Chapter 16: Sea Serpent, and Egg, and a Mutt

The sun hadn't risen fully, but the house was already stirring.

Boots thudded softly on wooden floors. Bags were packed—rations, bandages, Essentia flasks. Blades were sharpened. Bonds were fed and checked. There was no room for laziness today.

The group gathered outside the Asterra safehouse. The air was cold but charged with purpose.

Rica stood in front, tying her hair up.

Rica: "Today's target is the Cave of Hollow Echoes. Keep your heads. This one's deeper. Older."

Marian double-checked her bond harness, Scruffler curling calmly behind her.

Marian: "Anyone not ready, speak now."

  No one did.

Ren glanced around—Elly, quiet but determined. Kristie bouncing on her heels. Cedy yawning but alert. Iver adjusting his gear beside Josh. Even Lily, usually poised, seemed keyed up.

The girls were different now—sharper. Marian's success had lit something in them.

Still, an unspoken tension lingered. Today, not everyone would come back the same.

  ...

The cave entrance rose before them like a yawning stone beast, moss lining the archway. Cool air billowed out, thick with the scent of wet stone and something... older. Feral.

Rica lit the first torch. Others followed.

  Rica: "Form pairs. Let's move."

  The groups formed naturally:

  Ren, Rica, Jonax and Lily

  Kristie, Cedy, Seri and Elly

Iver, Marian, Rej and Josh acting as rear guard with Drakehound, Hornbeast and Scruffler

Deeper and deeper they went, the light shrinking behind them.

  Then—

  Disaster Strikes

  The air shifted.

A low, guttural howl vibrated through the cave walls. Then—screeches. Dozens.

Cave Hounds swarmed from the shadows—short, jagged-clawed beasts with hungry eyes. Pack hunters.

Ren's blade was out in seconds. Essentia flared. Bonds snarled and fought beside them.

Then came the worst—collapse. A low rumble, then a sudden quake.

  Crack.

The ground beneath Elly and Kristie gave.

  Cedy: "Elly! Kristie!"

Cedy lunged, missed her by inches.

  Ren: "No—ELLY!"

Her scream echoed as she disappeared into the darkness below.

  ...

Elly stirred with a gasp, the air frigid and still.

Her body ached. Her side pulsed with pain. All around her was silence, save for the distant drip... drip... of unseen water.

The torch flickered weakly on the ground beside her, its flame casting long, trembling shadows across the cavern. Obsidian stone reflected her broken form. Before her, a subterranean lake spread—pitch-black, unnaturally smooth, as though the surface itself held breath.

Above, there was no sky. Only endless dark, mirroring her.

  She whispered, barely audible.

  Elly: "...Alone?"

The moment she spoke, the lake stirred.

From its center, ripples spiraled outward—slow, graceful, and deliberate.

A hum rose from the depths. Not sound, but vibration. Like an ancient heart awakening.

  Then—it emerged.

A serpent of silver and pearl, long as a ship, with opalescent fins that shimmered like moonlight on water. Its presence was impossible—sacred, wrong in how right it felt. As if it belonged to a world older than gods.

Its gaze met hers—vast, unblinking, seeing.

Sea Serpent: "You do not run... Yet you tremble."

Elly stumbled to her feet, barely able to stand. Her knife shook in her hand—not raised to strike, but to remind herself she still had it.

  Elly: "I-I'm afraid..."

  A beat. Her voice steadied.

  Elly: "But I'm still here."

The serpent tilted its head, water cascading off its coils like falling stardust.

Sea Serpent: "Then why do you not flee?"

Elly's knees buckled. She dropped, breathing ragged, but her eyes never broke contact.

Elly: "Because I'm tired... of being the one they have to protect. If I can stand—just once—for someone else... I'll try."

The silence returned—but it was no longer empty. It watched her, listened.

Then, from the heart of the lake, a glow rose like the moon breaking surface.

A translucent egg. Inside, a koi-like creature drifted serenely, its scales glowing gold and sapphire. Gentle. Healing. Eternal.

The serpent curled around the offering.

Sea Serpent: "Then let this be your beginning... Flame of Quiet Waters. You will not command it. You will become with it. Let it teach you what strength truly is."

Elly reached out, her hands trembling, and took the egg into her arms.

The moment it touched her chest, warmth spread through her—soft, steady, forgiving.

She collapsed forward, holding it close, sobbing—but not from fear.

  From knowing.

  ...

  Crack.

Dust choked the air. The sound of her scream still rang in your ears.

  Ren: "ELLY!"

