It’s been a few hours since our fight with Hirose-sensei.
During most of the time, we were unconscious due to the final blow, thus we have no memories of that period. Luckily, we have someone who can help us with that.
“Alright Yasutaira-kun, turn your back and let me check your body. It should work its magic by now.”
Staying in the convent’s cell, I’m currently being treated by Hinako-san, one of the nuns living here. She was also the one greeting us in the morning, and not just that.
“OK, seems like [Holy Blessing] performs far exceed my expectation. All your wounds are 90% healed, and the erosive side effect can no longer harm you anymore.” she said while removing the bandages.
When I woke up from the long sleep earlier, Hinako-san expined to me about all of my injuries, including the massive darkish mark on my chest. As mentioned, it’s the side effect from taking on [Dark] attacks.
While not too present, this kind of mark will slowly eat my life force and absorb my mana. Eventually, the host will die horribly and painfully if not treated right.
Lucky for me, beside [Light], [Holy] is also a great counter, and with proper healing, I’m able to fully recover from it.
“Just a few more hours and you’ll be good as new.” she concluded.
“Eh, really? Thanks a lot, I appreciate that!”
“Ah don’t mention it, my dear child. I’m just doing God’s work after all, we all should be thanking him for this life.” she responded proudly.
“Yeah, you’re right…”
According to her, while fainting, we were, and I quote, “spit out” from the [Shadow Pit]. Seeing that, Hinako-san immediately ran to and dragged us into the convent. After that, she began the treatment while letting sensei get away from the church.
“You know, watching you two fight, I can really see a parallel in a lot of things.”
Stretching my arms, Hinako-san suddenly switches the conversation to our previous fight. As I turn my face to her, I can see a broad smile coming from her. There isn’t any bad intention or sarcasm, just honest impressiveness.
“Well, take Miyu-chan as an example. Contrary to your believe, she’s quite new here, only a full year to be exact. Despite that, she shows great potential to be among the best, and her fight proved just that.”
Then, Hinako-san repces the old bandage with a newer one and put it on my left shoulder where it’s currently hurt the most.
“Ouch! Can you be a bit more careful? The pain hasn’t gone completely you know?” I groaned.
“Ah, I apologize…” she said. “Alright, there we go, all good as new!”
After that, she sits down and continues our little talk.
“What her fight also proved to us is that her ck of experience was the sole reason for her defeat. She minded the surrounding too much and not in the right moment.”
Hinako-san then suddenly touches my chest, more specifically where my heart is. The broad smile is once again presented on her face, and her head tilts a bit too.
“But you two, despite being even more amateur than her, managed to do what she couldn’t. I would go as far as to say that there was a bit too carefree coming from both of you.”
“So what you’re saying is that unlike Miyu-san’s restriction, we let the emotion drove us to whatever and wherever they wanted?”
“Exactly! It’s quite an interesting contrary don’t you think? One limited themselves to the point of not being able to unleash their true power while the other keeps push themselves beyond their capability.” Hinako-san said, smirking at me.
“Ahaha, when you put it that way…I don’t think I can deny that…”
This conversation, while seems like it leads to nowhere, gives out one valid point: we should really develop a new fighting strategy instead of just relying on explosive ultimatum. It may work for us now, but not in every scenario.
Once I’m done with this mission, I might ask Tiamat to help me with that. She’s going to be so pleased when she hear that, I can feel it already.
“Hmm, what’s the long face? Did I say something wrong?”
“Ah oh nothing…I was just thinking about some stuff…I’m sorry if I scared you…”
“I see…then it’s alright, you didn’t. Although, that face was still quite scary. You should look at it yourself someday.”
“Ahahaha…”
As I’m ughing it off, Hinako-san leaves her seat and walks to the kitchen. She first boils the water then takes out the mugs and starts making tea for both of us.
“May we come in?”
“Yes, go ahead!”
From the outside, someone knocks on the door. Hearing the familiar voice asking, I quickly approve. Immediately, the door opens, and unsurprisingly, it’s Mitsuko-chan.
From behind, Hanko-san and Miyu-san are also here as well. As they’re walking in the cell, I greet all three of them with the arm still has its shoulder working properly.
After that, they all get themselves a chair and sit near me.
“Finally Yasutaira-kun, you’re awake! How are you felling right now?” Mitsuko-chan asked.
“Haha, well…for someone who’s been sleeping for a few hours, yeah I’m pretty good. How about you though?”
“Ah uhm…I think it’s best not to answer that question…”
“Let me guess: Sleep-talking?” I jokingly questioned.
As expected, Mitsuko-chan starts blushing, while Miyu-san delightfully chuckles hearing our conversation. Meanwhile however, Hanko-san looks like he’s just being hit the nail on his head.
“Kid, you have no idea what kind of stuff she was saying in her dream. It could shatter even the strongest mind.”
“Yeah Yasutaira-san, and you couldn’t even believe just how much I’ve heard her. If I wrote down all of what she said in her sleep, that book would be inches thick.” Miyu-san added in.
“Ahahaha…I can quite imagine the horror you’ve been through…”
“Hey I’m still here you know!??”
Thanks to our little exchange, Mitsuko-chan is now even more embarrassing. I have to cheer her up for a few solid minutes and luckily, she finally calms down.
“Still, it’s quite rude to say something like that to a woman you know?” she said.
“Yeah I know, that won’t happen again, I promise…” I sincerely replied.
After that, the four of us begin another conversation; mainly about the fight with Hirose-sensei and what kind of information we got from that. Although not too much, there’s still some note-worthy details.
“Huh, that’s terrible…so both of them share the same ability…” Hanko-san amazed.
“Yeah, I’m afraid so…and the way she’s implementing that ability…it’s like a tool with limitless potential, ready to throw everything and anything at you.”
“Damn that’s crazy…” he excimed. “Well, at least I I was lucky enough not to be thrown into it. I might not be able to sit here or worse, die…”
Then, as the mood is being brought down, Hinako-san comes in with the tea. We’re lucky that this cell has enough mugs for five people, so each one of us get to taste it.
“Here you go. One for you, one for you and here’s another one for both of you.”
“Ah, thanks a lot Hinako-san.”
“It’s my pleasure Mitsuko-chan. Please enjoy.”
