  Chapter – 4

  Well after getting appraised and brought up to speed Mr. Thane mentioned it would be a good idea to register as an adventure based on my current skill set he also said to keep quiet at least for right now that I’m an otherworlder. He stated it would cause quite a stir if word got out that then there would be an official documented case all the nobility might be after me to try to exploit me not like they could… anyways off to the adventurers guild. As I arrived I passed a farmer for some reason he looked familiar I didn’t quire know why but then he waved me down. Its you I was the one who found badly banged up on the road my names Keener by the way. He leaned close to my ear and whispered don’t worry Master Thane mentioned who you are don’t worry I wont be saying anything besides I have way to much respect for master Thane he pulled me out of tight spot not long ago so yeah I really owe even this doesn’t begin to thank him but ill try. I can see why everyone seems to respect him he's genuinely a nice guy...yes he is he really cares about this town and the people in it if he likes you buddy you've got a friend for life remember that...dully noted.

  Well I’ve finally made my way to the adventurers guild looks more like an old timely pub. There was a counter with who I assume would be the guild receptionist a demi-human girl a rabbit girl...(Now I'm no furry I’m going to say this point blank but dam does she got a nice rack on her and she cute as hell)...No time for that right now I’m here to register as an adventurer and start my new life. As I walk up she asks how are you doing today can I help you...Err yes I'm here to register as an adventurer ahhh I see no problem then let me just get some information from you first your name name please that would be Rod short for Rodavlas….Ohhh you must be the person the guild master mention all the initial adventurer fees have been waived for you. What really how I’ve never met the guild master...you must have he said your even staying at his place until you find a place of your own. Thane?...Yes Guild Master Thane didn’t he tell you that?...Nope he did not...now I see she said smiling he does have playful side he probably wanted to see how you'd react when you found out...ehhh in honestly not really all that surprised.

  So let me give you a run down on how the adventures guild operates she said. First we have room for rent on the cheap for adventurers just starting out as well as cheap starter gear to get you going will see what affinity you have for weapons and armor...(good thing Mr. Thane mentioned that to me it might make me seem out of place if I acted like id dint know what that was). So on terms of guild rank it is as follows your given a card with your adventure info on it along with your rank so you can be identified and move freely though different towns and areas without being taxed and entry or exit fee. The ranks are as follows from lowest to highest….

  G-Rank Copper Card

  F-Rank Tin Card

  E-Rank Bronze Card

  D-Rank Iron Card

  C-Rank Steel Card

  B-Rank Silver Card

  A-Rank Gold Card

  S-Rank Platinum Card

  SS-Rank Mithril Card

  SSS-Rank Adamantine Card

  on the ranking system you go and that determines what allows you to take on harder quests based on your rank. In terms of classes everyone starts out as a novice until they find a style there comfortable with and go from there classes are as follows.

  Novice – No class Affinity

  Basic Classes

  Scout – Lightly armored good at sneaking generally range fighter with bows or crossbows but close combat with short swords or dagger is fairly common as well.

  Fighter – Medium to Heavily armored good mid range to close quarter fighters with affinity toward swords & shields or 2h weapons not unusual to see a fight also carry a range weapon with them depending on what there doing.

  Caster – Light to Medium armored not physically combat oriented but relies on power magical spells to harm or heal generally use staves or wands along with magical focus to aid in spell casting.

  So I’m currently a novice and after a little bit of practice I found I was pretty good with a crossbow (I did do a lot of hunting where I’m from so it makes sense I have an affinity for crossbows and by extension bows. I’m also a rare affinity for duel-wielding with swords and daggers more so with daggers again probably because I’m used to skinning when I’m hunting so I’m opted also for a pair of a nice pair of butterfly swords and a skinning dagger just in case. For armor I went with medium armor Chain mail hidden under my trench coat that I got back from Mr. Thane my other cloths were shredded and not salvageable luckily my trench coat was. I also got some minor start gear a pretty dam nice backpack simple cookware etc… oh I also opted for a small buckler even a simple shield to have is a good investment.

  So it looks like I’m all set the rabbit girl (who’s name is Carrot by the way yeah like no one saw that coming a bunny girl with the name carrot how dam original) she said that’s a lot of gear to be carrying your going to tire yourself out not really most of it will go into my item box the whole guild room went quite. (whispers in the background did he really just say he has a super rare skill the item box skill that things crazy good for storing kills so they don’t go bad and can get butchered and make serious gold) I heard other saying what a waste he’ll be dead on the first quest great skill like that is wasted on him with some snickering in the background. Like I care what I they think buncha drunkards. So she showed me the quest that are good for starting off mostly gathering quests and killing rats in the sewer seemed pretty good for some combat experience and the gathering quest seemed good for general plant knowledge so I took both. She said the rat one pays better but a little more dangerous so I figured that’s the one to try out my style.

