Day 1 of 7 — Farewell, Strayhold... Hello, Unknown
The wind whispered through the morning mist as Stray Dawn stood before the gates of their home—Strayhold—a place forged through fire and healed with memory.
The sun crept slowly over the trees, casting long shadows across the ground they had once defended with their lives.
Scars still lingered on the building. The roof bore faint burns, the outer fence still smelled of fresh-cut wood, and the soil was disturbed where battle once raged. But beneath the repairs, a heartbeat remained—of shared stories, broken walls, rebuilt friendships.
A silence settled.
Ren stood at the front, cloak rippling slightly in the wind. Vultherin clung quietly to his shoulder, eyes scanning ahead as if sensing something distant on the horizon.
Iver exhaled deeply, slinging his blade over his shoulder.
Josh whistled low, hand gripping Hornbeast's reins.
Josh: "Feels weird... leaving it behind. Like we're not coming back."
Elly tightened her cloak, Koirin stirring faintly in her satchel.
Elly: "It's like... this place kept us safe. Even when it almost fell apart."
Kristie pressed a hand gently against the wooden door.
Kristie: "Try not to burn down while we're gone, okay?"
Ren turned, eyes steady.
Ren: "We leave it now, but not forever. This house... it's the mark of how far we've come. When we return, we'll come back stronger."
Cedy, juggling a stone lazily in one hand, let it drop and shrugged.
Cedy: "Then let's not die before that happens."
The moment was interrupted by the sound of soft, purposeful footsteps approaching from the trail.
Lyra of the Silent Thorn emerged into view—flawless posture, hair tied back neatly, dressed in light traveling garb that still somehow looked regal. Her presence felt both inviting and sharp, like silk over steel.
Lyra: "Stray Dawn?"
Rica turned, already familiar, offering a casual nod.
Rica: "You're from the Guild. Lyra, right?"
Lyra smiled warmly, her voice crisp but kind.
Lyra: "The one and only. The Guild has assigned me to be your guide on the road to Lithrium. I've traversed the route before—twice."
Josh grinned, adjusting his scarf, stepping forward with a mock flourish.
Josh: "Well, well. If guidance looks like this, I might just get lost on purpose."
Jonax shot him a side glance so sharp it could've drawn blood.
Jonax: "Focus, lover boy. We're on a mission, remember?"
Lyra laughed—light, charming, just enough to disarm.
Lyra: "Sorry, Josh, but you're not quite my type. I prefer a little... restraint."
Then she walked past him smoothly, her eyes landing on Iver.
Lyra: "Iver, isn't it? You're taller than I expected."
Iver blinked. Once. Twice.
Iver: "Uh... thanks?"
She smiled at him with an amused tilt of her head—playful, calculated.
Off to the side, Rej nudged Marian.
Rej: "Someone's about to steal your thunder, Kristie."
Marian snorted.
Marian: "Yeah, better tighten your leash."
Kristie tried to laugh it off, flipping her ponytail.
Kristie: "Oh please. Iver's not that easy, and why would I even care in the first place?"
But her hand briefly clenched her glove tighter than necessary.
Meanwhile, Ren's eyes narrowed slightly, lips pressed into a thin line.
There was nothing wrong with Lyra. Her story checked out. Her posture was perfect. But still—something in her tone, in her smile—felt rehearsed. Smooth.
Too smooth.
Ren wasn't the only one. Elly, standing just beside him, watched Lyra out of the corner of her eye, her hand gently stroking Koirin. Even Lily, typically quiet in moments like these, glanced at Ren and whispered softly.
Lily: "You feel that too?"
Ren nodded, almost imperceptibly.
Ren: "Something's off... but we'll keep watch."
And just like that, the silence returned.
Stray Dawn—plus one—turned toward the road ahead.
The wind shifted.
The forest parted.

And the journey to Lithrium began.
...
The trees of Aelwood Forest stretched high like cathedral pillars, filtering sunlight into dappled gold across the mossy trail. Birds chirped softly above, and far off, the murmur of a stream played harmony with the crunch of boots on dirt.
Despite the shadowed tales that haunted this forest... it felt peaceful.