Receiving the tea, we all take a little sip. We already had a taste of what it likes, and needless to say, it has become our favorite. Especially Miyu-san, who seems to enjoy it more than all of us.
“Mmm, amazing! Nee-chan’s tea really is the best!”
“Now now Miyu-chan, be humble. You’re already sitting down, so that’s half the job done. I may have spent a lot of my time harnessing the power to make good tea, but mine is still nowhere perfection. Please, don’t overhype it.”
“But Nee-chan… it really is that good, right everyone?”
To her surprise, we’re all quite reluctant. We all realize where this conversation might go, and not blindly agree with her is the best course of action. It may sound harsh, but it’s the necessary harsh.
“I see…*sigh* fine, you’re right Nee-chan. I guess I shouldn’t hype it that much. Learning how to restrict yourself from those temptations is important after all.”
“Yes Miyu-chan, but at the same time, you need to learn how to keep that passion fire burning as well.”
“Huh, what do you mean?” Miyu-san asked confusedly.
“What I mean is that you ck not only experience, but bance as well. Once you find it, harness it and put it through multiple tests, I’m sure you’ll fully get what I said. I’m counting it on you Miyu-chan.” Hinako-san said with a charming smile on her face.
Now, it’s Miyu-san’s turn to blush. She even shakes her hands frantically and almost spills her tea hearing those words. Fortunately, she’s able to keep her composure, thus no tea can be found on her uniform.
“Eh, I thought our conversation ended already? Why did you still bring that up?”
“Conversation? What kind of conversation was that Yasutaira-kun?” Mitsuko-chan asked.
Having no choice, I tell everyone about it. Soon, various reactions pop out of each person: While Mitsuko-chan is amazed by the profound yer of it, Hanko-san on the other hand is somewhat confused and relieved by it.
“And I thought it was something fishy that somehow involved Miyu here in the worst way possible.” he said. “Well, I’m gd I was wrong, because who knows what kind of situation we would be dragged in if it was actually the opposite.”
“Haha, yeah, I can’t quite fathom the horror of it at all…That’s not going to be good for my health at all…” I jokingly responded.
Finally, we turn to Miyu-san, the center of this talk. She’s been looking down her mug for quite a while now, and in her eyes, I can see and feel her pondering a lot of things right now.
“Woah, I…I never looked it that way…It’s just that…I guess I hasn’t able to fully realize what I’m truly capable of this entire time…I was caught in the moment for so long…” she reflected.
“Well Miyu-chan, that’s why I’m here with you, that’s why this church is here with you: To help you become not just a better fighter, but a better servant to Jesus. You came here seeking for help and salvation, and I can assure you that, no matter what you’ve been through or what awaits you ahead, you’ll get just that. Isn’t that my promise to you?”
With those words, something awakens inside Miyu-san. She happily smiles while trying her best to hold her tears, which she succeeds. After that, she drinks up the remaining tea as a way to contain all that emotion and calm herself down.
“Nee-chan…I think I finally get it now. All these times…I’ve been worrying too much about basically nothing that…I got distracted by them.” Miyu-san said. “But no more: I now know what I need to do and where I’m heading next. Nee-chan, thanks for enlighten me. I couldn’t have done it without your wisdom.”
“Haha well…then I guess I should be thanking him too.” Hinako-san said, turning her eyes at me.
The sudden act surprises me a lot. I was going to finish the tea as well, but when Hinako-san looked at me, I could only put the mug down on the pte. Following that, everyone then also starts looking at me.
“Think about it Yasutaira-kun: If it wasn’t for the bravery of you and your friend here, Miyu-chan might not be able to see those minor errors in her way. I’d say your help is just as impactful as mine.”
“Ah, I see…”
She really is a smooth talker isn’t she?
From just a casual conversation, she managed to turn it to a motivational moment for her colleague. Not only does that require the brain and knowledge, it also needs the heart and sensitivity of that said person as well.
Hinako-san, just what in the world is you anyways. What can I possibly do to come near that level and follow through?
“Well, if we follow that logic…then I guess we should all thank God for it too don’t you think? I mean, if it wasn’t for him, I may not appear here and give her that lesson, and this conversation may never exist in the first pce right?” I said.
“Oh hey, what did you know, not bad Yasutaira-kun. You really are quite good with your words too! I’m impressed!” Hinako-san happily complimented.
“Haha, you see…I just, you know, say what’s on my mind at that moment. There’s no script, no practice beforehand, just off the dome and from the bottom of my heart.”
Hearing that, Hinako-san smiles satisfactorily. After that, she takes another sip of her tea. Meanwhile, I take a look around to see everyone’s reactions, and well…they’re quite the same.
“Eh, what’s with you two and that chemistry Yasutaira-kun? What happened when I was recovering?” Mitsuko-chan said shockingly.
“Amazing…who could have thought that someone your age is capable of such thing…I still have a lot to learn…”
“Ah kids these days…really makes me feel like an old man already. Maybe I really am out of time and out of touch after all.”
Despite showing the same reaction, just with difference emotions, everyone is actually in a very good mood. After all, it’s just a simple chitchat between people who just befriended with each other not too long ago.
However, things will turn upside down very soon.
“Well Hanko-san, I think I have to drag you back here for a moment, because you see…”
Before I continue, I take a look at Mitsuko-chan, who immediately realizes what I’m about to say. Although very worry, she still reluctantly stays by my side, ready to hear it and defend me when the time comes.
“I give the USB to Hirose-sensei.”
As expected, Hanko-san furiously spills out his tea hearing that. Luckily, he doesn’t drop his mug following it, but regardless, I can sense the rage about to fire all over me in just a moment.
“What the hell? Why did you…what the…but that doesn’t make any…What is wrong with you?”
Not being able to form proper sentences, he still managed to spat at me. If there’s a table in front of him, I’m sure he’ll sm it aggressively. Fortunately, nothing is damaged in this room, as Hinako-san quickly get the mug and pte back before he could even think about breaking them.
In the meantime, Mitsuko-chan has also got closer to me in case something bad might happen. Miyu-san, while not knowing much about what I just said, still decided to help me by squaring up.
“Woah woah, hang on for a second. I know what I did was way too opposed to what you wanted, but just hear me out a bit.” I hurriedly calmed Hanko-san down.
“Oh yeah? Then five minutes: In five minutes, give me an expnation, and it’d better be the best one I’ve ever heard, or else!”