  So as I came up to the entrance to the sewers I saw another group coming up looked pretty new as well they were a little banged up but nothing serious. One guy turned to me as I was heading toward the entrance are you an adventure..yes I said why... you need a group down there theirs a rat king down there bigger and stronger then the others were going to report it to the guild we couldn’t beat or even lay a scratch on it...Noted ill be careful thanx for the warning I said...Dumbass I heard one say he’s gonna end up dead I barely caught another one saying just like that stupid kobold probably dead doesn’t matter lets report it. A kobold huh like the little lizard people from some of the fantasy books and games interesting...sad to hear the kobold died well if I find his corpse I can at least bring it back out of respect doubt those jackass would’ve. Yep theirs rats here alright dam seems like a never ending swarm of them must’ve killed at least 25 by now...the contract said to bring back their tails as proof of their demise...I’m feeling good like I could keep going so I do, hmmmm not gonna lie I am interested in that rat king thing I thought about where he could be and like magic my navigation skill popped up it was literally a big semi translucent arrow pointing me toward my target nice this is really handy. As I’m walking along I keep fighting rats about 38 kills so far….Then I hear I yelling its low but barely make it out as a plea for help I focus my navigation skill on what I heard yelling it looks like its in the same direction as this rat king.

  After a few more small fry that got in my way I found the source of screaming it was a kobold it must be the ones that group spoke of earlier and there was the rat king in all his disgusting regal glory it was literally just a really really big rat… and there was the kobold...girl? getting her legged chewed off...SHIT NOT GOOD shes gonna die if I don’t act fast enough. I pulled out my cross bow took aim...Wow this rat has a really big pair of balls be a shame if they got hit with an arrow….WOW talk about an ear screeching wail dam I never heard something scream like that guess hes not having anymore children he turned his attention to me...as he was doing that I cast appraisal on him his abilities and stats were ok considering he was just a giant rat with a torn open nut sack. Interesting appraisal even indicating the bleed icon since I just hit him with an arrow and apparently hes weak to just about everything so I tried hitting him with a lvl 1 lighting bolt. Layering Unlocked Lighting Bolt has been upcasted to Lvl2 no mana change needed same mana applied as If its a level 1 spell. A pretty big lighting bolt channeled through my body and out my finger directly right at the rat king and needless to say hes dead like really dead he looks like a huge over burnt chicken nugget.

  I rushed over to the Kobold chick yeah she looking in really rough condition...wait my skill that has all magic...lets see here it is Lvl1 Healing (as it was casting I see and feel it being upcasted to healing Lvl2 thanx to that layering skill being unlocked) I think I understand what it does but more on the later. Her leg that was dam near literally chewed off has been almost completely healed minus some scarring where it was at better then loosing a leg. A quick appraisal indicates she been poisoned and has a disease affliction… lets see Purify and Detox spells were cast but it did not up-cast why? I still had plenty of mana...it didn’t matter she was cured but she is very malnourished and scrawny but at least she was out of immediate danger. I picker up and started to head toward the exit I also added the rat kings corpse to my item box for the hell of it.

  I started to make my way back to the Entrance of the sewers I ran into a couple of more regular rat but as soon as they saw me they ran like they saw a mass murder coming right for them...I mean it not far from the truth I did take out a lot of them on the way including there daddy rat...you know what that did not sound right forget I said that. There we go fresh air dam that air down there was very chocking to me just as I exited the entrance I saw the guild master and a few other adventures that were with him including the jackasses from before. He ran up to me are you alright what happened down there you found Coal;s body at least we can put her to rest...What shes still alive you put someone to rest when there still alive. Mr Thane put his ear to her chest he immediately yelled get her to the guild hall keep an eye on her she needs medical attention send the bills my why got it no excuses. He turned to me and said I want a full report ASAP...yes sir I guess.

