Creak ~ The call ended.
Yvienne lifted her head, took a deep breath, and continued gazing toward the laboratory.
There, Seraphine stood motionless, deep in thought.
Once upon a time, Seraphine, too, had been curious about the genes within her own body.
After her soul and physical attributes had expanded to such an overwhelming degree, had her genes also diverged entirely from those of ordinary humans?
If her complete genome were extracted and used to create another "Seraphine," would that clone also inherit her extraordinary capabilities?
Driven by this question, Seraphine had once embarked on a deep and meticulous study of the subject.
She manipulated her own body, autonomously severing a single strand of hair.
Then, with her immense telekinetic power, she crushed that strand, far tougher than Ether-Crystalline Carbyne tubules, into nano-scale fragments.
From those microscopic remnants, she painstakingly extracted her full genetic sequence.
Upon analyzing it in depth, Seraphine came to a startling discovery.
Her genes were, in truth, not so fundamentally different from those of normal humans.
In theory, a clone created from that genetic material would not possess her current, absurdly enhanced attributes.
In fact, the clone's strength might barely surpass that of a Mystic Aperture Martial Artist.
This baffling discovery left Seraphine deeply unsettled.
It wasn’t until she had absorbed vast amounts of biological knowledge, and conducted more advanced research into the nature of life and genetics, that Seraphine finally understood:
She, too, had fallen into a common misconception.
She had been misled by the fallacy known as 【Genetic Determinism】.
Based on her research, it turns out that genes alone cannot fully account for the abilities and attributes Seraphine possesses.
Vital Energy, Aether, Divine Aura, Eye of True Revelation, none of these could be encoded or expressed by her genome.
Moreover, through countless experiments, Seraphine uncovered a startling truth:
Some rare superpowers, at their core, very likely do not originate from genes at all.
Instead, their true source seems to lie within the soul.
After repeatedly using her abilities, perceiving and influencing the mental and spiritual structures of others, Seraphine discovered another revelation:
The information density of the soul appears to surpass even that of the physical body.
Following this line of reasoning, many superpowers found in superpower users, especially those that do not manifest through physical abnormalities or altered organs, such as precognition, curses, telepathy, phasing, spiritual possession, instant teleportation, or force-field manipulation, these may all originate from the deep recesses of the soul, not the genome itself.
The so-called superpower gene may simply be the material-world reflection of a power that exists beyond matter: a symbol, not the source.
It is not the true essence.
Of course, in the majority of ordinary superpowers, the root cause does appear to lie deep within genetic code.
However, even when the same superpower gene is implanted in two different individuals, the resulting ability, the way it manifests, and its strength, often differs significantly.
This variation, too, is very likely linked to the soul.
In her previous life, Seraphine had been just like countless others: a cloud reader of 《The Selfish Gene》.
She never actually read the book in full.
Instead, drawn by the word “selfish,” she had carelessly assumed that humans were nothing more than slaves to their genes.
Or perhaps, at that time, she had simply taken it for granted that human nature, talent, and potential were all determined by the genes within the body.
But in truth, that belief was a deep and fundamental misunderstanding.
Based on her current research, throughout the entire natural world, not limited to humans, whether it's cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, flies, mosquitoes, tigers, lions, or even bacteria and viruses… the situation is the same.
At a fundamental level, the traits of all living organisms on Earth are not entirely determined by the genes within their bodies.
Genes do not control organisms.
A creature’s talent, ability, and characteristics are, in truth, shaped through a complex interplay between its own inherent traits, its personal experiences, its surrounding environment, and a multitude of random variables.
The actual influence of genes is surprisingly limited.
In the same way, many different factors can lead to the development and transformation of an organism’s traits.
Genes are merely one of those factors.
Other contributors include biological macromolecules, environmental conditions, stochastic events, all of which can shape or shift an organism’s characteristics.
Consider this, beginning from the very concept of “manipulation”:
If the manipulated party can modify, utilize, or even abandon the so-called manipulator, then what kind of “manipulation” is that, really?
And yet, the body’s own cells, those allegedly passive subjects can, through various mechanisms such as transcription factors, second messenger systems, or epigenetic modifications, alter their own gene expression.
