Chapter 9 — Fangs in the Dark

Aiko’s grip tightened around her kunai as the scraping sound echoed through the cavern. The soft glow from the stone monster’s mouth flickered across the walls, casting twisting shadows.

  “Kai… get ready,” Aiko murmured.

Suddenly, with a low rumble, the rock near the walls cracked open — and from the shadows emerged two giant scorpions

Kai’s breath caught in his throat. “A-Aiko…”

“I see them,” Aiko whispered sharply, eyes locked on the closest one.

One scorpion lunged toward Aiko, claws snapping, while the other darted toward Kai, cutting off his retreat.

  Aiko’s Battle

The scorpion lunged, its massive claw slamming down where Aiko had just been. She flipped backward, landing lightly on her feet.

With a swift flick, she launched her kunai at its eye — but the beast jerked its head, deflecting the weapon with its armored plate.

Aiko narrowed her eyes. “Fine. Close combat, then.”

Water shimmered at her feet as she activated Ripple Strike

The beast screeched in fury, twisting violently — but Aiko stayed light, moving like flowing water, looking for her opening.

  Kai’s Battle

Kai stumbled back as the second scorpion lunged, heart pounding. “Oh no, oh no, oh no—”

He raised his hands, focusing. “Water Veil!”

A thin layer of mist swirled around him, blending him into the damp air. The scorpion snapped at empty space as Kai slipped around its side, gathering water from the cavern floor.

Kai thrust his palm forward. “Splash Burst!”

A surge of water slammed into the creature’s face, momentarily blinding it.

Grinning nervously, Kai scrambled up onto a boulder, heart racing. “Okay… that worked! Kinda!”

But the scorpion roared, shaking off the water and lunging again.

  Siblings Together

Aiko dodged another crushing blow, eyes darting toward Kai. “Kai! Keep it busy — aim for the legs!”

“Y-Yeah! Got it!” Kai called, his voice shaking but determined.

For the first time, they weren’t just running. They were fighting together

And beyond the battle, the gaping mouth of the stone beast waited — promising even darker mysteries ahead.