  So after giving my full report about what happened at least from my point of view it was cross referenced with the other groups report...To think a rat king showed up down there no wonder there were so many it became a breeding ground and thanks to you even managed to save Coal's life...whats the deal with the way they acted toward her… kobolds like goblins are mostly despised but every now and then you run into one thats not at all like there ilk they are actually pretty decent folk but because of there brethren there lots of hatred toward them but shes not like that shes kind and gentle just wants friends probably me and Draggy are her only friends she didn’t want to abuse staying with us she felt like she was using us I told her she wasn’t but she wanted to do this on her own. I respected that I made sure she at least had a room here and mostly been keeping an eye on her but when she gets stressed or upset she doesn’t eat which impacts her performance. (That explains why she so scrawny)

  Also Mr. Thane I like to report this directly to you but I did unlock that layering ability. Ohh yeah so what does it do, well I’m not 100% sure but I think it automatically lvls the spell I’m using to power level needed with what I’m using it against. I used lvl1 lighting bolt it upcasted it automatically to lvl2 and when I healed Coals leg that was nearly torn off it upscalled that to lvl2 but when I used detox and purification on her poison and disease it only stayed at lvl1 probably cause it didn’t need to be upcasted...Mr Thanes face goes blank for a second and says you are not speak to any one about this that ability is powerful ungodly powerful if you can low level spells only for them to be upcasted to higher lvls with only the same mana requirements you most certainly would be targeted and I might not be able to help you at that point understand Rod. Please please use extreme caution when utilizing that ability I know you may not have a choice at times but please be careful thats an SSS rank ability easily your a master mage without being a master mage.

  The Guild receptionist knocks on the door and pokes her head in and says that Coal is awake. Noted said the guild master keep her there do not let her get up ill go and check on her momentarily. Now for the compensation of the quest according to your report 56 rat-tails and proof of extermination killing a rat king a c ranked enemy and saving a fellow adventurer that amounts to 7 gold coins. Is that Alot? I forgot to ask earlier what are currency rates here. He lets a giant grand fit of laughter you could easily survive of that for at least 6 months if you were frugal enough with your money so it is a lot good to know...You pushed 3 gold coins back toward the guild master...give that to the kobold girl coal to help her out and make sure she eats. I have a better idea why don’t we go see her now so you can give it to her directly.

  You follow the guild master to small room in the corner of the second floor and he knocks on the door...Coal its me Thane can I come in...You hear a happy yipping like sound yes you hear a voice say. As he enters you enter behind him.. you follow behind him shes looking at you shes seems a little un-nerved by you which is to be expected she probably only has a few really good friends that are nice to her. Do you remember what happened down in that sewer Coal?...yes she said kinda sheepishly I was scouting for giant rats we were making good progress and then we ran into the Rat king we did not expect that I tried to distract it so they could get away are they ok she asked...(wow they left her for dead and she still cared about there well being she has a heart of solid gold how in the hell could anyone resent her even in the slightest) They are said the guild master they ran to report the rat king but im very upset that they left you down there do you know close you were to death? I’m ...I’m sure I was going to die my leg it was eating my leg I saw someone start to fight it then I blacked out. This is Rod he went down there to simply help with giant rat eradications. He got caught up in it since the other group left ...by the way they were demoted all the way to E-Rank if they cant handle a C rank monster then they have no business to be listed at C-rank. He killed 56 giant rats, he killed the rat king, Healed your leg cured your poison and diseases and carried you back up here...All by himself I might add. Oh my Gosh are you a B-rank? No im G-rank that was literally my first quest...What but but the rat king Is super tuff hes not C-ranked for no reason.

  Ahh speaking of which let me see your card Rod (you hand him your G-ranked copper ranked card only to be handed back a C-ranked Steel card Huh ...what????) you went in trashed a buncha giant rats killed a C-ranked monster saved and healed a fellow adventuer with no though of your own well being thats what it means to be an adventurer helping others when no one else will you have that engraved into your very soul Rod and so do you Coal I hear by also promote you from E-Rank Bronze to D-Rank Iron congradulations and 3 gold coins for saving your fellow adventurers even though they did not need to be saved. Tears begin welling up in her eyes while also smiling thank you Guild Master Thank you. I want you to buy some better gear and get something good to eat...I will guild master thank you. (she then turns to you) And You Mr. Rod...just Rod is fine Coal Thank you for saving me...Coal says the Guild Master I want you to form a party with Rod if he will except (huh wasn't expecting that but not like you have any qualms against it) Nope I fine with I could use the company and if she good scout like you said thats and even bigger bonus...she is and then some. So after a very eventful first day and quest you shot all the way up to C-rank and gained your first party member Coal the Kobold D-Ranked Scout this is definatly getting interesting.
