Viena, An, and Gwen are searching around the training ground. They are helped by an academy cadet by the request of Professor Gaspard, who he himself currently sits under a peach tree near the western part of the training ground. They are looking for the birthday present, spending minutes debating of the exact coordinate that Randia's hinted through his message.
"Five steps to the left, and . . . here. This should be the pce."
"Hey, junior! Dig the stuff out, will you?"
"Yes, ma'am!"
The young cadet starts digging with his shovel and Viena is helping with her little hands. Meanwhile, An nudged Gwen, criticizing her love of flexing authority, in which she ignored pompously.
It only takes a minute for the young d's shovel to hit a hard object down in the ground. He yelled for everyone's attention, and they all gathered. On the outer side, it doesn't seem to be anything special. It's just a small trunk made of an old oak in the size of a spice box. They took it out and inspect it.
"Senior! There is a letter attached on the backside!"
"What does it say?"
"For all of you who helped my little girl in her search for her present, allow me to express my gratitude for your trouble, not only by words but also by some small surprises that I have prepared inside. As for the expnation of the location, it was only possible since Knightess Hirma of the 2nd Airborne Patrol Regiment owed me a tiny favor. I hope she can learn a lot during her little trip," said the cadet.
"Hirma? The Natnis?"
"Ah, I see. Now everything makes sense. Even when some people did see her doing something out here, no one would dare to ask," the professor replied.
"Alright kiddo, your job is done. Here, you've earned yourself a drink. Now get lost!" Gwen tossed a silver coin worth three big mugs of ale to the cadet.
"Eh? Can't I stay for a while longer? I'm curious too!"
"Huuh? Are you talking back to me? Come on! Say it again to my face!" Gwen tapped her finger on the cadet's forehead repeatedly. The cadet, being scared, is running away immediately.
Together, they open the trunk. Inside, they find four peculiar objects. There is a thick gss container filled with dozens of white-colored pills, a cy ointment jar, a gss fsk with blueish liquid inside that has a warning sign, and two smaller wooden boxes with a daisy flower picture on its surface.
"Hey look! There is another letter!" Viena excitedly took the paper out and read it.
"Fresh candy . . . and Pretty Cream? Oh, also - uh, Elixir of Retrum?"
Professor Gaspard suddenly make a fuss when he heard it. He immediately popped his head between An and Gwen and pushes them aside. He then grabbed the gss fsk with blueish liquid inside and carefully took it out and raise it high to the sky.
"Elixir of Retrovelum!"
An and Gwen know that despite the professor's usual haphazard demeanor, he rarely shows such level of excitement. Thus, An couldn't help but questioning the reason of his reaction.
"I'm not sure if I ever heard of that. What does it do, Professor?"
"Retrovelum roughly means 'veiled past'. This elixir is made so that people who drink this could dream of their most desired memory of someone, somewhere, or something."
The professor tapped Viena's shoulder and crouched.
"Little dy. Tell me, who is your father?"
"Papa's name is Ran! He works as a medevist!"
"This elixir is a rare potion. Not because the ingredients are hard to find, or the methods are unknown, but rather because to make one, the alchemist must keep a very close eye on the concoction and brewing process for 25 hours straight nonstop! Hence its rarity."
Professor Gaspard took out his pouch and gives Viena 3 coins of gold that worth 200 Rios each. He also gives one gold coin each for An and Gwen.
"Fortunately, you guys found the treasure. Yet, unfortunately, the treasure was found under my jurisdiction! I'll have this one for myself, but I won't be so cruel, so there goes your payment. And also, you are free to roam around wherever you want. Now, take care kids!"
The three of them saw the professor leaving. They don't say anything and let him do as he wishes since his face is so incredibly bright and happy, and they don't feel like ruining it with 'but's and 'why's.
"Well, that was unexpected," Gwen raised her eyebrows.
"Hm. So, there are three left."
Viena took the gss container filled with white-colored candy and open it. She puts one in her mouth. It tastes bittersweet, in which she doesn't mind at all, but obviously, she isn't going to put a lot of it in her mouth.
"Mint."
"Mint? So, it's like . . . spicy? I don't really like spicy things," Gwen replied.