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

You dropped to the crumbled edge of the hole, torch in one hand, hand reaching down into blackness—but there was nothing. Just a drop too steep. Too fast.

Cedy was calling her name. Jonax was pacing, wide-eyed.

  Iver: "Ren! Stand back—"

  Ren: "We don't have time!"

You were already tying rope to your waist, checking your blade, teeth gritted.

  Rica: "You're rushing in blind!"

Ren: "Then come with me or move aside—!"

You didn't mean to snap. Not at them. But it was like something inside you cracked the moment Elly and Kristie vanished.

She was quiet. Fragile. But she hadn't let go of your hand that time. And now she was gone.

You descended into the darkness without thinking.

Iver's voice echoed behind you: "Rein. You're not thinking. We don't lose control in the dark."

  ...

Moments later, the Ren broke through the fallen rocks, torches raised.

  Ren: "Elly!"

He rushed forward, dropping to his knees.

  Ren: "Are you—?"

Elly: "I'm okay," she whispered, the egg glowing in her arms. "I... met someone kind."

  ...

Farther down a separate tunnel, Kristie was still standing.

  Or rather—fighting.

She had been separated, but not overwhelmed. Her torch was her blade, and her voice louder than fear.

Kristie: "COME ON THEN! DANCE OR DIE!"

Cave Hounds dropped around her, but she stood her ground, punching, dodging, bruised but laughing.

Then—a snarl. A Warg-Pup, wounded, cornered, but furious.

It lunged. Kristie met it head-on.

Fists against fangs. Blood. Snarls. Grit.

At last, the pup collapsed—exhausted but still alive. Kristie slumped down beside it, panting.

Kristie: "...You're strong. Wanna try something crazy?"

She held out her bloody palm.

The Warg stared—then pressed its forehead against her hand.

  Bonded.

  ...

Rica tended to minor injuries, and Lily paced the perimeter in silence. Iver stood at the entrance of a branching tunnel, torch held high, listening.

A low growl echoed from the dark.

Iver raised a hand to halt the others, then stepped forward.

From the tunnel, slow footsteps emerged—heavy, uneven.

  A figure limped into view.

  Kristie.

Her jacket torn, her arm bleeding from a gash. Dirt smeared her face, but her grin was unmistakable.

And beside her, padding along with a wary huff, was a small Warg-Pup—its black fur streaked with dried blood, one ear torn, eyes glowing with stubborn fire.

Kristie: "Told ya I could handle myself."

Iver blinked. "You fought off a Warg?"

Kristie: "Technically, I adopted him mid-brawl. Fair trade, I think."

Rica moved forward, inspecting her wounds. "You're lucky it didn't tear your throat out."

Kristie: "Pfft. He tried. I respect the effort."

The Warg growled lowly when Rica stepped too close. Kristie raised a finger like a scolding parent.

Kristie: "Snarl, be nice. That's Queen Rica. She outranks you."

  Snarl huffed. Sat.

The others stared—half in awe, half in disbelief.

Cedy whispered, "She bonded... with a Warg-Pup?"

Lily folded her arms, eyeing the beast. "Of course she did."

Kristie flopped down beside the fire, wincing.

Kristie: "He bites. I bite back. We get along."

Snarl laid down at her side, placing his chin on her foot like a dog claiming his human.

  Silence.

Then Marian let out a breath—a tired, half-laugh.

  Marian: "Of course it's you."

Kristie winked. "What can I say? I'm feral."

Iver crouched, placing a hand on the pup's head, watching it carefully.

Iver: "This bond's not going to be easy."

  Kristie: "I don't do easy."

  They exchanged a nod.

And in that quiet moment, the group—battered, shaken, but whole—sat beneath the earth, finding brief rest before the path ahead resumed.

  ...

Later, after the fight was over, Kristie and Elly was found safe—her egg glowing faintly in her hands— Kristie showing of her new Bond, Snarl the Warg Pup. Ren was pacing the corner of the safehouse. Sleepless. Ashamed.

  Rica cornered Ren first.

Rica: "You're our lead blade. That means you keep calm, even when we can't."

Ren didn't look at her. Couldn't.

Ren: "I just... I thought she—"

Rica: "We all thought that. But losing your head doesn't bring people back."

Then Iver joined, folding his arms across his chest.

Iver: "You say you're a tactician. Then act like one. The team mirrors your pulse."

There was no anger in his voice. Just quiet disappointment.

  Ren nodded, swallowing it down.

  Ren: "Understood."

But someone else had been watching from the edge of the room.

