Chapter 76 - Into the Whispering Forest

  The forest wasn't silent.

  It whispered.

  Branches swayed without wind.

Leaves turned to follow Ayla as she stepped beneath them.

Roots shifted like something alive was breathing beneath the soil.

  Cael walked at her side—

  close, steady, eyes scanning constantly.

Ren marched behind them carrying a stick the size of a small tree.

"IF ANYTHING TOUCHES AYLA I'M HITTING IT—"

  Eris sighed.

  "That's not a weapon."

"It will be if I BELIEVE HARD ENOUGH."

Lami clutched her staff with both hands.

Mila walked slowly, leaning on Lami for support, eyes glowing faintly with the Seal's residue.

Aster Vale followed last, quiet but tense.

  The deeper they went,

the more the forest bent inward—

forming a tunnel of twisted branches and glowing moss.

  Alya felt it first—

  A tugging behind her breastbone.

A faint hum along the Heart Link.

  She whispered:

  "The Seal is close."

  Cael's hand tightened around hers.

  "I feel it too."

  Ren gasped dramatically.

  "COUPLE POWERS—UNLOCKED—"

Eris grabbed Ren by the hood before she ran straight into a root.

  "Stop announcing everything out loud."

  Lami whispered:

"It's... almost like the forest is guiding us."

  Aster nodded.

  "It is."

Mila trembled as another whisper rippled through the leaves.

  "...Convergence..."

  Alya inhaled shakily.

  "It's calling me."

  Aster's voice was low.

  "No.

  It's testing you."

  The Clearing of Echoes

  The trees suddenly parted,

revealing a wide stone circle carved deep into the earth—

  ancient, moss-covered, humming with energy.

  Alya stopped at the edge.

  Cael stepped closer to her.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

  "What is this place...?"

  Aster answered:

  "The Echo Clearing.

Where the Seal judges the truth in the heart."

  Ren flailed,

"WHY DO THESE PLACES ALWAYS HAVE NAMES LIKE THAT—CAN'T WE HAVE A HAPPY-MEADOW OR A TOTALLY-NOT-DANGEROUS-FIELD—"

  No one answered.

  Because Ayla had stepped forward.

  She felt it.

  The resonance.

  The weight.

  The heat.

  Her magic flickered—

  a burst of air,

  a flash of fire,

  a swirl of water,

  a tremor of earth,

  a glint of light—

  then sputtered out.

  Alya frowned at her hands.

  "...Still unstable."

Cael put his hand over hers.

  "Use me."

  Alya swallowed.

  "Cael, I don't know how—"

  "I do."

  His voice was steady.

"Just reach for me. I'll ground you."

Alya's chest tightened painfully at the faith in his voice.

  Before she could try—

The center of the clearing rippled like a pond disturbed.

  Something rose from the ground.

  Not a creature.

  A form.

  Alya's breath hitched.

  It was—

  A mirror version of her.

  But not the ascended one.

  Not the monstrous one.

A version of her that looked... empty.

  Eyes dull.

  Heart hollow.

  Alya whispered:

  "Is that... me?"

  Aster's face tightened.

  "It's your potential.

The version of yourself that loses everything."

  Ren screamed,

"CAN WE NOT SUMMON CURSED ALTERNATE AYLA AT 8AM—"

  The hollow Ayla stepped forward—

  silent, eerie, emotionless.

  Alya flinched.

Cael moved protectively in front of her.

But the hollow-Ayla raised a finger toward Cael—

  expression blank—

and the Heart Link pulsed sharply.

Alya gasped in pain, collapsing to her knees.

  "Alya!" Cael caught her immediately.

  Alya clutched her chest.

  "Wh-what... what is she doing—?"

  Aster's expression darkened.

  "She's severing your anchor."

  Ren shrieked,

  "SEVER WHAT?! SHE BETTER NOT—"

Eris tightened her grip on her wind.

  Lami cried,

  "C-can we stop her?!"

  Aster shook his head.

  "Only Ayla can."

  Cael helped her stand.

  "I've got you."

  Alya tried to summon fire—

  but it sputtered.

  She tried wind—

  and it fizzled.

  Her voice shook.

  "My magic... won't hold..."

  Cael whispered urgently:

  "Then use mine."

  Alya blinked.

  "What?"

Cael lifted her hand, pressing it to his chest.

  The Heart Link glowed.

  Cael inhaled deeply.

  "Pull from me.

  Whatever you need."

  Alya's lips parted in shock.

  "I can't—

  I'll drain you—"

Cael stepped closer, forehead touching hers.

  "Then we fall together."

  Alya's heart twisted violently.

  Ren gagged loudly.

"I'M SORRY—WHO GAVE YOU TWO THE RIGHT TO ROMANTIC MONOLOGUE IN THE DEATH FOREST—"

  But Ayla didn't hear her.

  She reached out—

  tentatively—

  through the thread.

  And felt Cael's resonance.

  Warm.

  Solid.

  Steady.

  Alya gasped.

  "It's... beautiful..."

  Cael flushed—but didn't pull away.

  "Use it."

  Alya extended her hand—

  power humming faintly,

  flickering—

then blooming with Cael's steady resonance pulling it together.

  A flame sparked.

  A stable one.

  Her eyes widened.

  "It worked!"

  Ren cheered,

  "POWER OF LOVE, BAYBEEEEE—"

  The hollow-Ayla stepped forward silently.

  Alya stood straighter.

  "No."

  Her voice held.

  "I'm not you."

  The hollow version paused.

  Alya's voice strengthened.

  "I know who I am.

  I know who I love.

  And I'm not losing him."

She pulled harder through the Link—

  Cael inhaled sharply—

  but braced himself, grounding her.

  Alya's magic flared,

  shining five colors at once.

  She thrust her hand forward.

A blast of stable convergence energy hit the hollow form—

  shattering it like glass.

  It dissolved into light.

  Silence.

  Alya collapsed forward.

Cael caught her before she hit the ground.

"You did it," he whispered, breath unsteady.

  "You actually did it."

  Alya panted, exhausted.

  Ren jumped in place.

  "YESSSSSSS—AYLA 1, EVIL MIRROR 0—"

  Eris smacked her back gently.

  "Let them breathe."

  Lami exhaled in relief.

  Mila whispered:

"That was only the first trial."

  Alya froze.

  Cael stiffened.

  Aster nodded grimly.

  "Yes.

The Seal wants to see if your choice holds under trauma."

  Ren paled.

  "You mean—"

  Aster whispered:

  "Yes.

Next, it will test what happens when the anchor is threatened."

  Alya's heart stopped.

  Cael's hand tightened in hers.

A cold, creeping wind curled through the clearing.

  A whisper followed.

  "Convergence...

show me what you fear losing."

A shadow peeled itself from the trees—

and formed into a shape Ayla instantly recognized.

  Her blood went cold.

  Rian.

  Except—

  not the real Rian.

  A nightmare version.

A projection of the Seal's will.

  He smiled—

  and looked straight at Cael.

Alya stepped in front of Cael immediately, magic sparking in her hands.

  "No."

  She bared her teeth.

  "Not him."

  Rian's shadow laughed.

  "Then prove it."