Lyra walked at the front, one hand resting lightly on her hip, the other gesturing as if conducting a scenic tour rather than guiding a band of battle-scarred misfits through a forest filled with monsters and bandits.
Lyra: "To your left—see that twisted birch tree? Locals call it the Widow's Knot. Legend says a noble once proposed to his lover there... but she ran off with a bard instead. He died heartbroken, and now if you whisper your crush's name under that tree, it's cursed to chase you."
She glanced over her shoulder, smiling sweetly.
Lyra: "Any volunteers?"
Kristie blinked.
Kristie: "...Why does your voice sound like that's actually happened?"
Cedy: "And why do you sound like that excites you?"
Lyra only gave a mysterious wink and continued walking, boots light against the dirt like she floated.
The forest thickened as they passed under ancient canopies. Her voice barely lowered.
Lyra: "This next bend? The path narrows because a merchant caravan was ambushed here. The trees still drink from what spilled."
She paused, knelt briefly, and pointed to faint crimson stains barely visible on stone.
Lyra: "See? Still reddish. Nature's way of remembering."
Rej shivered dramatically.
Rej: "Okay. You're creeping me out in stereo."
Even Marian gripped her blade tighter.
Marian: "This girl gives me more goosebumps than the bandits ever did."
Yet for all her eerie storytelling, Lyra had a way of easing the tension. When a group of foragers startled them—just tired travelers with baskets—she diffused the moment instantly, even offering them a route around bandit traps.
Her laughter was light, contagious. When Josh cracked one of his usual "if we die, I'm blaming Rica" jokes, Jonax groaned, but even she cracked a small smirk when Lyra mimed fainting dramatically.
Lyra: "Oh, brave knight! Save me from the perils of sarcasm!"
Josh laughed.
Josh: "If you insist my Queen, I shall save you even with the cost of my life."
Jonax: "Keep flirting, and you'll need saving from me."
Meanwhile, Iver walked more quietly than usual. Usually, he led the vanguard beside Ren—but now he hovered just behind Lyra. Arms crossed, but his eyes occasionally flicked her way.
Once, when she stumbled slightly over a loose root, he instinctively reached forward.
Lyra: "Oh? Were you about to catch me?"
Iver: "You're agile enough. You didn't need help."
Lyra: "Mm. But you moved anyway, Teehee."
Iver blinked. His mouth opened to say something logical, practical—his usual.
Nothing came out.
He coughed, stepped back, and pulled his scarf higher.
Rej and Marian watched from the rear. The teasing began instantly.
Rej: "You see that twitch?"
Marian: "He's stammering in his soul."
Kristie walked by them, chewing her lip before mumbling under her breath.
Kristie: "She's not that charming."
Ren, walking beside Elly and Lily, had been watching quietly. Earlier, he'd felt... off. Like Lyra's aura didn't match her steps. But now? The way she guided them through the thickest parts of the forest with ease, the way the team responded to her—laughing more than they had in days—it was easy to brush it off.
Just nerves. Paranoia. Maybe even envy of her effect.
Elly leaned close, whispering.
Elly: "She's... confident."
Lily, glancing ahead, quietly added.
Lily: "But she knows exactly how we look at her."
Ren said nothing, but Vultherin let out a low chuff on his shoulder.
...
The stillness shattered.
From the dense green of Aelwood, war-cries rose like thunder. Trees swayed violently as dozens of masked figures surged forward—cloaks snapping, blades glinting, boots pounding the dirt. Bandits. But these weren't mere highway thieves. They were trained, brutal, and prepared.
Worse, they brought monsters.
From behind them roared a Stonehide Tuskboar, its armor plated like natural bronze and tusks thick as tree limbs.
Overhead shrieked a Bleakclaw Hawk, its eyes glowing green with hunting rage.
Slithering at the rear was a Fangspine Slithermaw, fangs glistening, scales spiked, tail snapping like a whip.
And finally, a Coalback Ursalord—towering, black-furred, muscles rippling like steel cords beneath its hide—bellowed a challenge as it pounded toward the center.
Josh: "Bandits with Bonds—seriously?! Who gave these thugs training arcs?!"
