Maddison had never felt so bad in her life. Ryan had been right, this was a pain that she would never have been able to describe before now. It had been nearly an hour since she had collapsed.
It was both a physical and a mental pain. She needed. She didn't know what she needed, just that she did. She was collapsed on a soft leather couch watching Chase and John play games, while the others were in the dining room, eating. Reece had offered to bring her out to the table and fix her something easy to eat but she wasn't hungry anymore. Not for food anyway.
She was alone, so verry verry alone. She whimpered again, and Chase rushed to her side.
"Its alright Maddison." He said kindly, brushing her hair aside.
"Don't worry Chase. She'll feel better soon." Reassured John. "I went through it too. Once she joins the pack she'll be better than normal."
"What if the pack doesn't want her. Ryan says they have to see if they want her at all, right?"
"Oh, the pack will want her. Some of the females might be upset at first, but having a woman as scary as your sister in the pack could only be a good thing."
At that Maddison managed a small growl, causing John to smile. That was the second time she had growled... Had she not felt so lost she would've marveled at the sensation.
"Its Kalie they don't like?" Chase asked sadly. "Why do people have to be such jerks. Its not like Kalie can help what she is anymore then she can help being a werewolf. Who she goes out with doesn't affect anyone..."
"Yeah... most wolves don't even care one way or the other about gay humans. Its gay wolves they have a problem with. I know it doesn't make sense. Objectively, I know it means nothing. But its an effort to get over it, you know. Kalie seems nice, and it would be good to have another submissive in the pack. There are only a couple of us."
Maddison began to tone the boys out. She didn't want to hear any of it. Everything was too much and she just wanted to not feel this way anymore.
Where is our mate?! We should not be alone!
We don't have a mate... so alone...
Call him! He is ours and should be with us. We don't want to be alone...
What are you talking about wolf? We have no one. Pack-less. Mate-less.
Where is he? Call to him.

Tired of this strange, arguing-with-herself-disagreement, Maddison simply decided to do what her wolf asked. She began crying out; there were no words, just animal-like sounds.
"Dad!" Chase called out, her strange noises scaring him.
People rushed into the room and within seconds her couch was surrounded with people. Still, she felt alone.
"What's going on?" asked Greg, fearfully.
"She just started making these noises." Cried Chase, hugging his father.
A scent touched Maddison's newly sensitive nose, and it eased something inside of her. Even that small alleviation of the pain was a relief. She breathed deeper and caught the scent again. She whimpered in longing.
Good. He is here...
She didn't under stand at first, but then a face swam into focused among the others. It was Reece. He wasn't directly around the couch, allowing her family to be as close as possible and giving them space.
But there he was, a look of pain and longing on his face that she imagined mirrored her own. She needed Reece. He was hers, and she was his.
Yes. Our mate. Called to one another. We felt him before we two were even ready to be as one. I know you felt it. I did not have voice then, but I felt it.
She remembered the day they met, just a short time ago. How entranced she had been by Reece, and how she kept finding herself thinking of him. Then she remembered when he touched her at the hospital. Called to him? Did that mean they were soul mates?
True mates. We could, conceivably, find another. But we have chosen him and he us.
So he and his wolf then?
Yes. We are a good match.
What does that mean though? How would this mate thing work?
One day, when you too feel as strongly as I, we would cement the bond by mating.
Hang on! You mean sex? No, no! I've never done that before and no way am I crawling into bed with a man I know nothing more about than his name and a vague idea as to where he grew up!
The cementing is of no issue. It is more his problem than ours. He will be the one continually needing to prove that we are his till the time you choose to accept our bond.
Maddison remembered the odd growling he had been doing when she was staring at the vampire. So he had known about this bond all along? She didn't blame him for not mentioning it. After all that is something she was having a hard time wrapping her head around now, let alone when she was still human.
Another ripple of pain zinged down her limbs and she cried out. Greg put a comforting hand on her right shoulder but it wasn't enough. She needed someone else.
Maddison whimpered again, then reached out toward Reece. She saw the look of surprise come over him, but he didn't even hesitate. In a flash he was there, sitting on the edge of the couch and rubbing a hand up and down she outside of her thigh.
She sighed as the pain lessened a little inside, and her breathing steadied. Maybe she could even sleep now... wanting him nearer to see if it would help, Maddison again reached for him, like a spoiled child demanding to be carried.
Reece smiled gently before getting up so he could lift her off the couch. Everyone backed away to give him room and Reece repositioned himself so that he was sitting on the couch comfortably with Maddison straddling his lap. She sighed and settled in against his chest, allowing her eyes to close.
Still wanting, she made a small impatient noise that made the werewolves in the room chuckle. Reece began to rub Maddison's back. Satisfied, she made no further noise and opted to try for a nap. Its hard to feel pain if you're asleep.
"What just happened?" asked Greg in a confused whisper.
"So you two are Called to each other?" Kalie asked, sounding both amazed and amused. "I could tell she had interest in you but-"
"Called? What does that mean?" asked Greg, sounding stressed.
