Edward sat behind his desk in his office; he was having a tiring day, coupled with the fact that he is finding it hard to get the birthday girl out of his mind since Saturday. There was a knock on the door, then his secretary came in. "Doc, your next appointment is here."
Without raising his head, "Okay, let him in," he replied.
After the session with his patient, he received a call from his closest pal, Collins, who happens to be staying out of town.
"I'll check up on you later today; I just got into town," Collins said after they exchanged pleasantries.
"Alright, boss, I'll be waiting for you."
Edward and Collins had been childhood friends; their fathers had also been childhood friends till they eventually died.
Collins had left the city some months after his dad passed away, and since then he only comes back once in a while.
They went to the same school right from kindergarten to the university. They are both doctors but with different specializations.
Edward's parents gave birth to just two, while Collin's parents gave birth to three.
Both mothers are alive and still friends.
At the bar in a noisy hotel, the two friends sat and talked about nothing in particular while taking their drinks.
Both of them are good at holding their drink.
Most times, when Collins is in town, he stays at a hotel, while sometimes he stays at Edward's place.
The chat drifted to Edward's sister. "How's Dia?" Collins asked.
He and Diana had quite a relationship.
"She's in school; she has been staying at her hostel for a while now."
"Okay, let's get going already."
Diana opened her bag to get the spare key to her brother's apartment. After searching for a while, she finally opened it with shaky hands in her drunk state. She had a bad day in school today, and to top it off, Michael came to ask her for forgiveness.
She was very close to forgiving him before she remembered that she had sworn off him and men because of how he and her ex had hurt her. She told him no and that she did not trust him, and then she went to a bar to drink so she could forget that she seems to have bad luck in relationships.
She came inside and left the door open; she staggered to the sofa to sit. She was muttering to herself as she stood again to go get water in the kitchen. Upon returning to the sitting room, she saw the headlights of her brother's car and then another car.
She laughed, "Well, I am drunk; that's why I can see two cars instead of one." She staggered to the door again.
Edward and Collins came down from their cars only to see that the door was open. Collins said to himself, "Hope it's not what I think it is."
Edward turned to Collins. "Guess we are not alone tonight; Diana is at home."
In reply, Collins said, "I need to go back to the hotel, em…"
"You are here already, so let's go in."
To avoid suspicions, he followed Edward in.
Edward saw his sister, and immediately he knew she was drunk, which is so unlike her.
"Diana, what's wrong? Why are you drunk?"
"In my sorry state I am seeing my first heartbreak; I see him always in my dream," she replied, smiling.
Edward looked at Collins because he could not understand what she was saying.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
The look on Collin's face said it all.
She wasn't lying.
Collins started scratching his head.
"Hey man, what's up? What is she saying?" Edward asked
"Is Collins really here?" She walked to him and touched his face. "...You really shouldn't have left me, you know," she laughed sarcastically. "But you did. I always see you in my dreams. Do you come to me in my dreams? Do you always dream of me too?"
Collins was getting speechless.
"Wow, wow, this is getting interesting; I will grab a seat." Edward said.
Collins held her hand. "Go and have your bath and sleep; you are drunk."
"No, you have been avoiding me all this while. I know I won't see you in the morning. I won't sleep."
"I will be here when you wake up; come, I will take you to bed."
"Really…" She was beaming with a smile, and Edward noticed it's been long since she had such a real smile. "...Will you lie with me? Please don't go; just this last time, I won't ask you for anything again, I promise."
"Okay," Collins replied, and then he took her to her bedroom.
In the bedroom, "I still love you, Collins. Why did you run away from me? You even moved out of town. That's so unfair. If you hadn’t left, I wouldn’t have experienced another heartbreak…" She started breaking down in tears.
"I'm sorry, baby; we will talk tomorrow when you are sober."
Immediately he got back to the sitting room. "Wow, I find it hard to believe I didn't know about you guys," he heard Edward say.
"I fucked up, you know; I cheated, and I did not know how to face her anymore. I loved her so much."