As Miyu-san is cleaning the mess, I take what has to be the most important deep breath ever. Then, I give my mug to Hinako-san and thus begin my expnation.
“Well, you see…you mentioned earlier that the USB is a copy and it requires a lot to get all of that information, so I was thinking, “What if I used this as a way to slow her down?”. She’ll be confused and doubtful about it, and when she realizes it needs decryption, that might throw her off and buy us some time.” I said with a slight fear in my voice.
Surprisingly, Hanko-san is actually listening to what I have to say. I don’t know if he would buy it or not, but at the very least, he has calmed himself down just enough not to freak out like before.
Around me, everyone is also holding their breaths as well. They’re, like me, waiting for the answer. It could be good, it could turn out to be the opposite, but either way, they’re ready.
“*sigh* As much as I hate to admit, that is still the right call. Honestly, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t do that if I were you, mainly because I might have not thought about it at all.”
With a calm voice, Hanko-san gave out his respond. Immediately, the entire room is relieved to hear that.
“But still, that kind of thinking process…either you’re secretly a genius or a genuine dumbass. I don’t want to know the outcome of it at all if I’m being frank.”
Then, he takes out another USB from his pocket and hands it to me. This time, he seems to be a bit more cautious, which is to be expected.
“Here, take it, it’s the original one.” Hanko-san reluctantly said. “It’s about the exact same as the backup, but please, do not think about repeating it. You almost gave me a stroke, and I don’t want another one.”
Laughing it off, I receive it. Then, just in case I ever make the same “mistake”, I decide to let Mitsuko-chan keep it instead.
“Well, that’s another right call all right…” Hanko-san jokingly said. “Seriously, I really wanted to know what went through your head in that very moment…”
“About that Hanko-san, I think I have the answer.”
Suddenly, Hinako-san joined in the conversation. We all look at her, and all we get is a mysterious smile on her face. That alone scares us, but also…it makes us even more curious.
“However, I feel like it’s best to let you guys figuring it out yourselves.” she said. “I’ll give you a hint though: It has something to do with “frustration”. Take that however you will.”
The anti-climactic answer disappoints Hanko-san. He lets out a big “Huh?” followed by a sigh. We, however, have a way different take on that.
“Eh, what is that supposed to mean? Hey Yasutaira-kun, what do you think about it?”
As Mitsuko-chan is looking for answer, I’m just sitting there pondering. Her words definitely have deeper meanings behind them, but for some reason…I can’t quite crack the code.
It’s “Frustration” she said, but what made her jump to that conclusion? Did I do something wrong? Or is there a part of me she sensed that I don’t know of?
Regardless, once I find the answer, it might be the salvation to this mission.
“It’s OK, Yasutaira-kun. You don’t have to get it right away.”
As I’m deep into my thoughts, Miyu-san comes sit right next to me. She then pads my shoulder to comfort me while giving me an affectionate look.
“You’re way smarter than me, so I’m sure you’ll figure it out along the way. After all, Nee-chan said it for a reason didn’t she?” Miyu-san said. “Besides, she knows I can’t dig it the way you do, so I guess she wanted to show me just how to do it. If not, then I might be a bigger idiot than ever before.”
Hearing that, I suddenly smile graciously.
Her words just shined a small light in me, gave me some small doses of hope. Even though it’s not much, it might just be the push I need to keep my calm and stay wide-awake.
“Thanks Miyu-san. I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Well, looking forward for that answer Yasutaira-kun. Don’t let me down will you?” she replied.
“Don’t worry, I won’t, and it’s a promise.”
After that, we finish all of our teas. During that time, we heard Hanko-san expining about the USB, what kind of files we’re looking for and how to get there. Unfortunately, we don’t understand them for the most part.
“Well kid, can’t bme you for that. It’s alright, I also have backup for that too.”
Then, he whips out his phone and starts typing. After a few minutes, he puts it back into his pocket. On his face however, there’s a bit pensive presented on it.
“So kid, I just emailed your principal everything about the USB, and well…let’s just say somehow, there’s a new lead waiting for you back home.”
“A new lead you say?” Mitsuko-chan asked.
“Yeah, but I can’t go into much details because well, she didn’t tell me much. She just said to me that it was a bit of a surprise, and whatever that is, I assume it helps this mission of yours a lot.”
“Ah, I see…”
After that, we spend the next few minutes trying to figure out what the lead might be while the two nuns are washing all the mugs and utensils. However, as expected, we got nothing.
“Well, I guess the best course of action is to just return to the academy and report to her about our trip. After all, we get what we’re here for, and sensei needs to hear it from us as soon as possible.”
“Yeah, you’re right Yasutaira-kun.”
With that, we quickly pack our things up, which don’t take too long since we didn’t bring much in the first pce. Despite that, Hanko-san still decides to help us anyways.
“Come on kids, just don’t stop me now. This is the least I can do to you two.” he said.
“Well, if you insist, then yeah, we’re counting on you.”
With Hanko-san’s helping hands, within the next fifteen minutes, everything is done and ready to go. After that, the nuns escort me to the main gate, but not before we say goodbye to Hanko-san.
“Yeah, see you two around kids. Please come back here someday, but only when the mission is accomplished, got it?”
In response, we all put our thumbs up, solidifying our promise with him. Then, a portal appears in front of us, and that officially marks the end of our journey to the church.
“Huh, this is…that man isn’t bluffing at all…”
Right now, we’re currently at sensei’s office.
Returning from our trip, we’re quite mixed emotionally. Despite that, at the very least, we came back with a somewhat mild success.
That “mild success” however has now causing a little bit of problem to us.
“Yeah, all the information, targets, date…they all match your specution!” sensei excimed.
Turns out, what lies inside the USB isn’t just what we already know about Toshikata-san but rather…the sole reason for the rise of [Dark Blood], the crime organization he’s working for, as well.
While decrypting, sensei told us a little bit about the history of [Dark Blood], their rise to fame and their fall-off as well. It’s definitely a tragedy from their side, but to some, it’s the sunshine that comes after rain.
Well, that is when they decided to switch to taking assassination jobs. Although not making as much money as they used to, it at least ensures their survival up until now.
“Oh my, I’ve heard rumors about their works in the shadow…never thought that it’s been confirmed like this. Life is full of surprise isn’t it?”