  Lily.

She didn't say anything. Not then. But her eyes lingered. Sharp. Knowing.

She had seen the flicker of fear behind your orders. The way your hand had trembled. How your voice had cracked just once when calling Elly's name.

And for the first time, she realized:

You weren't just composed. You were holding yourself together by force of will.

  And tonight—you almost didn't.

  ...

  Night fell as they returned.

Marian eagerly inspected Elly's koi egg under the lanternlight.

Marian: "Aquatic type. Definitely healer-class. You found this down there?"

Elly nodded shyly, still clutching it close.

Rica was already taking notes beside her.

Rica: "Potential regenerative pulses... we need to study its bonding patterns."

Kristie sprawled across the couch, arms bandaged, proudly letting Snarl chew a leftover boot.

Josh: "I swear you both smell like wet dogs."

  Cedy: "Correction: rabid wet dogs."

Kristie: "Y'all are just jealous of my stink."

  Laughter echoed through the room.

Elly sat quietly nearby, her fingers brushing the egg's smooth shell. It pulsed with gentle warmth. For once, she didn't feel like a background shadow.

  ...

The house had finally settled. Ren stepped onto the balcony and found Elly already there, egg glowing softly in her arms.

Elly: "You got scolded...because of me."

Ren: "Don't worry about it, it was my fault for losing composure."

  Elly went silent. Guilt.

  Ren: "You did good today."

Elly smiled faintly, still staring at the moonlit garden.

Elly: "I thought I was going to die."

Ren: "So did we. But you didn't."

Elly: "It... spoke to me. It saw me. Not just someone weak or scared."

She looked down at the egg.

Elly: "Do you really think it chose me because I... was brave?"

Ren: "No. I think it chose you because you were honest. You didn't lie to yourself. And you didn't run."

Elly looked at him, quietly surprised.

  Elly: "Thank you..."

  A pause.

Elly: "Hey... if I fall again, will you still come?"

  Ren: "Every time."

She laughed quietly, wiping a tear.

Elly: "Okay. Then I'll keep going."

  ...

Later that night, Ren remained on the balcony alone.

The wind was gentler now. The stars clear.

He exhaled slowly, hands in his pockets.

Ren: "I thought, I was composed...I thought I prepared myself for this."

  The balcony door opened.

  Lily: "Couldn't sleep either?"

Ren: "Came to scold me too?"

She leaned on the railing beside him.

Lily (grin): "Scold you or comfort you, your choice, though I prefer the latter."

  Ren: "Pity?"

Lily (soft chuckle): "Nah. I don't waste pity on people who still stand."

Ren didn't answer right away. His eyes scanned the stars, as if searching for something too far to name.

Ren: "I made the call to push forward... split up. Took risks I wasn't supposed to. Elly nearly drowned. Kristie almost bled out. And me—"(He clenched his jaw.) "—I lost my cool. I panicked."

Lily leaned her head back, letting the breeze play through her hair.

  Lily: "Yeah. You did."

That stung more than he thought it would. She didn't sugarcoat it.

Lily: "But..."(She turned to him, eyes softer now.)"...you were also the one who rallied everyone, even when they were falling apart. You didn't run from the burden—you carried it, cracked spine and all."

Ren looked at her then, brow furrowed.

  Ren: "Doesn't excuse mistakes."

Lily: "It doesn't. But it means you're human. And... still trying. That matters."

  A long silence.

The wind blew again. A quiet lull between two warriors nursing invisible wounds.

Lily glanced down at her hand, then slowly reached out and flicked his arm with her finger.

Lily: "Besides... you're not the only one being watched."

  Ren: "Huh?"

Lily (smirking): "Iver observes everyone. Rica watches you. Elly looks up to you. Kristie won't admit it, but she does too. Me?"(She shrugged)"I just... notice things. Like how your hands shake after battle, but you hide it in your pockets. Or how you kept glancing at Elly during the firelight—making sure she was okay."

Ren's expression faltered for a beat.

Ren: "...Is that what I look like? Shaking?"

Lily: "Not weakness. Just weight. That's how I know you're still carrying something that matters."

Ren: "And what about you? Why are you here?"

Lily leaned her elbows on the railing, then looked at him sideways, a faint smile on her lips.

Lily: "Maybe I just didn't want you to carry it alone."

Ren stared at her, unsure how to respond to that. The words didn't come.

So they stood in the silence instead.

Two figures beneath the stars—scarred, uncertain, but still trying.

  Still human.

  And together.

Genuine question form the author though, which character is your favorite so far?
