53 - Heartbreak

The entrance of Beaver Hollow was engulfed in flames.

The oil lamp fire was not easily extinguished, and several unfortunate souls were engulfed in flames, charging into the rain like human torches.

Stephen, who had rushed over, dispatched them with a single slash each, ending their suffering.

Rafael, clutching his rifle, charged forward, all hesitation gone.

Facing a struggling bandit, he raised his rifle, bringing the thick stock down hard on the man's head.

Seeing that the man wasn't dead, he grabbed an axe from the ground, raised it high, and brought it down heavily on the man's neck!

The man was instantly decapitated, blood splattering all over Rafael.

However, this was Rafael's first time, and he wasn't skilled enough; he only managed to sever it halfway.

The horrific scene made his stomach churn, and he nearly vomited.

He clenched his teeth and, with all his strength, brought the axe down on the man's neck again.

"Ah!! You bastards deserve to die! Die!"

Rafael's eyes were bloodshot as he hacked away with the axe. Stephen, seeing that something was wrong, quickly grabbed his hand.

"Save your strength, he's already dead," Stephen said, tapping his wrist gently with the back of his knife, causing the axe to fall to the ground.

"At least find your family first!"

"I understand, I'll be calm," Rafael gasped, his hands still shaking.

Anyone who has cut people knows that the first time is hard to control the strength and angle.

It's easy to end up not killing the person, but running out of strength yourself.

Stephen knew what he was going through, picked up the rifle from the ground and shoved it into his hands. "Follow me."

Then, without another word, he grabbed his Pump-Action Shotgun in his left hand and his long knife in his right, and slowly walked into the Cave.

Rafael gripped his rifle tightly, following closely behind Stephen.

Arthur had also reached the entrance of the Cave, but he didn't go inside. Instead, he grabbed some debris and built a simple barricade at the entrance.

There might still be remnants of the Murfree Brood outside. He had to stay and guard it.

If those guys heard the commotion and came back to trap all three of them inside, that would be trouble.

  The Cave reeked, badly.

The two hadn't gone far when a terrifying stench filled the Cave.

Stephen couldn't stand the stench and quickly covered his nose and mouth with his bandana.

How could these guys tolerate such a terrible environment?

It was dark inside. He handed the Pump-Action Shotgun to Rafael behind him, then grabbed a torch from the wall, using the light to illuminate the path ahead.

Ahead was a narrow passage with a few forks in the road visible in the distance.

It seemed the Cave was a maze, and there was no knowing if there were any others hiding deep inside.

Stephen walked slowly, suddenly sensing a faint breath coming from behind the stone wall ahead.

He held out his hand, signaling Rafael to wait.

Then, without taking his gun, he nonchalantly walked towards it, his knife in hand.

As Stephen expected, just as his body reached the stone wall, a black shadow roared out from Stephen's right side.

Stephen didn't even bother to look. This kind of trick was far too amateur.

He raised his right hand slightly, and the long knife went from bottom to top, cutting through the man's stomach all the way up!

By the time Stephen walked past him, the man had already collapsed in a pool of blood.

But the man's scream seemed to be a horn, and the remaining guys in the Cave, wielding axes and knives, charged at Stephen.

Stephen quickly met them, a quick slash taking down one man.

Then, his body rotated to the left, following the momentum of the blade. By the time Stephen had completed a circle and straightened, his knife was raised high above his head.

Then, the long knife came down with tremendous force, and an unlucky man who had charged too fast was cleaved from head to toe by Stephen.

The slash split the man from his face to his chest, and he was unlikely to live.

Seeing Stephen's brutality, the remaining guys dropped their weapons and tried to run.

But Rafael, who had been watching from the back, couldn't let them escape.

He charged forward, past Stephen, and raised Stephen's Pump-Action Shotgun, firing continuously.

By the time the six bullets in the gun were gone, there was no one left.

"Nice one," Stephen praised him, taking bullets from his bag for Rafael to reload.

Rafael frantically reloaded the bullets, remembering to thank Stephen.

Stephen smiled. Then, the two of them stepped over the corpses and continued forward.

Past the narrow passage, there was a spacious cavern.

At the back of the cavern was a large table, along with several bonfires, all with pots hanging over them, seemingly stewing something.

A strange meaty aroma wafted from the pots. Rafael wanted to rush forward to see what was inside, but Stephen quickly stopped him.

Faced with Rafael's confused expression, Stephen said slowly, "No matter what you see, stay calm, understand?"

Rafael swallowed hard, saying with some difficulty, "I understand. I... I'm ready."

Once Stephen was sure Rafael would be alright, he released him.

The two of them walked together to the table. The table was covered in blood, with severed limbs casually placed on it.

The walls and floor were also covered in blood, and the thick smell of blood mixed with the meat aroma and the stench in the air made one's stomach churn.

Stephen didn't even need to look to know what the hell was in the pot. None of these guys were innocent; they all deserved to die!

The two of them continued forward. Rafael was very nervous, wanting to find his family, but also afraid of what he would find.

The two slowly came to the depths of the Cave, where there were several cages.

Stephen took a closer look, and even he, with all his experience, couldn't help but feel a chill in his heart.

This was truly a hell on earth!

Everywhere was covered in blood and shredded meat. Various human tissues, broken into pieces, were scattered around like garbage.

Two naked bodies, already gutted, hung on the wooden stakes nearby.

Stephen knew at a glance: a woman, a child.

Rafael stared blankly at the two bodies, his body sinking weakly to the ground in front of them.

Stephen turned away, unable to bear such a scene.

Rafael's eyes completely lost their light. As they say, nothing is more tragic than a dead heart.

Stephen knew that at this moment, this man's heart was dead.
