he is now, or the one he used to be?
