Chapter 3 Manual

To whoever is reading this. My name is Ivan Sergeyevich Petrov. I am a leutenant in the Russian military. I do not know if I will live to see tomorrow or not. We are about to set out on a trip that might cost us our lives, or save us. I wanted to write a set of instructions and the path that you may go through to find a shelter. So I can at least help a single soul or more.

Veronika read through the lines. So this guy is pretty nice isn't he?

We have a set plan of action. Only some selected people have been informed. The shelter is sealed off from the outside world. There is food, water, electricity and it is spacious enough to fit thousands of people inside. It is located inside Vladivostok a military base. The shelter is underground. Hidden beneath a sealed off hatch that could withstand even nuclear explosions.

I want whoever finds this, despite the distance between Vladivostok and Severomorsk, to at least try and make the trip there. You won't be rejected if you get the attention of the guards stationed near the hatch. They aren't on the outside, so you must make enough of a loud noise to draw their attention.

I will now give some instructions on what you may use as resources in Severomorsk, the location you are currently in and where you found this letter of mine. The access codes to the weapon safe are kept in the headquarters building in room B-2. Find the access codes to enter the weapon safe and get yourself something useful.

The supply depot is secured with locks. Break the locks with something. We didn't take the emergency supplies. We only took what we needed for the trip to the shelter.

I will now head out with my team to this shelter. Best of luck survivor.

Veronika swiftly folded the paper and tucked it into one of the pockets of her coats. "It's time to go into the weapon safe..." She took in a deep breath. "Thank you Ivan Petrov. I'll remember that name." Veronika nodded with a smile as she took off. She looked up at the signs near the doors. It only took a few minutes to find the room. Room B-2.

Veronika pushed against the door, expecting it to already be open, only to bump against it and recoil slightly from the resistance it posed. "H-huh? Why is this one locked and the others not?" She pushed against the door, turning the handle repeatedly.

She stopped with a sigh. She dropped her backpack onto the ground and kneeled down to take out a wallet. She didn't have money in there, instead she had her smaller tools in there so that they don't get lost. She took out a lockpick, she took the turned towards the lock of the door and leaned closer to it, she wedged the tension wrench in the lock before she inserted her rake.

She proceeded to insert the rake in and out, until with a click the tension wrench turned the lock and the door swung open with a push from Veronika. The blonde haired girl grinned before she placed her lockpicks back into the wallet and returned it to her backpack. She walked inside and the first thing she was met with was a large collection of computers.

Veronika's mouth gaped as she stared at the box like screens. She didn't even see a single computer before, it was a sureal sight. She ran over to one of the computers and started pressing the keys on the keyboard that had many letters on it. She heard the soft satisfying sounds the keyboard produced.

Naturally, Veronika was interested in things she didn't know of. She had done a little research on computers before, she knew that the actual computer was the box shaped thing next to the screen and not the screen itself. And that you could type using the keyboard and navigate with the mouse. Alas, computers worked with electricity and currently there was none in the military base.

She sighed, she would have loved to turn on the computer and use it for a little while. She turned towards the files. "There should be some access codes around here but... Ivan. You didn't leave where they put the access codes..." Veronika's expression fell as her shoulders slumped. She was faced with several cabinets that she had to go through to possibly find the access code for the weapon safe.

  "Ughhhhh...." She groaned.

"Finally... I went through so many useless files just to find this stupid number!" She cried out as she fell on her back. In her hand was a single piece of paper. On it, a series of numbers with 6 digits. She had spent almost three hours doing this. Veronika wasn't quite sure if it was really three hours or not... The sun hadn't appeared for half a year, only glimpses could be seen every rare day.

Streaks of light, peaking through the black greyness that took over the surface of the earth, a reminder of the old glory the majestic star poured onto the earth's surface. So her temporal awareness was pretty much all over the place. She needed a clock to know how much time passed or when it was day or night. And those were pretty rare for some reason, it has been a long time since she saw a clock or a handwatch.

"Anyways this stuff is all over the place..." Veronika looked over the scattered papers, originating from the metal cabinets. Most of them were about incoming supplies and how much supplies were in the base. Though, she didn't need those as she had already recorded all the important supplies in the base that remained. And the papers were outdated so she just threw them away.

"Hm?" Veronika turned towards a smaller stack of papers. "That one might be useful..." She nodded as she looked over the several codes in there. It was a list of the access codes she managed to extract besides the safe room codes. There were vehicle codes in there and some other safe rooms other than the weapon room.