"It's not like hot spicy, but there are spices and herbs. Hmm . . . Star anise, fennel . . . Oh! There is also licorice! But yeah, it's mostly mint."
An took one for himself and he doesn't have any compin about the taste. Rather, it looks like he enjoys the cold sensation of the mint. He loves it even more when he tried to check his own breath. It's completely fragrant with not a single foul odor. Seeing this, Gwen became worried that she was really missing out on something.
"Hey, it's not that bad!" Gwen smiled.
"Right?!"
Now there is only one prize left in the trunk, which is the two wooden boxes. When Viena tried to open them, she can only open one box while the other remain tightly shut as if it's sealed.
"I-It's not opening! Help me An!"
An takes the box off her hands and try to pry it open. However, despite all of his strength, the box won't budge. He tried to open it again and again for the sake of his pride, but still, he couldn't.
"W-What's wrong . . . with this damned . . . thing!"
"What about you Gwen? Can you open it?"
"Nah, impossible. If An can't even do it, let alone me."
While An is still busy with the other box, Viena inspects the other box. Inside she found pieces of wood that is peculiarly carved. There is certain kind of pattern in each of it that differs between one and another. It takes Viena a minute to realize what it means.
"Wait, An! Give it to me!"
An gives it to Viena, and she takes a careful look at the previous daisy flower picture. She also noticed that the carving under the daisy picture is not a mere ornament. It is a board that is carved to make it on a different level of depth with the surface wood. Viena took one of the wooded pieces from the other box that has ft edges, and it fits perfectly with satisfying sound on the corner of the board.
"Aha! I was right!" Viena excited.
When Viena took another one and lining up the pieces one by one, Gwen noticed what is up when she realized that the scattered wooden pieces make a certain jumbled shape.
"Oh! I understand! It's a game! These pieces should be connected!"
"Yes, Gwen! You are right!"
"But what should we make? How do we know which one is in the right pce or not?"
"Gasp! The daisy!" An makes a sound remark.
"Yeah!"
Once the objective is clear and the goal is set, they immediately work together to complete the daisy with the wooden pieces they had. An estimated that there are five tiles to the board's length, and eight tiles to its width, therefore, there should be 40 wooden pieces that they have to assemble. They are so determined to complete the challenge. Few debates sparked as they explored the game but finally managed to make it halfway after almost an hour.
One time, a patrolling officer saw them gather and being noisy and wanted to see what they are doing.
"Hey, you three. What are you all do-?"
"SHUT THE FUCK UP BUCKETHEAD!"
"WE ARE BUSY HERE! GET ALONG, WILL YOU?!"
Gwen and An startled the patrolling officer. It's as if he is seeing three kids so busy pying that they completely lose track of their surroundings.
"I-I was just doing my job . . . ," said the officer as he walks away heartbroken.
Another hour has psed, and the academy bell rings seventeen times. The sun rays have grown weak, and the cold autumn air begins to swirl. The young cadets are having their afternoon track run, and they passed Viena, An, and Gwen, who was busy tinkering with the wooden box several times already. Until suddenly Viena jumps up with her chest puffing.
"Haha! Finally! We have the only st piece remaining!"
An and Gwen give a loud round of appuse, mainly to praise their own efforts in solving the never-seen-before challenge. People are looking at their direction looking both curious and judging, but they couldn't care less.
"Hurry up, put it in Viena! I can't wait anymore!" Gwen is giddy.
"Alriiight! Here we go!"
When Viena put the st piece in its pce. The whole box shines in dim light for three seconds before dying out.
"Go on, Viena, I'm sure that is your father's true gift."
Viena opens the box, and she is so surprised.
.
.
.
It's a pair of dangle earrings. It's so beautiful that it still shines brightly eve when it is only touched by the soft ray of dusk. The hook and the backs are made from the highest-grade titanium. Though such details are unknown by Viena herself, but Gwen knows how precious the jewelry is.
However, there is one point that is impossible to go unnoticed by all who feast their eyes upon the earrings, and that is the pink diamond that reign crowned as the center of attention. The diamonds are rge and profound, and they sparkle brilliantly, as if they were alive and screaming for everyone to look at them. Those diamonds are the very same diamonds that were perched on Randia's rings, though of course, only Viena knows about this.