They can even change the gene sequences themselves via DNA strand break repair systems.
To put it bluntly, with the level of Gene Technology Seraphine currently possesses, she can easily modify, manipulate, or even eliminate multiple gene segments within a living organism, whether from humans or other species.
And based on what she knows, many microorganisms in nature can even absorb genetic material from other organisms, or from the dead, and incorporate it into their own cells.
Take Bdelloidea, for example, this bizarre species is capable of digesting other organisms, extracting their genes, and integrating them into its own genome to function as part of its biology.
Even more striking, living beings can, whether intentionally or not, choose not to reproduce for their entire lives.
They can even commit suicide.
And genes? They possess no mechanism whatsoever to prevent this.
Therefore, genes have never been the blueprint of life: only a toolkit for cells.
Even fundamental information such as how the human body's organs should be arranged cannot be directly found in the human genome.
Humans are not assembled by cells following the rigid instructions of genes.
Rather, cells interpret and select what they need from within the genes based on internal and external environmental conditions.
They interact with their surroundings, constantly reshaping and transforming according to context.
This adaptive behavior becomes even more evident in the case of cancer cells.
Hence, the definition of life should be: 【Information shaped by natural selection】.
Not the pitiful image of life as mere slaves dictated by genes.
Genes, as carriers of heredity, are in essence informational constructs.
Their most crucial trait is not control, but continuity: the stable passage of information through time.
In fact, even genes themselves are not a prerequisite for life.
If we zoom out, take a broader view of this vast and varied universe:
We might say: anything that can self-replicate and evolve through natural selection qualifies as life.
Be it a replicating macromolecule that lacks DNA structure,
Or even a computer program; it, too, may meet the criteria for life.
For instance, there's a type of cellular automaton used to simulate the evolutionary behavior of complex spatiotemporal systems.
This automaton functions as a dynamic model, and it, too, could be considered a form of life.
Thoughts flowed.
Seraphine’s mind drifted toward the Aurora Clan.
“However,” she mused, “the Aurora Clan is... different. The core genome of this ancient species is almost unnaturally stable:
So rigid that even removing a tiny segment causes their entire genetic structure to collapse and unravel. It’s as if their genes were embedded with anti-decryption protocols on purpose.
And those superpower components coiled around their gene chains...
They don’t resemble any kind of naturally evolved structure. The regularity of their sequences, the rule-bound patterns... they reek of design. A deliberately engineered architecture.”
A divine glimmer flickered in Seraphine’s eyes as she contemplated, murmuring under her breath:
“If we follow this line of reasoning:
Then the Aurora Clan was likely created in the ancient past, by some superior entity… or an ultra-advanced civilization. But who could it have been? A more ancient, forgotten race? Or perhaps... something extraterrestrial?”
With a mere flicker of intent, the Eye of True Revelation surged to life once more.
But perhaps because the clues were far too scarce, and the truth had been buried under too much time:
Even after a long while, Seraphine still couldn’t deduce anything truly meaningful or valuable.
"Very well."
She lightly shook her head, cutting off the spiral of useless speculation.
For now, she set aside all the doubts and theories regarding the creators of the Aurora Clan.
Because, at this moment, such questions held little practical significance.
Continuing to dwell on them would only waste her mental power.
Instead, Seraphine began shifting her focus toward something much more relevant to herself.
Something far more pressing.
For example… the System.
What underlying principle enables the System's exponential doubling of attributes?
And the System itself:
What exactly is it?
Seraphine had spent a great deal of time seriously pondering this question.
For an expert:
What is their most important core?
In truth, the answer is surprisingly simple.
It is not genes or talent.
Those are nothing more than blurry sketches, barely capable of representing even one ten-thousandth of an expert’s true essence.
And certainly not the truth.
A true expert:
Their strength lies in their spirit, will, thoughts, skills, experience, physique, and brain,
As well as certain things beyond logic: mysterious, intangible forces that cannot be measured or researched.
And in many cases, those beyond-logic elements are even more important than all the rest.
Because if hard work alone truly determined outcome:
Then the rigid class hierarchies of human society would never have formed.
Many of the world’s deepest inequalities would not exist.
The world would, without doubt, be just and unified.