She wasn't sure about the vehicles, since she was a literal teenager and didn't know the first thing about driving. But she might find some staff there. Who knew?

She groaned before she took from that stack of papers the only important stuff. The vehicle access codes and the garage safe room codes. "Time to go grab myself a weapon!" Veronika stretched her hands up into the air as she walked out of room B-2.

She walked all the way to the weaponry. It was still sealed with chains so she had to use her boltcutters, after a bit of fight she managed to break the locks just like she did before. With a gentle kick, the metal door swung inward. She walked inside and she was met with a long hallway. She took in a deep breath, the sharp cold air of the outside causing her nose to itch. She stepped inside.

As soon as she was at the door she saw a keycode pad on the heavily armoured door. "This is where I put the access code?" She raised an eyebrow as she reached a hand out towards the pad before she took out a small paper which had the access code on it. She punched in the code and a few moments later. The safe room door clicked open. Veronika had to push pretty hard on the metal door to open it. It was heavy.

Veronika panted as she stumbled forward, almost tripping on the slightly elavated ground. "Hah... Why do they have to make everything so hard to move for little old me?" She groaned as she stood straight, her head slumping, feeling heavy on her shoulders.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

Veronika opened her eyes as she took in the interior of the safe room. Her eyes widened in shock. So many weapons were hung on the metal walls, held up by metal hooks. So many types of weapons with different materials that Veronika didn't even recognize. She saw a few that the officers had on them. There was a whole section dedicated to rifles, then pistols.

Veronika's breath quickened as excitement settled in. She wanted to grab a gun and shoot it immediately. Her hear pounded in her chest as she practically leaped at a rifle. She grabbed it. The moment she pulled it off the hook it almost fell from her grip. Her eyes widened as she scrambled to get a grip on the heavy weapon. It looked light, but it was heavy...

"Damn it! I wanted to use a rifle as a weapon 'cause it's so cool!" She pouted as she huffed and placed the rifle back where she took it. "I can't believe a rifal is that heavy!" Veronika crossed her arms as she turned around. Even though she wasn't actually going to use an actual rifle in combat because it was really loud. She still felt bad about not even being able to lift it.

"Whatever..." Veronika walked over to the smaller guns section. She looked over the large selection of one handed guns, finding some reliable while others unpractical. All of these would draw so much attention. She sighed as she looked over the names displayed. She sighed, none of them fit her. She wanted something small, but also fast at shooting. There didn't seem to be anything like, but that was when she stumbled upon it.

Makarov PM this one looks good... She placed her hand on the gun's handle. She took a closer look at the small design. "It can fit in my pockets... And it is very light..." She played with the weapon in her hand, dropping it several times. But it wasn't loaded so there was nothing to worry about. "This one is really good." She grinned as she tried the trigger.

"Hey! But it's still loud." Veronika frowned as she stared at the gun in her hand. "It's impractical. With how much bullets I have and the hordes of cannibals that it'll draw in with the noise. Not to mention the Snajnay Ten..." A disappointed look crossed her face before she turned around. Veronika glanced around the spacious safe room. There were so many weapons, but all of them were literally the loudest things possible.

Veronika sighed before her gaze landed on a table. On top of the table there were many different attachments to different guns. She walked over to the table and went over the different attachments. "There should be something that fits this makarov." She picked up several different attachments and she literally had no clue what they did.

Then, her gaze landed on a long black attachment thing. It was supposed to be placed on the muzzle of the gun. "What's this? Silencer?" Veronika read the label that was placed on it. "Silencer? Does that mean it silences the gun?" She asked outloud, her eyes widening slightly. This is just what I needed...

She tried to attach the silencer on the Makarov only to fail, realizing that it was wider than the barrel of the gun. "Ah, dang it..." Veronika sighed. She threw the silencer back on the table. "I figured this would happen. I need to find one that's suitable for the Markov." She furrowed her brows as she searched the table. After trying out several silencers she finally found one that fits.

"The PBS-M silencer. It fits perfectly." She nodded proudly to herself. "Now I have a good weapon..." She smiled to herself as she took five magazines for the Markov PM and stashed them in her pockets after filling them with bullets. She placed one in the chamber of the gun. "Awesome! Should I shoot now to test it out?" She chuckled softly.