“Yeah, said the guy who’s the CEO of an entire multimedia corporation, [Maestro]-kun.”
Right next to her, a man around the same age as sensei is having a conversation with her. Despite that, he looks like he’s only in his te 20s, and with the medium height and blonde hair, it makes him a quite charming man to all the young dies.
Back when we just returned to the office, he was the one greeting us alongside sensei, repcing Mark-san who has gone back to America the previous night. Contrary to what sensei once told, he seemed quite supportive.
“You know kid, I first thought that her normally sharped eyes for talents had broken, but boy was I so wrong. You’ve proven yourself to be a potent part of this family. I’m very proud.” he said while shaking my hand.
“Uhm haha…I’m gd I’m able to show you my worth. Although, I couldn’t have done it without the help of those I care about. They should receive the same credit as I am too.”
“Oh my, where the hell did you even this kid Chiyoe-chan? He’s even greater than I thought!”
“You know, I really wish you showed me the same enthusiasm during the voting. It really made it quite easier for me and everyone don’t you think?”
Ending the conversation with a cliffhanger, I then gave sensei the USB I got from Hanko-san. Immediately, she grabbed and started decrypting right away, and that led us to the current situation.
“Well to be fair, it’s not like I can just access to such information that easily, Chiyoe-chan. You of all people have to know that don’t you?”
“Yeah yeah, whatever…Well, back to the topic.”
On her ptop, sensei then continues with her work. In the meantime, Mitsuko-chan and I sit at the sideline, resting and waiting for sensei and [Maestro]-san to finish it.
“Here, want some tea?” Kariuda-san asked.
“Ah no thanks, I’ve had enough for today. Another cup just won’t do it for me anymore.” I replied.
“Yeah Naomi-chan, I’ll have to kindly deny too.” Mitsuko-chan continued. “Right now, I just want to sit back and organize my thought a little bit…”
Kariuda-san, who just came in not too long ago, tried to offer us some drinks to refresh ourselves. Unfortunately, since we all grow a bit tired from it, she quickly switches to the two [Knights], who’s about to be done with the USB.
“Oh dear, I know this might pop off…” [Maestro]-san whispered.
Following that, sensei starts sighing while Kariuda-san is pleasantly surprised with what’s on the screen. Seeing that, Mitsuko-chan and I look at each other, looking for a decision from the other.
“Yeah, I think we should go and check it too. The job isn’t done after all.” I said.
With that, we both get up and walk to sensei’s desk. We both have specutions on what it could be, and as we’re standing next to sensei, our concern has the answer. It’s just that…
We are so not prepared for it.
“No way…”
“Huh, why is it there…”
In an unexpected turn of events, for some reason, sensei’s image can be seen on the ptop, alongside others as well. On the screen, it appears to be some kind of list, and as soon as I notice the bounty below the images, I immediately understand.
“Yeah kids, your sensei here is now the test target of [Dark Blood], and oh boy…five millions is quite a lot…”
As expined earlier, in order to somewhat recover a few years ago, [Dark Blood] has taken multiple killing order, and the bounty they collected have been keeping them alive since.
“*sigh* According to what I’m seeing here, the request was only a day before Yasutaira-kun taking the job, and the client is anonymous as well!” sensei groaned. “Who would have thought my name and face would be the outcome, right?”
“Haha, yeah, how did that happen anyways…”
All off sudden, [Maestro]-san starts ughing nervously. The judging look from sensei following that really makes us curious, and as expected, things just go in path we cannot anticipate at all.
“Oh that would be easy to answer though: Aren’t you actually the one pcing this request? You know, the “secret pn” that even I didn’t know and most definitely didn’t get to approve, right? Right?”
Hearing that, the three of us all turn our heads to [Maestro]-san, who’s even more nervous that he’s now looking sideway as a way to avoid sensei. That doesn’t really work to be honest.
“But…but…but it works am I right? Not only did I manage to track down their operation, I also made it easier for you guys to capture [Soulless Machine]. That’s textbook “killing two birds with one stone” if I ever see one!” he expined.
“Yeah, except you’re also killing a third bird, and that one is on the home team as well! You’re one hell of a lucky bastard that I’m a hard target to kill! You’ll regret for the rest of your life if something bad happens to me, you hear me?”
[Maestro]-san sacredly nods his head hearing all those raging words. After that, sensei lets out another big sigh before continuing to search through the USB one more time, trying to look for clues.
Meanwhile, Kariuda-san with the help from both of us manages to calm our blondie victim down. He almost cried after hearing the rant, but luckily, that didn’t happen.
“Hey Kariuda-san, is he normally like this?” I asked.
“I’m afraid so, but not always though. He’s never good at noticing someone’s feeling, and although it’s a small misstep, in some instances, it had become a major problem. He may be the best of the best when it comes to his expertise, but when it’s not, then well…you just saw it live.”
“Huh, I see…”
Then, Kariuda-san continues the conversation by telling me a few stories about how his ck of emotional concern affected him and everyone around him. They usually came out as comedic, but other times they almost costed him big.
“People said he’s the biggest man-child to ever succeed, and when look at the history, as much as I hate to disagree, I’m afraid I can’t. I respect his hard work, but man, those mistakes also weighted in a lot.” Kariuda-san concluded.
“Is that so…Well, I’ll keep that in mind…”
It seems like my impression on the third [Elite Ten] is somewhat…colorful to say the least.
From a dynamic retionship of two mature women to an insensitive man who’s also happened to be the greatest in his field, so far, this organization has never failed to surprise me. I wonder what else I will witness.
“Now now Kariuda-chan, I know this is weird coming from me considered what just happened, but please, cut him some scks will you?” Kiriwatari-sensei said.
All of a sudden, sensei turned her chair to us and joined it our conversation.
“Well think about it: Not everyone is perfect at everything, so while yes I was a bit harsh to him earlier, I didn’t go too far to the point of shattering his feeling. Better yet, Yasutaira-kun, why don’t you give us some of your thoughts? You out of all people know this quite well don’t you?”
“Me?” I asked surprisingly.
Immediately, everyone starts looking at me, including [Maestro]-san. The sudden switch really leaves me no room to prepare mentally at all. Honestly, I don’t really know what to say.
“You know Master, I’m pretty sure you should look no further than you own heart. After all, it’s what you always do isn’t it?”
