74-Feeding

What did a growing wolf pup need to eat in order to grow?

For something that was just born, Rowan assumed that the pup would need what most babies would need, milk.

The problem was where do you get milk?

Obviously the first thing that came to Rowan's mind was a cow. However it would be quite difficult to find a cow in the Forest of Death, unless they were a special cow like Bessie.

It was hard to compare since all the animals on the farm were special.

Rowan hadn't seen a cow since he started exploring the forest and it wasn't difficult to see why. A normal cow would have a hard time surviving, especially with all the wolves and monsters running around.

The next possible answer was to find another source of milk, such as another monster that gave birth. A task that's almost equally as difficult as finding a cow.

Rowan was on no friendly terms with any monster in the forest and he found it difficult for a nursing monster to give him their milk. He’d have better luck finding a monster that was either pregnant or just gave birth and killing it. He could drain the milk from the corpse. The only issue with that solution was that it would be that the milk would not be unlimited.

Rowan needed a constant supply of milk for the pup, at least in the early stages. If he killed a monster everytime he found that it produced milk, that would make him waste needless energy.

Not to mention all the monsters he would be orphaning as a result.

Now that would be truly heartless of him. To feed one child, another child and their parent would need to pay a price. Even Rowan who hated monsters wasn't so coldhearted to perform such an action.

There's also the big if factor. Rowan had yet to even see a baby monster besides the wolf pup. He had no idea how the other monsters raised their young, but they hid their children very well. There was no guarantee that he could even find a milk producing monster.

So what were his other options?

As of now, Rowan couldn't think of any other way to help feed the wolf pup.

Maybe he shouldn't have picked up the pup after all. If it was going to die under his care then he should have ended its life earlier. Instead it would now be faced with a slow death, due to lack of proper food.

As Rowan mused over this new problem, he carried the pup over to the Mother Tree. It only made sense to introduce the new member to the remaining members of the camp.

While most people would not consider a tree a member of their team, the Mother Tree was special. He had helped it grow all the way from a tiny seed. The original Mother Tree had sacrificed part of herself to keep him alive and he felt responsible for the new tree. The current one also helped him in many ways.

Most trees couldn’t respond back to you. The Mother Tree could and that was enough for Rowan to consider the tree alive.

Not because he promised to take care of the Mother Tree, but because he had already considered it to be part of his own family.

Besides, intelligent plant were not so uncommon in the Forest of Death. Most plants were intelligent, but only used their wits to figure out ways to trap prey.

The pup started whimpering in Rowan's arms. What it wanted exactly, he did not know. Maybe it was hungry?

“Quiet.” Rowan hushed the wolf pup and the small animal immediately went silent. Perhaps it was obedient to Rowan because it was still adjusting to him. Or maybe it was intimidated by the new stranger. Now it was a question of how long the pup would stay obedient.

“Mother Tree, I picked up someone new today. It’s family was wiped out by a monster and it had nowhere to go.” Rowan gave a brief introduction about the pup.

Most likely the explanation was unnecessary, but Rowan still explained why he bought the pup over. Afterall, the Mother Tree was the one who taught Rowan the mana pulse technique. The Mother Tree could see everything happening in the Forest and unlike Rowan’s technique, she could watch without stopping. Only Rowan did not know if Mother tree was paying attention when the situation occurred. Events were constantly happening in the forest and MotherTree had a large range to pay attention to. Rowan could barely focus on one spot, yet alone the whole forest. It almost drove him mad when he first tried to comprehend the forest through mana. He could only imagine what it took to be able to process all that information without going crazy.

Putting down the pup gently by the tree trunk, Rowan waited for a response.

The snow white pup started whimpering as laid on the ground.

Yep, most like the pup was hungry. If it needed to relieve itself, it would have done so already.

“Alright, alright, quiet. I’ll-” Before Rowan could finish his rebuke, a cold wave of mana hit him.

  Disapproval.

Confused Rowan could only stare at the Mother Tree. What did she not like? Was it his words?

The pup continued to whine and this time Rowan didn't stop it. He watched curiously as the pup whimpering became louder and louder.

Then a small golden glow emitted from the Mother Tree and covered the pup. Warm and soothing, Rowan realized what the glow was.

  Life Mana.

The same way the Mother Tree had kept Rowan alive and helped him grow all these years, she would do the same for the pup. The only difference is that the Mother Tree initiated it herself as the pup was too helpless to do anything.

The whining of the pup soon stopped and it began to snuggle near the trunk of the Mother Tree.

After a few minutes, the glow soon dimmed and then completely faded. The pup, satisfied, curled up and slumbered away into blissful dreamland.

Huh, I guess I don't need to find food for the pup after all. As expected of something named the Mother Tree. Caring and nurturing in its nature. After all it's not the first time the tree raised somebody.