But reality shows that the so-called “heaven rewards the diligent”:
Is little more than a cruel joke.
Opportunity and fate are critical.
So critical, in fact, that they can completely rewrite a person’s life.
Take, for instance, the 【Infinite Attributes】 System buried deep within Seraphine’s soul:
It is her greatest and most transformative opportunity.
In truth, Seraphine had always carried a hidden concern.
A quiet, lingering fear.
That as her physical attributes increased:
Would her body weight and density also continue to rise without limit?
It is necessary to understand this:
Although the strength of macroscopic objects in nature doesn't have a strictly linear or direct correlation with their density or mass once that strength reaches a certain threshold, the density and mass of the object will inevitably undergo drastic transformation.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
The so-called strength of an object, when manifested physically, is essentially the amount of binding energy contained within it.
And what is binding energy?
It refers to the energy required when a larger object is assembled from many smaller constituents.
There must be mutual attractive forces among all the components, forces that hold them together in a tightly bound structure.
If one wants to separate those components:
That is, to destroy the object in the conventional sense:
A corresponding amount of energy must be applied to overcome those attractive forces.
In other words, work must be done.
The amount of work required to disassemble the object provides a clear measure of how tightly its components are bound together.
That measurement is the object’s binding energy.
Different materials possess different degrees of binding energy. And if we zoom in to the microscopic scale:
We find that:
Between free atoms forming molecules lies chemical binding energy.
Between protons and neutrons in an atomic nucleus lies nuclear binding energy.
The larger the binding energy, the more stable the structure, whether molecular, atomic, or nuclear.
In the macroscopic world, this stability is expressed as hardness, or exceptionally high strength.
Moreover, the binding energy between particles is intrinsically linked to the mass of a substance.
So, in a certain sense:
Increasing an object’s strength will almost always cause an increase in its mass.
And if the object’s volume remains constant, then its density must increase accordingly.
However.
Through analyzing that crushed strand of hair, Seraphine made a shocking discovery:
The fundamental makeup of her body had not changed in the slightest.
Her composition was still that of a normal carbon-based life form, made up of familiar cellular tissues, standard molecules, and atoms.
She had not transformed into some exotic state of matter like that of a neutron star, which radiates extreme heat and intense magnetic fields.
She was not a humanoid neutron star.
She remained, outwardly at least, a perfectly ordinary carbon-based organism.
Whether in terms of mass, density, or even down to the microscopic structure...
The radius of particles, atomic mass, ionization energy, electron affinity, atomic spectral wavelengths, radioactivity, electronegativity, spin, magnetic moment, charge...
All the measurable values that make up Seraphine’s body, inside and out, remain, at least on paper, completely normal.
And yet.
The strength of every particle composing her body, in terms of Manifestation, has somehow swollen by an unfathomable factor: billions of times over.
This isn't merely the effect of increased binding energy, nor is it the enhanced residue of Ether brought on by cultivation.
It’s something deeper.
Something far more mysterious.
Through atomic-level probing using her mental power, and ongoing microscopic-scale research.
Seraphine has determined that this inexplicable explosion in her physical attribute values must be occurring at the subatomic level and perhaps even deeper, in realms smaller than current science can observe.
If one were to speculate from the most extreme perspective.
This transformation may very well be occurring at the Planck scale, within the very foundation of reality itself.
Suddenly, Seraphine’s brow furrowed. She murmured softly:
“No... it’s not the particles.”
The strength of her body can’t be fully explained by physical matter alone.
The doubling, the skyrocketing of her system's attribute values.
Feels less like a process, and more like an effect.
A result that appears directly in reality, without cause, without transition.
A consequence without origin.
Her overwhelming physical body and even the soul dwelling within it are merely materialized reflections of this dominant, logic-defying result without cause.
Which is exactly why this bizarre contradiction has emerged:
Seraphine’s physical strength now rivals, perhaps even exceeds, that of a neutron star.
Yet her body’s internal structure remains nothing more than flesh and blood.
This phenomenon.
Blatantly violating the Law of Conservation of Mass, and defying the fundamental laws of the universe.
Is proof that Seraphine herself has become nothing short of a blazing anomaly.
A glaring, ever-present bug in the fabric of physics.