“Well if you said so, then yeah let’s see what I got…”
As I’m still trying to figure out, Tiamat came in and gave me the advice I need the most. Hearing that in my mind, I quickly calm myself down, ready to give the people what they’ve been waiting to hear.
“*ahem* Right…like sensei just said, no one is perfect, and we all have our own fws. That however doesn’t stop us from trying our best does it?”
I then stop to see everyone’s reaction, and as expected, they’re all intriguing. It’s like I’m about to change their lives with such profound words, which makes no sense at all. Either way, I continue.
“Take me as an example. While yes I’ve managed to find a way to utilize my mana, there’s still a lot for me to learn and a massive power gap to fill. Despite that, I’ll still keep going, because if I don’t, then who will do it for me?”
It seems like my words are actually lightening up everyone’s mood. They’re still waiting for me to wrap it up, this time in an even more hopeful way.
Well then, let’s end this with a bang shall we?
“Of course, I can only do it because I know exactly what needs to be done, and the same can be said to you, [Maestro]-san.”
“Eh, really?” he asked.
“Yeah. Well let’s see…you’re good with complicated equations and ten-steps-ahead level of pnning, but when it comes to emotions and feelings, you’re out of your element…What if you also count them into those equations and pns as well?”
“Count them in? But how though?”
“Uhm…so take your pn of luring Toshikata-san out. Since you didn’t alert sensei about it, you made her a bit upset. Maybe next time, whenever you want to involve someone into it, make sure to consider as much as you can: Are they avaible? Will they be happy to do the job?”
“Or will there be any incident along the way?” he continued.
“That too, I guess. Regardless, what I’m trying to say is, if you find something you don’t get it, just find a way to make the most sense out of it. At least, that’s what I’ve been trying to do ever since.”
I quickly turn my head back and to my surprise, sensei is smiling happily and mysteriously. I don’t know what’s that supposed to mean, but I can already feel déjà vu about it.
“Well [Maestro]-kun, you heard the kid: Always try your best to think of the others before doing anything. I’m sure it’s nothing hard for a genius brain of yours, correct?
With that, his confident has now increased more than ever. As Mitsuko-chan walks to me, I can see [Maestro]-san looking up to the ceiling and smiles with pure joy. It’s a weird thing to see, but ethereal regardless.
“Almost thirty years in this game, and somehow, a teenager can still take me to school.” he joyfully said. “Serious Chiyoe-chan, where did you find this kid?”
“Now now, don’t ask that question twice. Even I don’t know it either, how can I expin it to you?” sensei jokingly responded.
“But you can still expin to him that all of these are just a py can’t you? I feel like he deserves to know…oh wait a minute…”
“Huh?”
As I’m about to give him another handshake, [Maestro]-san reveals something quite shocking to me. Immediately, I freeze for a solid minute before finally getting back to Earth with multiple questions to myself.
“Jeez you dumbass…all that for your so-called “test”, and you just folded like an omelet. How are you a CEO again?”“Eh, test? What test? What does she mean by that?” I asked confusedly.
“Oh dear this is bad…Kariuda-chan, can you expin it to him please?”
“Yeah sensei, I’m on it.”
Right next to me, Kariuda-san shakes me up a bit to make sure I’m actually back. Then, she starts telling me everything there is to known, including her involvement.
“So you guys just want to see if my heart is still as pure as you guys thought it is? Also, to add things up, [Maestro]-san here just wants to make an interesting first impression?”
“Yeah, I’m afraid so. After all, you never know what to expect from him.”
“So all those stories…are they fake or something?” I asked.
“Well good news, they aren’t. It’s just that…they were a bit exaggerated. The voting one though, it’s 100% true. He did doubt you at first, but since then, he really has changed his opinion.” Kariuda-san expined.
Seriously, is “Using deep conversations as a way to test one individual” a recent trend, or am I just too na?ve? I’ve been in two of those in a span of a few hours, which also came out with two vast different outcome.
Honestly, I’m not mad, just a bit overwhelmed. I guess I’m still slightly unready for everything and anything.
“So Yasutaira-kun…are you angry or something? Should I, you know, apologize?” [Maestro]-san asked sincerely.
“Ah no, that won’t be necessary.” I replied. “Believe it or not, I’m quite used to being pranked; it’s just that I was caught off-guard. I’m fine with that kind of tests as long as it’s harmless, so you don’t have to worry too much.”
“Really? Thanks kid, I’m relieved!”
Kariuda-san was right, you can’t really anticipate him at all. The same serious person who denied my entry is also the same man who’s been chilling with us this entire time.
You can never read his poker face at all, and I think that might contribute to his success. As weird as it’s about to sound, I really admire him in some ways or another.
“Well, I’m gd this little “prank” didn’t hurt anybody. Now, shall we get back to business?”
Saying that, sensei continues to work on the information she’s been received earlier. The four of us also try to help her by standing next to her and brainstorming. Any clue or one single piece of information can be very helpful, especially right now.
Luckily, that “information” has arrived just in time.
“Huh, that’s strange.” [Maestro]-san whispered.
“Hmm, what is it you say?”
“Ah well you see…I’ve been noticing something about this list, and I’m sure you’re about to figure it out soon.”
“Really, let’s see now…”
With that little exchange, sensei then starts scrolling up and down again. Slowly, she realizes something, and as she’s trying to remember, it finally clicks.
“Wait a minute, half of this list…aren’t these people from [Dark Blood]’s opposing organizations? I mean, the other half I get it, they’re high-value targets, but these…hey, don’t tell me that…”
“Yup, those requests are their perfect cover for their true intentions: Revenge. It may scratch you in those neat spots, but you can never truly satisfy in your life. It’s a shame isn’t it…”
As [Maestro]-san is giving out his thoughts, we start processing the discovery. Since half of the deceased targets were personal grudge, meaning whatever organizations they belonged to, they must have suffered quite some lost there.
Wait, they didn’t completely vanish, just one or a few of them…So, by that, it has to be that…Is that true? Can it really be the key?
“Hmm, what is it Yasutaira-kun?” Mitsuko-chan asked.
“Ah well, it’s just that…the list got me thinking, but I don’t think I can come to the conclusion just yet…”
Looking at sensei, I suddenly see a faint smile on her face as she’s looking at the screen. The same can be said about [Maestro]-san, who seems to be even more focused than sensei.
