[Internal Memo – Project Directorate]
Author: Dr. Akihiko Kayaba
Position: Project Director – SAO Project
Date: May 19, 2021
Restricted distribution: AI / PandR / Graphics & Environment
The Cardinal system continues to operate within optimal parameters. Integration of the new indirect light distribution module has been completed. Behavioral AI for NPCs in small populations is showing stable improvements. I have reviewed the consolidated QA reports for the month of April. Overall, progress aligns with the extended schedule. However, a concerning trend persists: most testers remain focused solely on functional mechanics. This project is not meant only to function. It must feel alive.

Clipping incidents have decreased. Mob pathfinding behaves as expected. State transition errors have been resolved. Despite this, the feedback remains insufficient. Most testers observe the system only to find faults. But they do not observe the world. This severely limits their usefulness to the full vision of the project.
I've paid particular attention to the reports from Tester #100, submitted during the prior phase. After a more detailed analysis, I have determined that their contribution differs from every other participant in the program. They do not limit themselves to describing mechanical errors. They do not interact with Aincrad as a game. They contemplate it as a real environment. Tester #100 is the only person who has identified details aligned with the original goals of the SAO project: coherence between light and atmosphere, emotional authenticity in NPCs, environmental organicity beyond mechanical utility. This is not a coincidence. It is the first time an external observer has perceived Aincrad as it was conceived. Upon reading their comments, I confirmed something I had suspected: the world is functional, but it is not yet believable. And their reports point precisely to the places where that believability fractures.
I have ordered the environment team to prioritize integration of the extended atmospheric model; the Shaders department to review specular behavior on metallic surfaces; PandR to analyze emotional interaction patterns between NPCs under ambient lighting; and AI to implement context-reactive micro-expressions. These tasks were not scheduled for this stage of the project, but Tester #100's observations have shown that they must be moved forward. I do not want a world with perfect mechanics. I want a world where even its flaws feel like part of its nature. One that is observed through the right eyes.
Most testers perform their role as operators. They identify failures. They see functions. But Tester #100... saw something else. When I read their reports, for the first time since this project began, I was able to confirm that Aincrad can move someone. That it can provoke something real. They looked at the sunrise of a world shaped by my hands and paused to describe it as if it truly existed. That perspective is invaluable. Tester #100 is essential for the next stages of the project. From now on, their presence will be prioritized.