If the universe truly possessed a will.
It would be furious. Maddened beyond reason.
If she truly had to offer a comparable example, it would be the conjecture she had previously deduced:
【The essence of Ether is phenomenon】.
Her own system might be similar to Ether in this regard.
A type of extraordinary phenomenon that transcends matter, energy, and information alike.
It is the 【Infinite Attributes】 system, capable of arbitrarily bending and rewriting the fundamental rules of reality, including its operating logic at the most foundational level.
Only through this was the current Seraphine able to come into being.
Fortunately, the original work world-building had never introduced a concept like a will or free consciousness behind the universe itself.
If it had.
Then the list of enemies Seraphine had to be wary of, beyond just the Shadow of the Unreal, would have increased by one more formidable force.
She considered this for a moment.
Then her thoughts naturally returned to the present.
Her mind refocused.
Seraphine lowered her gaze toward Selene, who lay on the operating table, a mangled half-body, her fate still uncertain.
Next, Seraphine’s eyes drifted over Selene’s shattered, ruined form, and looked forward.
All around her stood arrays of cutting-edge medical devices:
Electrocardiographs, electroencephalographs, biochemical analyzers, automated drug injectors, ultrasonic detoxifiers, hemodialysis machines, and more.
And beside each of these instruments stood a cold, expressionless figure: each one a Seraphine clone.
No one in the current medical world was truly qualified to assist her in this extremely complex and dangerous reconstructive surgery.
No one, except herself.
And so, Seraphine chose to create a team of clones, each telepathically connected, each capable of coordinating perfectly, to assist her.
Meanwhile, farther from the surgical table, a number of tall glass storage cabinets lined the walls.
Through the clear panels, one could vaguely make out bundles of wiring, high-precision mechanical components, silver fiber-optic strands, and crystalline skeletal materials, all meticulously categorized and stored.
Even farther out, beyond the double-layered glass windows of the lab, stood over a dozen scientists of varying ages, their expressions solemn.
Though they wore grim, detached looks, the flicker in their eyes betrayed a different emotion:
Elation.
It was clear: they, too, were eagerly anticipating this historic reconstructive procedure.
Behind and around them, massive, intricate instruments filled the observation chamber,
Even more advanced and colossal than those inside the lab.
Each of the machines had several thick, heavy-duty cables snaking out from them, piercing through the lab walls and connecting directly into the central systems.
Seraphine swept her gaze across the room.
By now, the pristine white floor of the laboratory had already been overtaken, more than half of it, by a dense web of wires, conduits, and interface connectors.
Nearly half of these were already linked to the broken and battered body of Selene, lying on the operating table.
The other half remained idle nearby,
Waiting for Seraphine’s command at any moment.
At that moment, Serena approached her and whispered softly, “Your Highness, all systems and materials are ready. Shall we begin the operation?”
Seraphine gave a calm nod. “Begin.”
Serena exhaled slowly, then nervously picked up the walkie-talkie and spoke into it in a quiet voice:
“【Titanium Soulform】 large-scale reconstructive surgery, commencing now.”
Outside the lab, a flurry of activity began. The scientists at the rear stations immediately activated the machinery.
In an instant, the instruments roared to life with a synchronized hum.
Everyone moved into motion.
“Initiating micro-robot injection.”
“Injecting superpower components:
【Metallic Simulation Type】
【Heterogeneous Fusion】
【High-Pressure Energy Storage】
【Rapid Self-Healing】
【Metallic Growth】
【Electric Body Constitution】
Commencing core gene implantation protocol.”
“Implanting superconductive Thunder Veins.”
“Implanting ether muscle fibers.”
“Excising compromised skeletal structure.”
“Replacing with Carbyne spirit bones.”
“Removing necrotic internal organs.”
“Installing artificial hybrid electric organs.”
“Integrating electronic sub-brain plug-ins.”
“Implanting micro-fission reactors.”
...
SWISH SWISH SWISH SWISH ~
Hundreds, no, thousands, of surgical tools, both simple and sophisticated,
whirled through the air.
All were guided with pinpoint precision by Seraphine’s delicate and refined telekinetic force,
dancing tirelessly around Selene’s incomplete body.