“Yeah, if this really is the case, then…you’re thinking what I’m thinking?” he asked.
“Yup, definitely, it can’t be another way. Well, I’m still checking it just to make sure…”
Closing the file, sensei then opens other tabs on her ptop and starts looking for something. In the meantime, Kariuda-san decided to leave the office to make some snacks for everyone. As she’s closing the doors, sensei lets out a small sigh.
“These guys, they really are a pain in the ass aren’t they…I really wish they could have just gone like the wind, but no, they kept coming back. They are about as stubborn as you are Yasutaira-kun.” sensei said.
After that, she opens one specific profile. On the screen, we can see the information of an American politician, and his name…I think it spells “Mark Collins”.
“That old geezer you’re looking at is an U.S Senator. He and my mother used to be friends before her unfortunate…demise. As for him, well things didn’t go as smooth as well.”
Sensei then opens another tab, this time it’s an online article. On there, we immediately notice the headline, which indicates the death of none other than Collins-san’s daughter.
“This was just one and a half year ago. It was a heartbreaking moment for him, but as expected from that old geezer, he bounced back quite well. Regardless, since then, her death is still a mystery due to its nature, well not anymore…”
Closing the article, sensei reopens the file from the USB. After that, she gets off her chair and turns to us with eyes full of determination.
“Alright everyone, listen up: This mission wasn’t simple to begin with, and now it just turns up a notch right in front of us. A lot of parties have been involved, and if we can’t handle this smoothly, it’s going to get a lot worse.”
Hearing that, we all nod our heads. An escaped prisoner is already a major problem, but when something you deeply dig down starts to resurface, it’s not just a lot to deal with, it’s a prolonged battle where every misstep could turn the whole operation sideway.
“Which is why, right here and right now, I shall propose a pn to end this in the least bloody way possible. Do not worry, you guys may be the first to hear it, but I promise you, you guys won’t be the st. All I need from you guys is to listen thoroughly and do it with everything you have. Can I trust you guys with that?”
The room then stays silent for a short while. There aren’t any decisions to be made exactly, we all just look at each other to see our reactions, and on our faces lie nothing but will and certainty.
“Yeah sensei, you’re the boss. Just count me in and I’ll deliver.” I said while raising my arm to her.
“Is that even a question sensei? I’m in.”
“Me too! I’m looking forward to that pn of yours sensei!”
“Oh my, the spirit of the youth…Well Chiyoe-chan, you heard them. Whatever that pn is, I’ll stay by your side until the end. We’re on the same boat after all aren’t we?”
Following me, Kariuda-san, Mitsuko-chan and finally [Maestro]-san put their hands on mine, essentially agreeing to sensei as well. Seeing that, she cracks a bright smile and soon after, she puts her hand on ours as the respond.
“Alright everyone, I knew you guys wouldn’t disappoint me. Now, about the pn…”
Then, over the course of next ten minutes, sensei goes into details on her pn, from what we should expect to all the steps needed for this mission. In addition, she also tells us about not only our roles but our allies’ as well.
“Like I said, this isn’t just our fight, but those who were hurt by them. By doing our parts, we’ll help them, and they’ll help us finish the job. We may not be able to bring back the people they once loved, but at least, we can ease their pain and those who aren’t a part of this mission as well.” sensei said with contemption.
Crossing my arms, I listen to everything she’s saying with maximum focus and determination. The pn might sound simple on paper, but in order to execute it, we’ll have to follow each and every steps carefully. No mistakes or do-over will be allowed.
With that train of thoughts running in my head, I continue to listen to sensei.
“Lucky for us, since the request was only made not too long ago, that means we ourselves also have some times to prepare too. Fortunately, I know just the thing for our first step…”
From her phone, sensei flicks it to the side, revealing a massive hologram of a building. The surrounding appears right after that, and after one good look at it, we immediately knows what she meant.
“In two days, I’ll visit this orphanage do some charity works at it. This will be the perfect pce to lure him out of the shadow and when he falls for my trap, he’ll regret ever getting out of that jail cell.”
As I’m hearing sensei talking, I take another look at the hologram and the scenery around it. It seems like the orphanage is at a rural area, and it’s definitely not close to Tokyo or any nearby cities. Regardless, I can feel the chill and peaceful vibe coming out of it.
“But sensei, isn’t that a bit too cruel? I mean, dragging them into this mission seems a bit too, you know, heartless?” Mitsuko-chan asked.
“I’m gd you asked. Don’t worry, I’ll inform them in a moment, and I promise you, they’ll be protected and left out of this fight. No one will y a finger on any one of them as long as I’m there.” sensei boldly decred.
Hearing that, Mitsuko-chan smiles happily. We’re both very concerning about humane side of this mission, so to hear sensei ensuring their safeties, we’re more than just relieved. We’re now more determined than ever to deliver this with our best abilities.
“Alright, you guys have any other burning questions? I’m open to answer them all, just don’t make it sound too stupid, got it?” sensei asked jokingly.
No one replies to her, meaning we’ve all caught on to her words, and we’re ready for action. Sensei, with a joyful smile on her face, gives out one final instruction. Since we all get it, she makes it quite brief and simple so that it won’t take much of our time.
“Remember, this mission is to capture Toshikata-san. Although a battle is inevitable, as Yasutaira-kun and Mitsuko-chan here has proven, safety of all parties must still be put on our top priorities. After all, our final and true mission is to ensure the future of this pnet, a job we should have and must always do properly.”
Then, sensei raises her right arm to the side, making her coat wave aggressively. Her face has dropped the smile and repced it with a serious and firm look as she’s facing all of us.
“So, I’m going to ask one more time: Can I trust everyone on this job? The answer lies on your will, so do not disappoint me!”
Without any hesitation, we all shout “Yes!” in response. Hearing that, sensei’s bright smile has returned on her face, now with even more satisfaction than ever. Filled with joy and excitement, she immediately tells us to go home and prepare for the mission.
“That’s all for today. Everyone, I hope nothing but the best for not just this mission, but for us and our future as well. I’m counting on everyone to deliver this job.” she said proudly.
In addition, she’ll send us the details of her pn for good measure, in case we need to review it more. We live in a modern society after all, might as well use it to our advantage.
“Goodbye sensei!”