Veronika pointed the gun at the opened door, just in case it shot out so the bullet would go outside and not harm her in anyway. She aloofly pointed the gun outside without much thought and pulled on the trigger. "..." She frowned. "N-nothing happened. Is it broken?" She frowned as the trigger refused to budge.

She tinkered with the gun, pressing random stuff on it until she heard a click. "What? Is it working now?" She pressed on the trigger without thinking much.

The recoil that the unprepared Veronika received was so great that it almost caused her to fall down. The bullet struck metal as Veronika's heart pounded at the sudden sharp sound. Her ears rung for a few moment as she gasped for breath. The sound was stiffled by the suppressor, so her ears didn't hurt much. But what she was surprised by was the recoil.

From such a small gun, the blonde haired girl almost fell on her butt. Veronika's hand trembled as she clutched the gun tightly in her grip, making sure her index was as far away from the trigger as possible. She heaved, catching her breath, her back pressed to the table as she steadied herself. With a trembling hand, Veronika quickly and frantically switched off whatever she had switched before.

"..." She stood, shocked at the power the gun packed despite it being so small. Then again, she was nothing but a teenage, 15 year old girl. She wasn't a trained professional to be able to use a gun so easily.

"I... I will only absolutely use this when it's necessary..." She knew she had in her hands power, a power that allowed her to kill things, to end things... No matter. She secured a weapon, she needed to go check out the garage area now.

Veronika walked, still slightly shaken by the recent happenings. But, that didn't stop her from spotting a second weapon. One that she could probably use as well. It was a crossbow. With several bolts near it in cases near it. She approached and took the cross bow.

She wasn't going to do the same mistake and try this one as well. She was just going to place it in her backpack and come back for it later when she needs it. She secured the cases full of bolts in their own pockets as well.

Veronika took in a deep breath before she walked out into the coldness once more. She walked over to the garage area. Once she was upon the door she took the boltcutters and placed them against the chains before pressing down as hard as she could. The chains rattled, falling down onto the dampening snow.

Veronika pushed the door open and walked in. Walking outside in the snow actually helped her calm down from the earlier incident. The gun was pointed nowhere near her face, but the power it displayed just made Veronika's mind wander to what-ifs. What if the barrel was pointed at my face? What if the bullet bounced and came back to kill me? What if...

She shook her head, breaking herself out of these unnecessary thoughts. "Let's just..." As soon as her eyes landed on what was in the garage her jaw practically fell to the floor. There were several vehicles of different shapes and sizes. Each area of the spacious garage had a vehicle of its own. There were jeeps, trucks and even tanks!

Veronika's eyes lit up in excitement as she ran towards one of the tanks. "Holy crap! This stuff is so cool! I can't believe they left all these things here!" She giggled in excitement as she latched on a military truck and climbed up. She jumped in excitement, her eyes practically turning into stars.

She jumped out and circled the truck before she attempted to open the front door only to fail. It seemed like the door was locked. "Dang it! If you were just going to leave it here why didn't you leave it unlocked?!" She stomped her foot onto the ground pouting.

Veronika's eyes glazed over the many vehicles. She noticed how each vehicle was a certain distance from each other and that meant that some of the vehicles were missing. There were large gaps in between certain vehciles where another could fit. "So they took some and left some? Makes sense. Since it was an emergency..." She nodded slowly, understanding flashing across her face.

"But more importantly..." Veronika stood facing a certain tank. It was a vehicle used in warfare, a mjestic titan that struck fear in the enemy's heart. With each roar of its engine an enemy falls. "This tank..." Veronika double-checked the paper she had in hand. "T-80BV... It's... I have its access codes." A beed of sweat rolled down her neck despite the cold.

"It's... I can start this tank up." Her eyes widened as her mind reeled. "But... But how am I supposed to do that? I don't know the first thing about tanks..." She furrowed her brows, and that was when her eyes fell on the table near the tank. There were several scattered tools there. Probably maintenance tools.

But atop the table there was a strange item. It was the odd one out of all the tools there. A book. She jogged over to the table and looked took a glance at the book. "T-80BV tank manual..." Veronika's eyes widened. "I have my solution right here..." Veronika grinned as she reached for the manual.

It was a thick book, she could probably knock someone out if she hit them hard enough with this book. "I've been like cheese rolling in butter lately." She chuckled softly as she stored the book in her backpack for later reading. She was going to stay here for a long time after all.
