Chopter 43 - When Knowing Isn’t Enough

Kaelan woke up before the world needed him.

His body didn’t react with panic.

  There was no gasp.

  No immediate trembling.

Only a heavy certainty, settled deep in his bones.

  Again.

He sat on the bed and rested his elbows on his knees.

  “Alright…” he murmured. “Alright.”

  There was no surprise.

  There was calculation.

The Resonance vibrated low and steady, like an engine idling.

If they won’t listen… then I’ll move them.

Operations room — A different Kaelan.

  He entered without hesitation.

  Without doubt.

Sona hadn’t arrived yet, but Tsubaki was already reviewing the seals.

Reya was adjusting her detection field.

  Momo spoke quietly with Yura.

  Kaelan didn’t greet anyone.

  He went straight to Tsubaki.

“Perimeter B is going to fail today.”

  Tsubaki looked up sharply.

  “What?”

  Reya frowned.

  “Based on what?”

  Kaelan replied without emotion.

  “Accumulated probability.”

  It wasn’t a lie.

It also wasn’t the whole truth.

“I want it reinforced,” he continued. “Now.”

  An uncomfortable silence followed.

  Momo glanced at Yura.

“Since when do we issue cross-orders?”

Before Kaelan could answer, Sona entered.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

  The scene froze.

  “What’s going on?” she asked.

  Kaelan turned toward her.

“I need to change the territory’s disposition.”

Sona studied him with cold attention.

“Do you need to, or do you want to?”

  “I need to.”

  “Explain.”

  Kaelan took a deep breath.

  Don’t tell them everything.

  Not yet.

“There’s a pattern of minor errors,” he said. “Poorly closed rituals. Overflowing emotions. Today the flow is more unstable than usual.”

  That… was true.

  Sona crossed her arms.

“And since when do you analyze territorial flow at this level?”

  Kaelan held her gaze.

  “Since I almost died underground.”

A tense silence fell over the room.

  Tsubaki spoke carefully.

  “President… maybe we could—”

“No,” Sona cut in. “We’ll maintain the original plan.”

  Something cracked inside Kaelan.

“Then I’ll act on my own.”

  The words hit heavy.

Saji let out an incredulous laugh.

  “Excuse me?”

  Sona narrowed her eyes.

  “That wasn’t a suggestion, Arverth.”

  “I know.”

  “Then leave.”

  Kaelan didn’t argue.

  He turned away.

But before exiting, he said something he shouldn’t have.

“When it starts… it won’t matter who was right.”

  The door closed.

And for the first time, Sona felt something uncomfortable.

  Not fear.

  Uncertainty.

Before the chaos — Forcing the error.

  Kaelan didn’t patrol.

  He searched.

He went underground before anyone could order him not to.

He knew he was breaking rules.

He knew he was altering the canon.

But he also knew something worse:

If the ritual doesn’t appear… I’ll push until it does.

  The Resonance burned.

Every human emotion was a nail.

  Student fear.

  Envy.

  Jealousy.

  Contained anger.

  A desire for power.

  There.

  A group of students.

  Not demons.

  Humans.

  An incomplete circle.

Kaelan appeared before them like a shadow.

  “Close it,” he ordered.

  One of them stepped back.

  “Who are you?”

  Kaelan looked at the circle.

  Poorly drawn.

  Dangerous.

  Harmless… on its own.

“If you continue,” he said, “someone will die today.”

  They laughed.

  That was their mistake.

  Kaelan activated his aura.

  Not to attack.

  To show.

  The emotional pressure crushed them.

  They fell to their knees.

  “W-What are you?!” one screamed.

  Kaelan trembled.

  I shouldn’t be doing this.

  “Close. The. Circle.”

  They obeyed.

When he left, the Resonance screamed.

  Not approval.

  Reproach.

  You’re pushing.

  The Dragon — Worse. Faster.

  The sky broke earlier.

  There was no warning.

  No slow buildup.

Kaelan felt a brutal pull in his chest.

  “No… not now…”

  Reya shouted over the channel.

“MAJOR ANOMALY! IT’S NOT FORMING—IT’S ALREADY HERE!”

  Kaelan ran.

  Faster than before.

  More desperate.

  The dragon emerged fully formed.

  The city had no time.

And this time, Kaelan knew something horrific:

  I helped accelerate this.

  Combat — Dying with guilt

  He fought anyway.

  Like a condemned man.

  He buffed.

  He shouted orders.

He pushed his body beyond its limit.

The Resonance spiraled out of control.

  He felt the amplified panic.

  And the dragon… responded.

  Not to the city.

  To him.

  “I provoked it…” Kaelan gasped. “I provoked it…”

One by one, they fell again.

When the claw descended, Kaelan didn’t think about saving anyone.

  He thought:

  I’m making it worse.

  He died with that certainty.

  Return — Worse than before.

  He woke up.

  Again.

  The same ceiling.

  The same day.

  But now something had changed.

  The Resonance wasn’t neutral.

  It was hurting.

As if the world itself had drawn an invisible line.

Kaelan covered his face with his hands.

And for the first time since it all began…

  He cried.

“I can’t force it…” he whispered. “If I push, it breaks worse.”

  He breathed deeply.

  Shaking.

“So… what the hell do I do?”

  The countdown continued.

But now he knew something terrifying:

  Acting isn’t enough.

  Knowing isn’t enough.

Every decision can also be the mistake.