Opening the door, Mitsuko-chan and I said our farewells in unison. As we’re leaving, sensei waves us back while Kariuda-san follows right behind to escort us.
“Sensei really is amazing Yasutaira-kun. That incredible majesty, the sheer will and wisdom…I’m never going to reach that level! She’s just…awesome!”
“I mean, I’m pretty sure you two have recognized it by now, but sensei is the unofficial leader of [Elite Ten]. The only one who can rival her brain is the same guy whom you just met, and unlike him, sensei does not have a somewhat unstable temper.” Kariuda-san replied.
“But hey, on the bright side, while I don’t think any of us is capable of that, at least we can still try. Nothing is stopping us right?”
Walking past the training grounds, the three of us decided to have a conversation. As we’re doing so, a few students see us and join in as well. They mainly show their remorse on the times they looked down on me while also thank me for my bravery back in the [Summer Tournament].
“Ah no, you guys don’t need to.” I said. “We’re young, of course we make mistakes. I’m just gd that everyone was able to see past the wrongful judgement and made the right decision. I couldn’t really ask for more you know?”
As expected, everyone is relieved to hear it. Soon, they thank us one more time before leaving and continue with their days. It’s good to know that out there, people can still refuse to let darkness consume them. I know someone who might love this and someone who do not at all.
Let’s hope that someday, those haters can also change their minds. That’ll be way easier and more comfortable than using fists to make them understand.
“Well, they seem happy. Good for them.” Kariuda-san said proudly. “Now then, the main gate is just a few footsteps away, let’s get you there shall we?”
With nothing left to say and a lot to prepare for the next few days, we leave the academy, ending our tiresome day with a lot to take in.
“Hello sir, what can I get you?”
Inside a bar somewhere in the busiest streets of New York, a bartender politely asked an old man.
Despite his age, the old man is still quite well dressed, and the sungsses really make him spot on as well. However, that’s not all.
“Let’s see…huh, what should I choose…How about you give me a little surprise? This old man has seen a lot, surely there’s nothing that can impress me anymore right?”
Feel challenged, the bartender immediately whips out his shakers and spirits. The customers nearby the old man are now also intriguing and soon, they all start following his moves
“Alright, one big surprise coming right up!”
With all his gears within his reach, the bartender begins his show. In just seconds, he has already poured his spirits into the shaker, which includes a base of lemon juice, orange fvored water, syrup and heavy cream.
"Oh my, what could it be...” the old man jokingly whispered.
Just from the ingredients, one can already tell where it’s going. However, the speed and excitement on the bartender’s face are what entertains the people the most, and so far, they’re all enjoying the show.
“Now, for the prologue before the real performance...”
Grabbing his favorite bottle of gin, the bartender measures out and pours it in. Then, as soon as he cracks an egg into the shaker...
“Woah!”
The crowds awe as the bartender closes the shaker with another one and begins shaking aggressively.
"Whoosh whoosh!”
As when you thought it couldn't get any better, the bartender goes on and turns it up a notch. After a few solid minutes of non-stop shaking, he quickly sets in motion and starts spinning the shaker on his fingetip like a basketball.
“Oh, now that’s a shocker.” the old man excimed.
"Oh yeah, then get ready for this!”
Not letting everyone wait any longer, the bartender grabs the shaker once again. This time, he quickly channels mana into his palm, and soon, that helps him flick the shaker up in the air.
“Whoosh whoosh!”
As the shaker travels an entire curve mid-air, it safely nds on the man’s other arm. The crowds, amazed by the performance, all cp their hand with satisfactory. However, that’s still not the end.
“Alright, careful, careful…”
With the shaker firmly in his hand, the bartender quickly separates the two cups to drop an ice cube into the drink as his final step. Then, he grabs the cup intended for the old man and puts it right in front of us.
“And now, for the finale…Here, we, go!”
Reuniting the two shakers, the bartender gives it one st good normal shake. After that, he drops the shaker off his hand, just to once again control it by using his mana as a small ptform, essentially controlling the shaker without even touching it at all.
“Whoosh!”
From that small ptform, the bartender unches the shaker up high. As it’s flying to the air, the shaker is also spinning donut, giving it quite another good shake mid-air.
Of course, that’s not all.
“Eh, what is he…”
“Hey, don’t tell me that…”
As the crowds start wondering, the bartender gets into the right position and looks up to the sky. Then, as soon as the shaker is falling down…
“Thud!”
…He elegantly catches it with his nose, while also keeping his bance in perfect condition.
“Woah! Amazing!”
“Yeah, what a show!”
The crowds excitingly cheer as the bartender continues his show. On the other hand, the old man, impressed by the performance, simply smiles happily.
“Alright, just a little more touch and…”
Flick the shaker up with his nose, the bartender quickly catches it back. Just when it returns to his hand, he immediately grabs the cup he set beforehand and chills it with his power.
“One Ramos Gin Fizz for our gentleman right here. I hope you enjoy it.”
With some final touches, the bartender delivers the drink to his customer with a charming and arousing face. Seeing that, the old man receives his drink with joy and gratefulness.
Does the scene and chemistry between the two feel weird? Yes.
Do you think that they shouldn’t act like that? Of course, you’re allowed to feel that way.
Does it matter? That depends. Because deep down, we sometimes care a bit too much about things we normally don’t want to waste your energy for. Sometimes it may lead to something revolutionized, and sometimes, it could lead to disastrous outcome.
The point is, no one can or should control how you truly feel. You’re the one to decide that, because in the end, no one’s living your life.
Well, enough breaking the fourth wall to yap about essentially nothing, let’s get back shall we?
“Oh my, this is delicious!”
Taking his first sip, the old man excims in surprise.
The perfect mix of sprits and the fizzling foam created by the sparkling water makes an experience that’s totally worth the effort. However, not everyone is entirely on board with that.
“You know, the making of this drink is already exhausting, why go the extra mile? Is your body able to handle it young man?”
Putting his cup down, the old man asked, with a little hint of curiosity and interest. The way he’s mysteriously looking, the calm and deep tone of voice, it really makes him a hard target to read.
This time however, the opponent is up for the challenge.
“Well, ten years of doing this job day after day can really test and exceed your limit, whether you like it or not.” the bartender replied while preparing for another order. “After all, human will is really fascinating if you think of it hard enough.”
“Oh I’ve given it quite a thought, and I must say…I humbly disagree with you.”