For a moment, the laboratory filled with flashes of silver light,
and the sharp tearing sound of wind never ceased.
Seraphine lowered her gaze to the girl’s twisted, mangled metallic skin and sighed.
“Even now… you’re still instinctively channeling your Metalization superpower at full capacity.”
She closed her eyes briefly, attuning her senses to the unconscious girl’s soul and mind,
buried in slumber, yet radiating an overwhelming storm of emotion.
Softly, she whispered:
“An astonishing will to survive… even your soul is burning.”
“Once the will to live collapses, it transforms, into fury, into flame… like molten lava erupting from within.”
She leaned in, voice like a murmur carried on breath:
“I can feel it… your rage, your despair, Selene.”
“I will save you. But from this moment forward… your soul, your will, your body, everything you are, belongs to me.”
“Do you… accept this?”
Selene’s incomplete, motionless body, eyes shut tight, suddenly shuddered violently.
From within her broken, dimming, nearly shattered consciousness,
a fragmented signal rippled through the silence:
“I… Am… Will…ing…”
Seraphine’s lips curved into a cold, merciless smile.
“Excellent.”
“Then from this day forward, you are the blade in my hand.”
“To me, you owe absolute, unwavering loyalty unto death.”
“Don’t know who your enemies are? That’s fine, I do.”
“Don’t have the power for revenge? That’s fine, I’ll give it to you.”
Her eyes gleamed.
“Show me, Selene, how far your hatred and fury can drive this body!”
...
Even with Seraphine’s inhuman efficiency, the procedure was maddeningly complex.
The reconstruction took nearly five or six hours: Not until the sun crested the horizon and bathed the lab in pale dawnlight did the surgery finally come to a close.
Only then did Seraphine allow herself a moment to glance at her newly updated interface:
【Host: Seraphine】
【Physical Strength: 1.2 trillion】
【Soul: 1.2 trillion】
Two days had passed.
And once again, Seraphine’s stats had quadrupled.
Suddenly breaking through the trillion mark.
Snapping back to awareness, Seraphine turned her gaze toward the operating table in front of her.
Selene, lying upon it, had undergone a complete transformation.
Her once short, loli-like figure had now become that of a tall, slender, and perfectly proportioned young woman, standing at approximately 1.85 meters.
At a glance, aside from the intricate, geometric metallic markings etched across large portions of her skin, and a few exposed silver mechanical components visible on the surface:
She looked almost indistinguishable from an ordinary human.
But Seraphine knew better.
After the reconstruction, less than 10% of Selene’s original biological structure remained.
Even her brain had been partially Cyberized.
And yet, that remaining fraction of flesh and blood was vitally important:
It served as the core foundation for many of Selene’s superpowers.
Her new body had been entirely rebuilt using Titan Crystal muscle.
The so-called Titan Crystal muscle was created by artificially stretching the elemental substance Ether-Crystalline Titanium into ultra-thin filaments.
These filaments were then twisted together, strand by strand, into muscle-like bundles.
From there, the bundles were grouped and grown into metallic muscle clusters.
Finally, those clusters were woven into dense layers and surgically integrated into various parts of Selene’s body.
These Titan Crystal muscles contained no blood.
Instead, they expanded and contracted using constantly surging high-voltage electric currents:
Capable of granting Selene over 10,000 tons of raw force.
The same advanced filamentous material was also woven into a flexible Ether-Crystalline inner skin layer, replacing her previously fragile carbon-based skin.
Furthermore, every one of Selene’s bones had been replaced with an ultra-durable artificial skeleton:
Crafted primarily from Ether-Crystalline Carbyne.
Between the muscle fibers and the skeleton lay a dense network of superconducting power lines, as thin as strands of cow hair, running throughout her entire body.
These superconducting lines carried massive quantities of electrical energy across her system without any loss.
They were made from the only known room-temperature superconducting material ever discovered and synthesized:
Ether-Crystalline Hydrated Lanthanum, a product of Seraphine’s own groundbreaking research.
In a very real sense:
These Hydrated Lanthanum superconducting lines had become Selene’s blood vessels, and the surging high-voltage current flowing through them: her blood.
