Chapter 5: There is Fire

It did not take long for Ella to reach the fort. The sun was still high up in the sky, yet the picture she expected could not be found. She expected a couple of guards at the gate asking her where her papers were, but this wasn’t the case.

Instead, she got a fort that was on fire. The smoke stacks from before became clear. People were shouting inside of the place. At the very least, there were no civilians to be seen. Armored people ran around with bows or swords and aimed towards a creature—one that Elanore saw previously.

The wyvern landed on a stone structure. Blood poured from its wings, and there were some tears along its flesh. However, Elanore could see that the wounds were slowly mending themselves. Already, the wyvern had killed several men, yet more seemed eager to meet the same fate.

  [Inspect]

Whoa, this one actually has a name and a much higher level. Though, why did it decide to attack this fort?

“Men! Ready your bows for another attack! This one will not last much longer!”

A commanding figure stood with his sword raised towards the sky and shouted to rally his troops.

The men under him shouted in acknowledgment and prepared their bows. They drew the strings back, and they readied their bombardment of arrows.

On the other side, Naela prepared a breath attack. Flames started at the back of her throat, and she launched a fireball at the same time that arrows launched into the air.

Elanore watched all of it happening from the entrance of the fort with a conflicted expression. She was torn between helping the people or saving the wyvern. Really, there was no need for her to do either one. If she let it play out, nature would take its natural course.

On the one hand, a wyvern would be victorious, and all of the people would burn to cinders. On the other hand, their enchanted arrows would find their marks and render the wyvern dead. She seemed to be holding on by a thread, and Elanore didn’t want this outcome to play out.

She was reminded of an old dog that used to come up to her on long walks through the park. She rarely went outside, yet that dog came to her mind. The few times Elanore went out to walk, that dog would be right there. It would come up to her with its skinny frame, and it would wag its tail.

On a certain Summer’s day, the dog had stopped coming altogether. Elanore couldn’t imagine what happened to it, but all of the scenarios in her head were worse than the last ones. Over and over, she imagined that the dog had vanished in the same cruel fate that this wyvern would surely meet.

  Stolen story; please report.

The vampire witch took a deep breath, and magic funneled into her staff. A pink whirlwind of mana tunneled up the shaft.

  “[Great Barrier]!”

A gigantic pink barrier formed between the arrows and the fireball. All of them collided against it and created a loud boom.

Both of the concerned parties looked towards the intruder to their battle. They all stared at the vampire witch. Swordsmen and wyvern alike stared at her, and she began panicking.

This wasn’t supposed to happen! I need to act fast!

She looked to the left where the soldiers were, and she looked to the right where the wyvern stood on a crumbling building.

Elanore began running towards the chaos and twirled her staff again. She leapt into the air, and her feet landed on Manapie. “[Fly]!”

She managed to find her balance easier than she thought, and she focused her attention on the wyvern. She sped through the air towards the monster. Please don’t die.

The vampire witch delivered a punch to the creature’s head, successfully knocking it out in one hit. She cast [Telekinesis], and the knocked out wyvern floated in her grasp.

Elanore ignored the shouts from below and took Naela with her on the way out. Whelp, there goes my first meeting with people. Failed successfully?

She whizzed through the air with a floating wyvern behind her, until she found a mountain perch to land on. She gazed along the cliff’s edge, making sure there were no bad guys to greet her where she landed.

Elanore dropped the wyvern ungracefully on the cliff before landing right next to her.

“I can’t believe I just saved someone who killed a bunch of humans as my first meeting with people, but maybe they think I did them a favor?”

She landed next to the wyvern, and she started channeling a priest spell up her staff. Even though priest was her lowest leveled class, she imagined that it would at least be somewhat effective. The lower the level of the creature, the better even a small amount of health would do.

  [Lesser Heal].

The spell coated the wyvern in a green hue, and the monster started glowing. Ah shit, I didn’t even consider if a wyvern would take a regular healing spell.

Though, her worry was vanquished. The bloodied wounds mended even faster, and the wyvern’s health started increasing when Elanore checked it with inspect. Now then, I should get out of here before this thing starts waking up.

“Listen to me. I know you are passed out, but if you cause anymore trouble, I will not be there to help you.” Elanore looked at the large wyvern’s scaly tail following behind it, and she thought back to the dog’s wagging tail. “I don’t care how cute you are, you will really die, got it?”

She turned around and readied her flying spell to leave the creature behind. I guess I should at least see if there are creatures nearby. It would be my fault if she died after I knocked her out and left her here.

“[Demonic Eye].” Elanore cast the spell, and a pink eye appeared, hovering in the air. At the same time, an eye visage formed on her witch hat, and the floating eye lifted into the sky. It performed a pulse, and the strangest sensation attacked the vampire.

It was as if she had eyes floating everywhere around the forest, and for a brief moment, she could see different angles of the forest. She immediately canceled the spell right after.

“I definitely had too many energy drinks! That was the trippiest thing I could imagine. At least I know that this wyvern will be safe now.”

With that out of the way, the witch placed her staff beneath her, and she cast [Fly] again.
