Day 50

After harvesting the cherry tomatoes early in the morning, I took a close observation of the well, and noticed that there weren’t only the six Kanalele swimming deep inside. There were also dozens of almost invisible Kanalele fry sprawling under them. Different to the vibrant colored adults, the fry was transparent, seemingly almost invisible. Hiding behind the ripples of the water, it took me some effort to even notice them.

Since the book basically stated that the fry could grow by themselves in captivity with little attention from the adults, I ended up filleting two adults to satisfy my hunger for flesh—no, for breakfast. It was for breakfast. I just realized that living in solitude has somewhat affected my sense of humor lately, and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not. Just now, I almost burst out laughing when I witnessed one of the red spirits slip and make this loud, fart-like noise, and I… I don’t know. I didn’t usually laugh at fart noises before. I don’t even know I had that kind of side in me. Fortunately, the spirit was unharmed, so, moving on…

By itself, Kanalele meat tasted a little earthy, perhaps because of how it take its the nutrient from the earth. But once it mixed with my nuts and cherry tomatoes in the eternal soup, the earthiness became the taste that elevated the dish. I think this current version of the eternal is the best one, yet. It’s not exactly on a gourmet level, but still passable compared to prior versions. I definitely had to visit the south-eastern part of the continent once I escaped this place. I haven’t been there before, and somewhat curious about how they would prepare Kanalele dish now.

Hmmm… should I conjure up pepper seeds after all? I think pepper would go well with the eternal soup, as it will add that kick to complement the bittersweetness of the cherry tomatoes and the mix-bagginess of my nuts. But since it might take a few more days until I could conjure a new seed, let’s cross that bridge when we get there.

  Today’s menu.