Hornbeast roared and charged forward, crashing into the Stonehide Tuskboar in a brutal collision of tusk and horn. The forest floor quaked under their skirmish.
Ren stood tall, Vultherin beside him, the Frostflame Fox snarling—its fur flaring with alternating blasts of fire and frost. With a whip of its tail, it unleashed a spiral of cold fire, slicing into two charging bandits with terrifying grace.
Ren: "We hold here. Form the circle!"
Iver positioned himself near the front line, his stance steady as Drakehound—sleek, obsidian-scaled and fire-eyed—let loose a low growl and tackled an oncoming spearman.
Behind him, Lyra leaned nonchalantly opening her parasol.
Lyra: "And here we have it, folks! The legendary Stray Dawn surrounded on all flanks! Odds are three to one—spectacular numbers, really. Bets, anyone?"
Iver: "Focus."
Lyra: "Focused. I'm focused on the drama."
She twirled her parasol, utterly unbothered.
Kristie flipped over a fallen log, chucking a flash pellet into a cluster of bandits. It exploded in blinding light as Snarl, her Wargpup, pounced from the smoke and bit down on the Slithermaw's tail.
Kristie: "Snarl, no! You are NOT eating that!"
Rej: "Shouldn't we be more worried about us getting eaten?!"
Cedy flung sharpened blades of metal using raw kinetic bursts, ducking just in time as the Bleakclaw Hawk dive-bombed her.
Cedy: "Bird incoming! Somebody shoot that thing down!"
Jonax, already raising her bow, didn't hesitate.
Jonax: "Got it, but how many of them are there?"
The arrow flew true—striking the Bleakclaw's wing. It screeched and tumbled, crashing through leaves.
Marian charged with a snarl of her own, glaive spinning, clearing a path toward the Coalback Ursalord.
Scruffler, her leaf-maned canine bond, bounded beside her, leaping from root to root with nimble steps. Together, they struck from two angles—Marian slicing, Scruffler blinding with burst pollen from its mane.
Marian: "Come on then, Yogi-from-hell!"
The Ursalord swung a clawed paw—missing by inches—but shattered a boulder instead.
Rica, standing atop a stump like a commander, issued her calm order.
Rica: "Clear the air if you want me to drop lightning."
The Aether Dragon Queen coiled upward with majestic grace, light bending around her serpentine body as she released a radiant beam of energy.
The Bleakclaw, still flapping weakly, was obliterated mid-sky—scattering feathers like stars.
Kristie, watching from below, whistled.
Kristie: "Okay, that's hot."
Rej: "Yeah. Remind me never to sass Rica again."
Lily held her glowing shield steady, guarding Seri and Elly who were positioned near the supply bags. Her arms trembled slightly, but she kept her stance unbroken.
Lily: "Hold! I've got you!"
Elly, cradling Koirin, let the Starbeast hover up and begin pulsing waves of calm, defensive energy, slowly knitting wounds and stabilizing morale.
Elly: "Stay close... I'll do what I can..."
Rej was swinging a frying pan she had pulled from somewhere, using it like a mace.
Rej: "Why do I always end up in these messes?!"
Kristie: "Because you talk too loud!"
Rej: "Do not talk about loudness, princess grenade!"
Back in the front, a bandit with jagged dual blades lunged toward Lyra, aiming straight for her unguarded side.
She... sidestepped.
Not flinched. Not panicked. Just casually moved as if shifting out of sunlight. The dagger struck a tree behind her.
Lyra: "Oh no~ Someone protect the weak, fragile guide!"
Iver's blade cut the bandit down with a flash.
Iver: "You could help, you know."
Lyra fluttered her lashes at him from behind his back.
Lyra: "Oh, darling. If I was any help, wouldn't that ruin your chivalrous charm?"
Another bandit charged—this one with heavier armor and a warhammer.
Iver stepped forward—but Lyra tugged him lightly by the cloak.
Lyra: "Incoming from the left."
He pivoted just in time to parry the downswing, then responded with a brutal slash across the attacker's chest.
Iver: "...How'd you see that?"