“Well now that’s quite an opinion…What made you think of that, mister…uhm…”
“Toshikata, it’s Mr. Toshikata.” the old man responded.
“Well then Mr. Toshikata, I’m Johnny, and it’s my pleasure to meet you.”
“Me too Johnny-san.” the old man replied.
“Japanese I see…Huh, eh Anthony? What are you doing here?”
Suddenly, another bartender interrupts to ask the man for some help. Apparently, he asked if they have enough vodka in stock for the week.”
“Just check the back, I’m sure they’re where they need to be.” he said.
“Really, thanks. I’ll go see it right away!”
After that, the two stops talking for a short while, as the bartender also has to finish the order while Mr. Toshikata takes another sip of his Ramos Gin Fizz. Both doesn’t take much time, so in just a few minutes, they’re back into conversation mode.
“Alright, about my earlier take…Hmm well…called me “old fashioned”, but I always thought that we’re way weaker than what we’re trying to portrait ourselves.”
“Uh huh, I see…” Johnny responded.
“The impatient, constant rush, devastation and even the fear….they’re just reeking, day in and day out. They all think that they know it all, that they’re not the same as the others, but in the end, when they’re facing their true destiny…none of their words or actions matters anymore. All that’s left is just hopelessness and despair, and then…nothing…”
As Mr. Toshikata’s voice is getting deeper and lower, it creeps everyone out a little bit. Not to mention, they can also sense some kind of aura coming out of him, and it doesn’t transte into something good at all.
It’s like we’re having a vilin in the house, just chilling while also scaring others as well.
“And that’s why I switched from shooting sports to bodyguard job, because like a wise bartender once said, “Ten years of doing this job day after day can really test and exceed your limit, whether you like it or not”.
“Eh?”
Suddenly, the grim and cold feeling surrounding the old man disappears, giving way for the warmth and sincerity to return and present on his face. Following that, everyone including the bartender is relieved inside, knowing they were overthinking a little too much.
“Oh my, did I scare you Johnny-san?” Mr. Toshikata asked.
“Yeah, sort of…I mean, who wouldn’t? I know a few people who would be unfazed hearing that, but they are not here in this bar at all. To put it simply, we’re just not built for it at all.”
“Well now that’s a shame…” Mr. Toshikata-san replied jokingly.
After that, the two would spend the next few minutes having a conversation, with Johnny still doing his job per usual. A few drinkers around him also join in occasionally, mainly for some small chitchat.
“And then I said, “Never mess with me again if you don’t want your hands to get dirty. No amount of undry will be able to clean that up”, and before he even knew it, “Bam!” I hit his face.”
As Mr. Toshikata is telling his story about the job, everyone awes in excitement. Essentially, it’s about a time when he took down a group of mercenaries who was out to murder his client.
They have some ideas what bodyguard is, but the story he’s been telling, it just stands out as something too good to be true.
And they were right, the story is somewhat fabricated, they just don’t know it yet.
“Hmm, that woman…”
Suddenly, while everyone is ughing at his one-liner, Mr. Toshikata shifts his attention to the television, where there is an interview going on with a fellow Japanese. She’s a woman in her forties, with cigarette on her mouth and a high school student standing next to her.
“Ah I see, so you’re also intrigued in the charity event too?”
“Charity event you say?” Mr. Toshikata asked.
“Yeah, there’s one that’ll be held in two days by [Knights of Tomorrow]. Apparently, a member of [Elite Ten] is the host, and it’s that woman you see on the TV.” Johnny briefly expined.
He then turns up the volume a little bit to hear the interview a bit clearer. The name “Kiriwatari Chiyoe” also appears on the title vector, indicating her identity.
“So that’s the famous [Phantom Mist] huh? She looks quite gorgeous for her ages don’t you think?”
“Oh my, taking interested in her already?” Johnny asked.
Taking his st sip, the old man pays closer attention to the TV than ever. Time, location, activities…he observes them all, almost to the point of not noticing the bartender’s question.
“Huh, ah well…*ahem* well like I said, she’s quite the beauty, it’s hard to not looking at her and not feeling anything right?” Mr. Toshikata said while trying his absolute best to hold together.
“Yeah you’re right…Ah excuse me, I’ll be back in just a sec…”
Johnny then leaves his new friend alone to take another order. As he’s focusing on making the drink, Mr. Toshikata switches from the TV to his own cup, ominously looking at it.
The glooming and haunting aura once again return, only this time, instead of releasing out in the wild, it stays inside of the old man, brewing and can only be seen in his eyes, which no one will ever get there as long as he doesn’t allow anyone to.
“*beep beep*!”
Then, out of his pocket, Mr. Toshikata takes out his phone and starts dialing. After only a few seconds, someone picks up right away.
“Hello?”
“Hey Daisy, it’s me. I have something to confirm, can you please help?”
“Ah sure, anything, please just tell.”
He then tells everything about the news he just saw. Of course, to make sure no one suspect a thing, he faked it, making it sounds like he’s talking about the bodyguard job.
“Oh yeah, you’re right, it all matches what we’ve been gathering…and it’s all on the news?”
“Yeah, I’m not sure what the move here is. Either is a trick or she just ft out doesn’t care. Regardless, assuming it’s not her territory, it’s going to be quite unpredictable.” Mr. Toshikata concluded.
“But that hasn’t stopped you before has it?”
“Yeah, and it’s certainly not this time. It’s my job after all, and such things won’t cut it.”
“Alright Toshikata-san, if you said so…I’ll send you everything we’ve found so far in just a moment. The rest is up to you, so good luck.”
“Thanks Daisy, goodbye.”
Hanging up the phone, Mr. Toshikata spends the next few minutes having one st talk with the people in the bar, before paying for his drink and leave his seat.
“Hey Mr. Toshikata!”
“Hmm?”
As he’s about the leave the bar entirely, Johnny suddenly calls his name. The old man turns his head to the bartender, and what he sees is the warm smile on his face.
“Goodbye, have a nice day.” Johnny said cheerfully.
Hearing that, Mr. Toshikata responds with a “Yeah, you too” before heading to the door and walks out to the street.
“I see…so that’s where you’re heading to…Not a great decision at all…”
As he’s slowly blending into the stream of people, he mysteriously disappears, signaling a bad omen waiting ahead of his prey.