And finally:
Housed deep within Selene’s chest was Seraphine’s masterpiece: a micro-fission reactor, researched, developed, and constructed by her own hands.
Its fuel: compressed Ether-Crystalline Uranium.
This exotic high-energy material, also discovered and engineered by Seraphine, delivered an energy output of staggering magnitude.
As a final touch:
Seraphine had also embedded six types of superpower modules, each carefully selected for their compatibility with Selene.
...
【Metallic Simulation Type】: Generates flexible metal within the body that can mimic the outer layer of organic skin, or simulate melee weapons and other simple metal components.
The skin-toned layer covering the silver Ether-Crystalline frame of Selene was produced using this Metallic Simulation ability.
【Rapid Self-Healing】: Cannot regenerate severed limbs, but any recurring injury can be instantly repaired. More importantly, it grants Selene an incredibly dense life force.
This allows her metal muscles and metal skin to recover swiftly and efficiently.
【Metallic Growth】: Grants metal properties akin to living matter, capable of becoming active. As long as there is sufficient material and energy, it can continuously divide and expand like a fungal lifeform. This process synergizes with both self-healing and mimicry-based abilities.
【Electric Body Constitution】: Treats electric current as blood, allowing Selene to perfectly withstand and channel the violent surges of electricity coursing through her system.
【High-Pressure Energy Storage】: Every limb, muscle, and organ functions as a capacitor, capable of storing and circulating high-voltage current.
These four abilities form the foundation of Selene's superpower framework, which is perfectly aligned with her current Titanium Soulform.
Compared to the Sacred Society, which at present can only manage the integration of a single superpower component into its experimental subjects:
Seraphine, after acquiring their base technology, shattered that limitation.
Using it as a foundation, and relying on her unparalleled scientific brilliance, she quickly bypassed the technical bottlenecks.
At the same time, Seraphine speculated on the origin of this component-fusion technology:
It was most likely reverse-engineered by the Sacred Society from the Abraham Machine, a device designed specifically to arm the organization’s base-level combat personnel.
Judging by the Hexagram, beings vastly superior in strength and diversity compared to typical superpower users:
It’s clear that the higher ranks of that organization are multi-ability users as well.
They are likely subjected to extensive genetic modifications:
Or even direct alterations performed by Abraham itself.
After mastering the basics of this technology, Seraphine pushed the concept even further.
She designed an original superpower framework capable of integrating multiple ability modules.
This framework is built around the most crucial component found in the Vuron gene library:
【Heterogeneous Fusion】.
This component serves as the core, allowing the integration of diverse superpowers:
Enabling multidimensional, multi-layered breakthroughs, and dramatically increasing overall power levels.
【Heterogeneous Fusion】: Allows the seamless breakdown of boundaries between inorganic metals and organic biological tissue.
Seraphine theorized that Vuron relied on this very component to integrate dozens of superpower modules:
Layering and amplifying their effects until it could manifest the Aurora Art:
Thundersteel Tyrant Body.
From mere flesh and blood, Vuron ascended:
Becoming a high-energy, plasma-state lifeform.
【Heterogeneous Fusion】 is truly extraordinary.
It acts as a harmonizer, perfectly merging other superpower components into a cohesive and self-reinforcing system, a complete superpower framework.
However, with Seraphine’s current technological capabilities:
She is still unable to fully replicate Vuron’s scale and intensity of effects.
Therefore, for the sake of stability, she limited Selene’s framework to just six superpower components.
Even so:
Selene’s combat potential was instantly elevated to a level that completely surpassed the terrifying Velos.
And in time:
Through training and adaptation, Selene will fully evolve under the 【Titanium Soulform】 framework:
Not as a mere cyborg, but as a true metallic mechanical lifeform.
As her transformation progresses:
Every one of her cells will gradually undergo metallic conversion and mechanical integration.
All the mechanical components, large and small, currently embedded in her body,
including her artificial organs, brain plugins, and other augmentations:
Along with the vast arsenal of concealed weaponry hidden beneath her layers of flexible metallic skin:
Will all be flawlessly unified under the effect of Heterogeneous Fusion.
Selene will shed the limitations of her fragile, carbon-based flesh:
And complete her mechanical ascension.