"I won't judge, but I can't believe this is coming from you. So all this while we used to hang out and you avoided girls, it was because you were secretly dating my sister, and there I was thinking you were gay."
"Gay…" he looked at his friend awkwardly, "... and it wasn't a secret; we just did not think to let it out."
"Anything you say, bro, I am tired. See you tomorrow," Edward said while walking towards the stairs.
Collins and Diana sat at the dining table for their breakfast; Edward had excused them, so it was just both of them at the table.
"I am sorry if I acted up. Yesterday, I was really sad." Diana was the one who broke the silence.
"Edward found out."
Diana gave a downcast look. "I am sorry, I can only remember a few things."
"Do you want to talk about it? I mean the other heartbreak," Collins asked.
"No, please, I prefer to talk about us. What happened to us? We were so loving. I want to know why you stopped talking to me, you stopped picking up my calls, and you even moved out of town. Did you stop loving me, or did you get tired of me?" It was obvious that this was a sad topic for her.
"I am sorry, Dia. I was ashamed of myself because I cheated…"
Diana stood up, then sat back; with a sarcastic smile, she said, "With whom? So I wasn't enough, or was I doing something wrong ?" Tiny drops of tears have started falling.
"No love, you were enough; you are all I ever wanted. I just don't know what came over me. I can't even explain how it happened. The worst was I saw it coming, and I did not try to avoid it; neither did I tell you about it when I noticed her advances."
"Who, Collins?"
"I am sorry."
"Who is it, Collins?"
"Fiona"
Diana laughed hysterically. "The Fiona I know?" He wasn't saying anything; neither could he look at her. "So you slept with my best friend; I guess it would have been better if I did not know about this."
She stood up. "I shouldn't sit at the same table with you; you are a scoundrel." She was wiping her tears.
"I am sorry, babe…" He stood up to meet her. "...It was just once, swears, and I wouldn't say I am not at fault or start playing blame games , but I promise you, babe, I was very sorry..." He held her left hand and brought it to his lips. "...I still am. I shouldn't have done this to you. Please, babe, let's start afresh. I missed you so much, and I couldn't get you off my mind even though guilt was eating me up so badly." He wiped the little tears on her face. "Babe, please don't cry."
"I have classes to attend this morning; I'll take my leave."
"Dia," he said soothingly.
She stopped in her tracks. "Why do you call me that? Why do you call me pet names and still cheat on me…" She turned to him. "I loved you so much, and it hurts too…"
He cut her off by giving her a passionate kiss; he wasn't expecting her to kiss him back, but she did.
Diana got caught up in the kiss and did not even know when she brought her hands to his neck.
She felt his hands grabbing her waist, bringing her closer. All she knew at that period was that she wanted this man as much as she needed her breath.
"Babe," she murmured.
"Hmm." Collins was not ready to cut off the kiss, but he did. "...I have missed this so much. I was a fool, I know, but not anymore. I will not let you go," he said while brushing her hair with his fingers before tucking it behind her ears.
"I am going nowhere, babe," she said, smiling, and then she kissed him again.
On getting to school, she saw her supposed best friend, Fiona; she walked to her smiling. "Hey," she said in a friendly tone.
"You look so happy today; what's up?"
"You will have to guess," Diana said.
"You are back with Michael?" she guessed questioningly.
"No way, you will have to guess harder…" Her supposed friend was looking at her confusingly. "... Not to stress you out, I am back with Collins."
Fiona gave a shocked expression but was still trying to cover it up with a smile, not until she heard, "And he told me you guys had sex, you know, steamy hot sex."
"It's not what you think; I can explain."
"You don't have to; I just don't want to see you anymore. I know you are sick in the head and that you are a jealous piece of trash, so I don't want to talk to you ever again."
"I was just jealous of your relationship with him, and I just wanted to be you instead. I wanted to take your place in his life, but it wasn't possible because he wouldn't even look at me; I had to trick him into meeting me, and I spiked his drink. I enjoyed the moment with him. I only regret that it did not work out between us."
"Well, bye. Let's not cross paths anymore, and yeah, this is a good riddance." With that, she walked away.