Lyra: "I'm observant~"
He narrowed his eyes but said nothing.
Meanwhile, Kristie was mid-air, having launched off Snarl's back, chucking another flash pellet straight into a bandit's helmet.
Kristie: "Hey, Iver! Hope your girlfriend's worth all this extra weight!"
Iver: "She's not my—!"
He blocked another strike.
Lyra leaned into his shoulder with a purr of amusement.
Lyra: "You are fun when you're flustered."
Cedy, lobbing another spell, rolled her eyes.
Cedy: "We're gonna die, and the last thing I'll hear is flirting noises."
The Slithermaw, enraged, flung Snarl away with its tail. Kristie caught him, tumbling backward.
Kristie: "You okay, mutt?!"
Snarl licked her face and yipped.
Cedy: "More on the left!"
Josh: "Tuskboar's not letting up!"
Hornbeast grunted, one leg bleeding but still brawling tooth-and-nail with the Stonehide.
Ren: "Switch it!"
He pointed.
Ren: "Vultherin, with Josh! Iver, take the flank!"
Vultherin leapt across the battlefield, frostfire exploding on impact as it flanked the Tuskboar. Hornbeast roared with renewed strength.
Lyra, behind Iver, still hadn't lifted a single weapon.
Instead, she provided... commentary.
Lyra: "And here comes Iver the Unmoved, clean pivot, sharp slash—oooh, nice form, ten out of ten footwork!"
Iver: "Do something useful!"
Lyra: "I'm moral support, dear."
Jonax: "Can your moral support throw daggers?!"
Lyra tilted her head, easily sidestepping another thrown dagger.
Lyra: "Nope. But I can dodge them with flair."
Jonax groaned.
Jonax: "Josh, control your fangirl."
Josh: "Hey, I'm just enjoying the view—OW OW OW—okay, okay, Jonax, ease up!"
She had him by the ear.
Back at the edge, Elly's Koirin pulsed brighter, sending out a wave of healing as a bolt nearly hit Seri—who now clutched a dagger of her own, eyes wide but determined.
Seri: "Why are there so many?!"
Jonax dropped another enemy with precision aim.
Jonax: "To recruit Josh maybe, I won't stop them though."
Josh grunted, turning to Ren.
Josh: "You holding up?"
Ren, his eyes glowing faintly, raised a hand—and Vultherin unleashed a spiral of frostfire, coating several enemies in crackling, frozen flame.
Ren: "Barely."
Josh: "Cool. Let's keep going then."
The tide began to shift.
Rica finally raised her hand.
Rica: "Clear the left! Aether Queen's breath incoming!"
Kristie somersaulted out of the way.
Kristie: "She's charging it—get down!"
A moment later, the Aether Dragon unleashed a divine roar, a beam of condensed starlight arcing across the battlefield, sending several dozen bandits scattering, unconscious or worse.
But the Coalback Ursalord still stood.
That is—until Rica stepped forward again.
Rica: "Final breath, Queen."
The Aether Dragon Queen inhaled. Light coalesced around her snout—and then she unleashed divine fury, cutting through the air like a comet.
The Ursalord didn't even have time to roar. It fell.
Jonax whistled.
Jonax: "Still the Queen."
Rej: "Remind me not to insult your cooking again."
Only breathing now. The scent of scorched leaves. The weight of survival.
Kristie: "Everyone in one piece?"
Josh, panting: "Barely."
Marian: "Where's Lyra?!"
They turned. She stood atop a tree root, completely untouched. Her parasol closed now, eyes twinkling, clapped once like a proud spectator.
Lyra: "I give this performance a solid 9 out of 10. Could use more mid-air flips."
Marian groaned.
Marian: "Next time you're on the front line, I'm sitting out."
Ren narrowed his eyes toward Lyra—then shook the thought. There was no time to doubt an ally mid-battle.
And then—
A horn blew.
Not theirs.
From the woods—more bandits, or worse?
Everyone tightened their stances, weapons raised, panting.
Ren: "Another wave?"
Lyra, adjusting her gloves, finally stepped forward, still smiling.
Lyra: "Looks like we're not done yet..."
