Beginning of Elle: Echo Star

Introduction:Elle, a young girl with autism, finds solace on her swing in the backyard, where she can escape the overwhelming sounds of the world. Despite the challenges she faces, including wearing diapers and being misunderstood by her peers, her brother Lucas encourages her to embrace her unique abilities, referring to them as superpowers.

Lucas's support is instrumental in helping Elle feel accepted, as he reassures her that everyone has their own challenges and encourages her to see her abilities as gifts. Elle's experience in a new class for gifted children introduces her to Mia, who shares similar experiences regarding wearing pull-ups and diapers, fostering a sense of acceptance. Elle's artistic talent is showcased when she paints stars and impresses Dr. Patel with her accuracy of the stars, an astronomer, who invites her to the observatory to explore her discoveries further and finds a galaxy. Months later, Elle presents her findings at a science seminar, receiving applause and a telescope from Dr. Patel as a gift, affirming her extraordinary abilities.

Elle looked at the stars that night through her new telescope, Mia on the swing nearby, Lucas wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.

  Different wasn’t wrong.

  Different was brilliant.

  Different was Elle.

  Chapter 1: The Swing

Elle sat on the swing in her backyard, her fingers tracing the soft fabric of her favourite blue dress. The world felt too loud. The rustling leaves, chirping birds, even the wind brushing her cheeks sometimes made her skin prickle. But the swing was different. Its gentle motion calmed the storm inside her mind.

Elle knew she was different. Being autistic meant she could see patterns in clouds and remember stories word-for-word. But it also made things like loud noises, scratchy clothes, or unclear conversations feel impossible to handle. Because of how her brain worked, she still wore diapers—something other kids didn’t understand.

At school, Elle didn’t talk much. She liked to listen instead. She could tell when someone was happy or sad just by their voice. But some kids whispered about her. And not the kind of whispering.

"Why does she wear those?" a girl had once said, loudly enough for Elle to hear.

Elle had looked away, pretending she didn't notice. She didn’t know how to explain that her body and brain didn’t always agree. It wasn’t something she chose.

But at home, under the stars, none of that mattered. On her swing, she could just be Elle.

  Chapter 2: Lucas

One evening, her big brother Lucas found her sitting under the tree, hugging her knees.

"What’s up, El?" he asked, sitting beside her.

She hesitated. Lucas never rushed her.

"I don’t like school," she whispered.

Lucas sighed. "Yeah, kids can be mean. But you know what? You have a superpower."

  Elle frowned. "I do?"

"You see things other people miss. You feel things deeply. You remember nearly everything. That’s a gift."

Elle shifted. "What about... the diapers?"

Lucas shrugged. "So what? Some kids wear glasses. Others use wheelchairs. Everyone has something."

She tensed, but Lucas simply patted her shoulder.

"No big deal," he said gently. "It’s just part of you."

She blinked away tears. If Lucas didn’t see her differently, maybe she didn’t have too either.

  Chapter 3: The New Class

The next day, Lucas had news.

"Mom signed you up for a new class. For gifted kids. You don’t have to go, but I think you’ll like it."

Elle was nervous. But Lucas would be nearby during his gym class. That made it easier to say yes.

Her new teacher, Mrs. Lefebvre, greeted her warmly. The kids were painting, and no one stared or whispered. Elle picked up a brush and let the colours swirl across the paper, just like the stars in her mind.

A girl with curly brown hair sat beside her. "That’s amazing," she said.

  Elle blushed.

"I’m Mia," the girl said. "I heard a familiar sound from you that I am used to at home and here”

Elle nodded slowly. "My brain doesn’t always tell my body in time."

"That makes sense. I wear pull-ups at night," Mia said. "No one here cares about diapers and pull-ups here.my little brother over there wears diapers as well"

  Elle smiled. A real smile.

  Chapter 4: Painting Stars

Elle and Mia painted together often. Elle showed her how she placed stars on the page to match constellations she looks at night. Mia watched in awe.

One day, Elle met Dr. Patel, a visiting astronomer, guest speaker. He was amazed by her paintings.

"How do you know where to put the stars?" he asked.

"I see them in my mind," Elle said. "Sometimes I hear them too."Elle continued, speaking softly...,” I see the Andromeda galaxy and am sure there’s a galaxy behind that hiding another galaxy”

Dr. Patel took pictures of her work. A few days later, a letter arrived at Elle’s house.

"Elle, we invite you to visit our observatory. Your drawings of the stars are incredible."

Elle danced around the kitchen. She couldn’t wait to visit there

Chapter 5: The Observatory“Few months later”

At the observatory, scientists welcomed her. They adjusted the telescope for her size.Elle adjusting settings being the “angle of the telescope”,

  "Try this setting," Elle suggested.

Everyone watched the screen as she pointed. "There. That’s a galaxy I see at night."

As she explained, she felt the uncomfortable warmth in her diaper. Panic rose.

Her mom noticed her fidgeting and quietly took her to clean up. Elle sobbed walking to the bathroom.

"What if they don’t take me seriously now?" she asked.

"They saw your mind, not your diaper," her mom said. "You are extraordinary."

Back in the room 10 minutes later, the scientists clapped her quietly for her sensitivity to noise.

"Elle, we think you found a new galaxy," Dr. Patel said. "NASA has just been notified."

  Elle was speechless.

  Chapter 6: The Seminar

Months later, Elle stood in front of a crowd at a kid’s science seminar. Lucas held her hand on stage. Mia pointed to the stars helping Elle on the screen as Elle talked about her galaxy.

When it ended, the applause shook the room. Dr. Patel stepped up.

"For her discoveries, courage and knowledge we present Elle with a telescope of her own."

  Elle burst into tears.

Later, a scientist from NASA whispered to her, "Ever thought of working with NASA program someday?"She then handed a card with her name and number on it.
