Chapter 36 - Heat Without Fire

  The morning began normally.

Or at least, that was what it tried to look like.

The sky was clear. The wind, mild. Students moved through Kuoh Academy surrounded by distracted laughter, tired teachers, and trivial conversations that filled the hallways like every other day.

  And yet, something felt wrong.

A gentle warmth—too even to be natural—spread across the campus. It wasn’t stifling. It wasn’t uncomfortable.

  But it lingered. Persistent.

As if the sun had decided to draw just a little closer than it should.

“Doesn’t it feel hotter than yesterday?”

  “Maybe the humidity went up.”

  “Probably just the weather…”

No one paid it much attention.

The main gates of Kuoh Academy opened with a soft metallic click.

  The air changed.

Not violently. Not like an explosion.

It was more like a tilt.

As if the environment itself had decided to pay attention.

  Riser Phenex crossed the threshold.

Impeccable. Elegant. Blonde hair that seemed to reflect light even in shadow. His smile was subtle, restrained—like someone who never had to try to be interesting.

  He didn’t walk fast.

He didn’t look around with curiosity.

He moved like someone who had already decided he belonged there.

Students slowed their steps without realizing it.

  “Who is that guy…?”

“Is he a foreign exchange student?”

  “He’s… way too perfect…”

Even some teachers stiffened, though they couldn’t explain why.

A female teacher approached, maintaining her composure.

“Excuse me,” she said. “Do you need help finding your way around?”

  Riser smiled.

“Thank you. I’m fine,” he replied calmly. “I was just… observing.”

  There were no follow-up questions.

Not because the answer was convincing—but because no one felt they could question him.

Kuoh was already reacting to him.

Issei stepped out of a classroom, yawning, his bag slung over one shoulder, thinking about lunch—until he saw him.

  He stopped dead.

Riser. Standing in the middle of the hallway. Looking straight at him.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

A red spark flashed through Issei’s eyes. Instinctive. Animal.

The Boosted Gear reacted before his mind could catch up.

  Riser tilted his head, amused.

“Hyoudou Issei,” he said softly. “It’s a pleasure to see you awake.”

  Issei swallowed.

“What… what are you doing here?”

“Curiosity,” Riser answered. “And a bit of sightseeing.”

Kiba appeared almost instantly, positioning himself between them with practiced ease.

“Hyoudou,” he said calmly. “Let’s go back to the club.”

  Issei didn’t look away.

  Neither did Riser.

  Two presences measuring each other—

but only one of them was enjoying it.

  Finally, Riser turned away.

“We’ll meet again soon,” he added lightly. “Kuoh is… interesting.”

Issei clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white.

Kaelan was sitting on one of the outdoor benches, closing a pencil case.

The day had been normal. Too normal.

And yet, his Resonance had been restless for hours.

  It wasn’t screaming.

  It wasn’t pushing.

  But it was awake.

  Then the air shifted.

A gentle heat brushed the back of his neck.

  Kaelan looked up.

Riser Phenex stood only a few meters away.

It was the second time they’d met.

There was no one nearby. And yet the space between them felt compressed, as if the environment itself had shrunk to accommodate their conversation.

  The Resonance surged sharply.

  Kaelan held it back.

  “Phenex-san…” he said carefully.

  Riser smiled.

“Arverth. We keep crossing paths too often for it to be coincidence.”

  Kaelan stood.

“I didn’t expect you to come to Kuoh so soon.”

“When something appears outside the pattern,” Riser replied, “I prefer to observe it up close.”

A group of human students passed nearby, laughing, subtly drawn to his presence without understanding why.

  Riser ignored them.

  His eyes never left Kaelan.

“Your aura is… different,” he noted. “More tense.”

  Kaelan swallowed.

  “I’m working on it.”

“I can tell,” Riser said, inclining his head slightly. “That tremor isn’t fear. It’s response.”

  Kaelan clenched his jaw.

  “It doesn’t mean anything.”

“Reactions always mean something,” Riser replied. “Even when we don’t want to admit it.”

  Kaelan took a step back.

  “What do you want?”

Riser studied him like a piece that didn’t quite fit the board.

“To understand you,” he said plainly. “Variables without clear origin generate errors.”

  Kaelan felt his stomach tighten.

  “I’m not a variable.”

  Riser smiled—just a little.

  “Not yet.”

He turned and walked away without another word.

Kaelan felt the Resonance try to follow him.

  He stopped it.

  Barely.

Inside the Occult Research Club building, Rias stood by the window, fists clenched.

Akeno stood behind her in silence.

  Kiba closed the door carefully.

Koneko chewed on a cookie—too hard.

“Did you see him?” Kiba asked.

  “Yes,” Rias replied.

  Akeno sighed.

“Riser Phenex walking through Kuoh like he owns the place.”

  “Annoying,” Koneko muttered.

“And he spoke with Arverth,” Kiba added.

  Rias lowered her gaze.

“I don’t want Sona to think this is weakness,” she whispered.

Akeno placed a hand on her back.

  “It’s not. It’s external pressure.”

Rias closed her eyes, breathing deeply.

In the Student Council office, Sona Sitri was also looking out the window.

  Her expression was unreadable.

  Tsubaki entered.

  “President… Phenex is on campus.”

“I know,” Sona replied. “And he’s already made contact with Arverth.”

  Tsubaki straightened.

  “Should we intervene?”

“No,” Sona said. “Rias must handle Phenex.”

  She paused.

“But Arverth must not be exposed.”

The blue seal on her hand vibrated faintly.

  “Not yet.”

Riser left Kuoh’s grounds at an unhurried pace.

The afternoon sun illuminated his hair like liquid fire.

  “Interesting…” he murmured.

  He wasn’t thinking about Issei.

  He was thinking about Kaelan.

  About that involuntary vibration.

  That response without invocation.

That Resonance that didn’t seem to belong to any known system.

  He smiled.

“Next time,” he thought, “I’ll observe more carefully.”

  And Kuoh was left behind.

  Hotter.

  More restless.

And carrying a tension that would not dissipate anytime soon.
